Book excerpt: Throughout his life, Le Corbusier always carried sketchbooks in which he accumulated observations, calculations, notes, architectural drawings, and sketches of works and projects. As a whole, these constitute a source of extraordinary interest. The architect's reflections come to life, creation appears in its nascent state. In and of themselves, the sketchbooks represent a sort of fundamental "latent work," for which the finished work, whatever its mode of expression, is only a secondary outcome. Hoping to make these works accessible to everyone, in 1981 the Le Corbusier Foundation in Paris authorized the publication of 73 sketchbooks from the years 1914 to 1964, comprising a major portion of the Le Corbusier legacy. Later, the foundation was able to acquire six of the earliest sketchbooks, which correspond to the period of the voyage to the east in 1910-1911, and which were not part of the original bequest. In their current state, Charles-Edouard Jeanneret's notations for Voyage d'Orient begin in sketchbook numbered "V" in Le Corbusier's hand; the first pages, however, correspond to his 1910 trip to Germany. The four preceding sketchbooks, which have not been found, undoubtedly refer to the beginning of that voyage. Nevertheless, these six sketchbooks, which have been only recently discovered, cover the entire period of Voyage d'Orient, a time now known to have been exceptionally significant in the formation of the architect who would become Le Corbusier. Consequently, these sketchbooks constitute a homogeneous totality of fundamental importance that justifies their publication. This led to an agreement with the Italian publishing house, Electa, to produce a facsimile edition. Professor Giuliano Gresleri, a respected scholar of Le Corbusier's early years and author of the work Viaggio in Oriente, oversaw the general presentation of these sketchbooks and the editing of the explanatory notes. For its part, the Le Corbusier Foundation saw to the transcription of the texts, the interpretation of which, from manuscript form, was often difficult.

Dealing with questions of aesthetic urbanism, La Construction des Villes shows Le Corbusier’s intellectual influences in the field of urbanism. Discontent that the script was not sufficiently avant-garde, he abandoned it soon after it was written in the early 20th century. It was only in the late 1970s that American historian H. Allen Brooks discovered 250 pages of the forgotten manuscript in Switzerland. The author of this book, Christoph Schnoor, later discovered another 350 handwritten pages of the original manuscript, consisting of extracts, chapters, and bibliographic notes. This splendid find enabled the re-establishment of the manuscript as Le Corbusier had abandoned it, unfinished, in the spring of 1911. This volume offers an unbiased extension of our knowledge of Le Corbusier and his work. In addition, it reminds us of the urban design innovations of the very early 20th century which can still serve as valuable lessons for a new understanding of contemporary urban design.

While past utopias were conceived in terms of an ideal geometry, contemporary exemplary models of urban design seek technological solutions of optimal organisation. The Venice Variations explores Venice as a prototypical city that may hold unique answers to the ancient narrative of utopia. Venice was not the result of a preconceived ideal but the pragmatic outcome of social and economic networks of communication. Its urban creativity, though, came to represent the quintessential combination of place and institutions of its time. Through a discussion of Venice and two other works owing their inspiration to this city – Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities and Le Corbusier’s Venice Hospital – Sophia Psarra describes Venice as a system that starts to resemble a highly probabilistic ‘algorithm’, that is, a structure with a small number of rules capable of producing a large number of variations. The rapidly escalating processes of urban development around our big cities share many of the motivations for survival, shelter and trade that brought Venice into existence. Rather than seeing these places as problems to be solved, we need to understand how urban complexity can evolve, as happened from its unprepossessing origins in the marshes of the Venetian lagoon to the ‘model city’ that endured a thousand years. Le Corbusier himself suppressed publication of this book during his lifetime; after his death, the text was released as “an unprefaced last confession.” Journey to the East can be read as a bildungsroman by a young author who would go on to become one of the greatest architects of the twentieth century. It is very much a story of awakening and a voyage of discoveries, recording a seven-month journey that took Le Corbusier from Berlin through Vienna, Budapest, Bucharest, Istanbul, Athos, Athens, Naples, and Rome, among other places. Le Corbusier considered this journey the most significant of his life; the compulsion he felt to record images and impressions established a practice he would continue for the rest of his career. For the next five decades, he would fill notebooks with ideas and sketches; he never stopped deriving inspiration from the memories of his first contact with the East, making this volume as much a historical document as a personal confession and diary. As usual, it was the poor who suffered most as they were herded into tower-blocks. These were often grouped into estates that ringed many towns and cities, which then degenerated into high-rise slums with all the well-known attendant social problems. This book exposes the myths that surround Le Corbusier, detailing the endless failures of his proposals and his projects. These were due to his profound dishonesty, both as a person and as an architect. His legacy was an architectural profession that believed, and still believe, they were designing buildings based on logic, functionality and honesty whereas they were doing the opposite.
