Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beah cannot help but wonder what lies beyond her earthly existence. For quite some time, she has been frightened by the unexplainable opening and closing of doors, the sounds of footsteps and muffled voices, and the echoes of a child’s soft crying while home alone in the Massachusetts Victorian home she shares with her husband. Because no one else ever sees or hears anything unusual, Beah invents logical explanations, for such things just do not happen—or so she thinks. One day while working on the old house, Beah unwittingly loosens a baseboard and unearths an antique pocket watch. Unaware of its mystical powers, Beah eventually falls asleep on the floor, only to awaken as a child in the Victorian era who is happily interacting with the house’s original occupants. But when she voyages into the past a second time, Beah is metamorphosed into a teenager who must sail dangerous oceans disguised as a cabin boy. While she faces death under the sea, a murderer pursues her through time. As Beah precariously dangles between the past and present, she must uncover the truth, before it is too late. Voyages from Main Street is the tale of a woman’s perilous journey through time as she desperately searches for answers and attempts to outrun a determined killer.

Book Southampton Cottages of South Main Street The

Download or read book Southampton Cottages of South Main Street The written by Sally Spanburgh and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 1887, Southampton was proclaimed 'the most charming of all small cities by the sea.' From 1870 to 1930, the colonial farmsteads that dotted its oldest street made way for the stately second homes of America's most fashionable elite. Hollywood royalty like Ginger Rogers and Jimmy Stewart lived and played in these magnificent second homes. Situated on the east side of Lake Agawam, South Main Street cottagers fished, bicycled, sailed and walked to the beach and into the village throughout the summer season. Today all but five of these grand landmarks survive. Local author Sally Spanburgh uses her historical and architectural expertise to tell the stories behind the construction of these beautiful homes and their remarkable owners"--Publisher description.

Book excerpt: In an engaging and anecdotal social history, Siân Evans's Maiden Voyages explores how women’s lives were transformed by the Golden Age of ocean liner travel between Europe and North America. During the early twentieth century, transatlantic travel was the province of the great ocean liners. It was an extraordinary undertaking made by many women, whose lives were changed forever by their journeys between the Old World and the New. Some traveled for leisure, some for work; others to reinvent themselves or find new opportunities. They were celebrities, migrants and millionaires, refugees, aristocrats and crew members whose stories have mostly remained untold—until now. Maiden Voyages is a fascinating portrait of the era, the ships themselves, and these women as they crossed the Atlantic. The ocean liner was a microcosm of contemporary society, divided by class: from the luxury of the upper deck, playground for the rich and famous, to the cramped conditions of steerage or third class travel. In first class you’ll meet A-listers like Marlene Dietrich, Wallis Simpson, and Josephine Baker; the second class carried a new generation of professional and independent women, like pioneering interior designer Sibyl Colefax. Down in steerage, you’ll follow the journey of émigré Maria Riffelmacher as she escapes poverty in Europe. Bustling between decks is a crew of female workers, including Violet “The Unsinkable Stewardess” Jessop, who survived the Titanic disaster. Entertaining and informative, Maiden Voyages captures the golden age of ocean liners through the stories of the women whose transatlantic journeys changed the shape of society on both sides of the globe.

Book Remaking the Voyage

Download or read book Remaking the Voyage written by Helen Tookey and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Open Access edition of this book is available on the Liverpool University Press website and the OAPEN library. ‘Who ever thought they would one day be able to read Malcolm Lowry’s fabled novel of the 1930s and 40s, In Ballast to the White Sea? Lord knows, I didn’t’ – Michael Hofmann, TLS This book breaks new ground in studies of the British novelist Malcolm Lowry (1909–57), as the first collection of new essays produced in response to the publication in 2014 of a scholarly edition of Lowry’s ‘lost’ novel, In Ballast to the White Sea. In their introduction, editors Helen Tookey and Bryan Biggs show how the publication of In Ballast sheds new light on Lowry as both a highly political writer and one deeply influenced by his native Merseyside, as his protagonist Sigbjørn Hansen-Tarnmoor walks the streets of Liverpool, wrestling with his own conscience and with pressing questions of class, identity and social reform. In the chapters that follow, renowned Lowry scholars and newer voices explore key aspects of the novel and its relation to the wider contexts of Lowry’s work. These include his complex relation to socialism and communism, the symbolic value of Norway, and the significance of tropes of loss, hauntings and doublings. The book draws on the unexpected opportunity offered by the rediscovery of In Ballast to look afresh at Lowry’s oeuvre, to ‘remake the voyage’.
