Book excerpt: Symbolic Play: The Development of Social Understanding describes the development of symbolic play from infancy through the preschool years. This text is divided into 12 chapters that focus on make-believe as an activity within which young children spontaneously represent and practice their understanding of the social world. The first chapter introduces the development of event schemata produced in symbolic play, about children's management of the playframe, and about the development of subjunctive, or "what if" thought. The next chapters are devoted to the development of joint pretending, specifically the use if shared scripts in the organization of make-believe play and the subtleties of metacommunication. These chapters also emphasize the supporting role of the mother in early collaborative make-believe. These topics are followed by discussions of the child's growing ability to represent the internal states of the inanimate figures whose doing can vicariously enacts. The remaining chapters focus on social interaction through symbolic play with dolls, toy animals, object props, and language. This book will prove useful to psychologists and researchers in the fields of human development, society, and family.

  • Pages : 68 pages

Download or read book Azaria written by Anne Musoke and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-05-19 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Azaria is one that was written after much thought and consideration. Her story is not so singular in that there are many young women around the world that experience the same things Azaria endured. The uniqueness comes in the time, place, and context that these events may have occurred and continue to occur. The story of Azaria is one that opens the eyes to the strength and endurance of true love and the depth of forgiveness that love can reach to and at the same time. It depicts the strength, endurance, and resilience of the human spirit. This is a story that I knew had to be told. Many have lived it, but the time had come for someone to put pen to paper and release it. This is to release the pain and feelings of hurt, betrayal, and disappointment and to also bring to light the joy that comes from withstanding any storm that may approach in life. Azarias story is told in a series of books, with Azaria being the first of that series that will follow the journey that Azaria and her family travels. In this book, there is an opportunity for the reader to identify with each character. This is a story about the strengths and flaws of human character. There is no villain; it is just a story of young love gone wrong, which could happen to anyone. Any man or woman could make the same human errors that have been made by the characters in this story. It is not for anyone to judge but to simply read and introspect. Any of these characters could be you, or even me. Being human is a challenge. The obstacles life presents us with tests us on a daily basis, and our character strengths and weaknesses are often tested. We may be hurt or hurt others. We may be disappointed or let down or be the one who disappoints and lets someone else down. At the end of it all, we are still human. We still breathe the same air, cry the same tears, and bleed the same blood. Ours is to live and love in the best way we can and the best way we know how, and this is the story of Azaria. Book A Marine s Odyssey

Download or read book A Marine s Odyssey written by Larry Ritchie Williams and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colonel Larry Williams spent twenty-seven years in the United States Marine Corps commanding ten units and organizations while serving from Japan and Vietnam to Moscow and Beirut. Here is his account. It started by a chance discovery and years later was dramatically reoriented by a coin toss. As the high school class of 1953 anticipated graduation they chatted in the hallways exchanging ideas about future plans. His afternoon and Saturday jobs during high school did not provide enough money for college. One day while changing classes he observed a booklet on his homeroom teacher's desk that described the NROTC as how one might earn a commission in the United States Navy and even compete for a college scholarship. It contained an application! Upon graduation from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill four years later he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps preparing to serve the obligated four years payback for his free education. It seemed like a good plan, but life often has little respect for planning. Within three years he was on Okinawa separated from his wife and their two newborns for a thirteen month deployment. On his return he joined the faculty at the Army Artillery and Missile School. Then it was another thirteen months away this time in Vietnam. Reassigned to Frankfurt, Germany he commanded Marine Security Guards in twenty-seven diplomatic posts in Europe including six "behind the Iron Curtain.” Upon graduation from the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk he and a classmate were informed by Headquarters, Marine Corps that they both were to be reassigned to WestPac (western pacific) for a year with one going to Okinawa and the other to Vietnam. Headquarters asked for their preferences. Both wanted to return to Vietnam. He lost the coin toss and it was back to Okinawa. That coin toss was to significantly restructure his career – and his life. The subsequent years included managing the security at the Naval Air Station, Alameda, California made turbulent by the prevailing civil rights and antiwar environment, contributing to the Marine Corps becoming the only military service to support every dollar spent with explicit cost-benefit analysis, in spite of opposition by the Army and the DoD fielding a totally new light armor combat capability into the Marine Corps with an innovative acquisition program completing within budget and only 2.25 years from concept to production, conducting Arctic exercises in North Norway including a night amphibious landing unseen by Russians just a mountain range away in Murmansk, commanding the largest artillery organization in the world and trying unsuccessfully to contribute to a peaceful resolution to conflict in Lebanon in 1983.

Book Say Hello to My Little Friend

Download or read book Say Hello to My Little Friend written by Jennine Capó Crucet and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-03-05 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Say Hello to My Little Friend is a masterclass in pace and precision. Crucet can make you cry before you’ve even realized you’ve become invested and make you laugh even through the hurt. Brilliant.” —Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah, National Book Award Finalist of Chain Gang All Stars Scarface meets Moby Dick in this groundbreaking, darkly comic novel about a young man’s attempt to capitalize on his mother’s murky legacy—a story steeped in Miami’s marvelous and sinister magic. Failed Pitbull impersonator Ismael Reyes—you can call him Izzy—might not be the Scarface type, but why should that keep him from trying? Growing up in Miami has shaped him into someone who dreams of being the King of the 305, with the money, power, and respect he assumes comes with it. After finding himself at the mercy of a cease-and-desist letter from Pitbull’s legal team and living in his aunt’s garage-turned-efficiency, Izzy embarks on an absurd quest to turn himself into a modern-day Tony Montana. When Izzy’s efforts lead him to the tank that houses Lolita, a captive orca at the Miami Seaquarium, she proves just how powerful she and the water surrounding her really are—permeating everything from Miami’s sinking streets to Izzy’s memories to the very heart of the novel itself. What begins as Izzy’s story turns into a super-saturated fever dream as sprawling and surreal as the Magic City, one as sharp as an iguana’s claws, and as menacing as a killer whale’s teeth. As the truth surrounding Izzy’s boyhood escape from Cuba surfaces, the novel reckons with the forces of nature, with the limits and absence of love, and with the dangers of pursuing a tragic inheritance. Wildly narrated and expertly rendered, Say Hello to My Little Friend is Jennine Capó Crucet’s most daring, heart-breaking, and fearless book yet.
