Book Voyages de photographes

Download or read book Voyages de photographes written by Danièle Méaux and published by PU Saint-Etienne. This book was released on 2009 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Photographic Travel Books written by Danièle Méaux and published by Université de Saint-Etienne. This book was released on 2017-07-24 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since early in its history, photography has been used by a diversity of travellers, whose collected photographs have been compiled into albums. But Photographic Travel as a genre of art did not appear before the second half of the twentieth century, and had a singular fate and fortune in the US as well as in Europe. The initial objective of some itinerant photographers is to make a book; their shooting practice is conditioned by this objective, as well as their travel experience. Their books – designed as one coherent hole – refer to their wandering experience, even though their stories are never completely free from fiction. In these books, their travels are converged, and their subjectivity is revealed. It is therefore relevant to call such books made of photographies, and possibly words about the travel experience, Photographic Travel books (comparably to Travel books). Danièle Méaux has tackled the task of characterizing this genre.

Book Contemporary Photography in France

Download or read book Contemporary Photography in France written by Olga Smith and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2022-10-19 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compelling publication traces the broad arc of photography’s development in France from the 1970s to the present day. A decade-by-decade account reveals unexpected points of convergence between practices that are not usually considered in a comparative perspective. These include photographic practices in contemporary art, documentary, photojournalism, and fashion. Author Olga Smith sets these practices in dialogue with French philosophy – the writings of Roland Barthes, Jean Baudrillard, and Jacques Rancière – to produce an innovative study of the intersections between the photographic image, text, practice, and theory. This analysis is guided by an understanding of photography as deeply engaged with historical, cultural, and intellectual events that defined French national experience in the contemporary period. Landscape provides a particular focus to study issues of key significance, including national identification, colonial past, legacies of modernization and environmental breakdown.

Book Photography Memory and Refugee Identity

Download or read book Photography Memory and Refugee Identity written by Lynda Mannik and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2013-04-20 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1948, a small ship carrying Estonian refugees arrived at Pier 21 in Halifax. In this absorbing work, anthropologist Lynda Mannik analyzes the refugee experience through the photographic record of those who made that harrowing voyage. Drawing on a collection of photographs taken during the voyage and at Pier 21, Mannik asks surviving passengers to describe their journey, their reception in Canada, and to what extent the photos reflect their experiences as they remember them. The photographs in the SS Walnut collection, she argues, bear witness to the refugee experience even as the meanings attached to them have changed over time and in shifting contexts.
