Book excerpt: Brigitta's adventures continue with THE RUINS OF NOE, which picks up where Book One, BRIGITTA OF THE WHITE FOREST, leaves off. ~ ~ ~ "I don't understand," said Brigitta, and then glanced back down as the baby yawned and opened her eyes. They were crystal white. "She has no destiny." Ondelle reached in, picked the baby up, and cradled it in her arms. "The Ethereals have not visited her." ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ A child born with no destiny: one of many signs that the White Forest faeries had lost touch with the Ethereals, the Ancient Ones. High Priestess Ondelle is convinced by an old proverb that one faerie is fated to travel to the former home of the Ancients, the Ruins of Noe, to find the answer. That faerie, she believes, is Brigitta. Ondelle and Brigitta set off to save their forest once again, but when they arrive in Noe they discover something they never learned from any faerie tale. Why had this dark secret been kept from them? Why in the name of Faweh had the Ancients left some faeries behind?

Book Fat Leonard

Download or read book Fat Leonard written by Craig Whitlock and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-05-14 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 New York Times bestselling author Craig Whitlock’s masterful account of one of the biggest public corruption scandals in American history—exposing how a charismatic Malaysian defense contractor bribed scores of high-ranking military officers, defrauded the US Navy of tens of millions of dollars, and jeopardized our nation’s security. All the admirals in the US Navy knew Leonard Glenn Francis—either personally or by his legendary reputation. He was the larger-than-life defense contractor who greeted them on the pier whenever they visited ports in Asia, ready to show them a good time after weeks at sea while his company resupplied their ships and submarines. He was famed throughout the fleet for the gluttonous parties he hosted for officers: $1,000-per-person dinners at Asia’s swankiest restaurants, featuring unlimited Dom Pérignon, Cuban cigars, and sexy young women. On the surface, with his flawless American accent, he seemed like a true friend of the Navy. What the brass didn’t realize, until far too late, was that Francis had seduced them by exploiting their entitlement and hubris. While he was bribing them with gifts, lavish meals, and booze-fueled orgies, he was making himself obscenely wealthy by bilking American taxpayers. Worse, he was stealing military secrets from under the admirals’ noses and compromising national security. Based on reams of confidential documents—including the blackmail files that Francis kept on Navy officers—Fat Leonard is the full, unvarnished story of a world-class con man and a captivating testament to the corrosive influence of greed within the ranks of the American military.

Book Diagnostic and Interventional Catheterization in Congenital Heart Disease

Download or read book Diagnostic and Interventional Catheterization in Congenital Heart Disease written by James E. Lock and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardiac catheterization has long been a central diagnostic modality in the evaluation of children, adolescents, and adults with congenital heart disease, and in children with acquired heart disease. Over the past two decades, transcatheter interventions have become equally important in the treatment of pediatric and congenital heart disease. Some transcatheter therapies have become established as the standard of care for congenital cardiovascular anomalies previously managed surgically, others serve to supplement surgery in the integrated management of complex lesions, and still others are in their infancy, as pediatric interventional cardiology continues to advance in step with the broader field of pediatric cardiovascular medicine. Since the previous edition of this book, new technologies and techniques have been introduced to the field of pediatric interventional cardiology, much has been learned about established transcatheter therapies, and there has been a substantial increase in the volume of published data on outcomes of transcatheter procedures in congenital and pediatric heart disease. With increasing experience, the role of interventional catheterization has become solidified as an integral component of the comprehensive management of patients with essentially all forms of congenital heart disease. Cardiac catheterization has also become established as a distinct subspecialty within the discipline of pediatric cardiology, and at many centers has become the purview of cardiologists who have received specialized training in interventional catheterization and whose practice is focused on catheterization. This book is targeted to trainees and established interventional cardiologists alike, and is intended as a comprehensive reference for the clinical practice of diagnostic and interventional cardiology in pediatric and congenital heart disease. In the organization of this book, a combination of procedure-based and problem-based approaches has been employed. The structure of the book has been updated to make it more reader friendly, chapters have been added to address new techniques and problems in the field, and greater emphasis has been placed on evaluation of outcomes of transcatheter interventions in congenital heart disease. Section 1 covers the fundamentals of cardiac catheterization, with chapters devoted to pre-procedure patient evaluation, sedation and anesthesia, vascular access and related issues, catheterization equipment ands its use, hemodynamic evaluation, angiography, radiation and radiation safety, and echocardiography in the catheterization lab. Sections 2 through 4 include procedure-based chapters that are organized according to the technical type of intervention. Section 2 is devoted to transcatheter interventions for obstructive lesions, including valvar stenoses and vascular obstructions. Section 3 includes chapters that cover interventions to close various pathologic intracardiac communications and vascular anomalies. Section 4 includes chapters covering interventions performed to create or enlarge intracardiac communications, as well as other interventions. Section 5 focuses on the applications of catheterization and transcatheter interventions in the evaluation and management of specific patient populations. This problem-based or patient-based focus, which is substantially expanded from the previous edition of the book, reflects the expanding role of catheterization in the comprehensive management of pediatric and congenital heart disease, and addresses emerging applications of transcatheter interventions, including management of the patient receiving extracorporeal circulatory support, hybrid transcatheter-surgical interventions, and prenatal cardiac intervention. Section 6 includes two chapters that cover outcome assessment and regulatory issues pertinent to the pediatric cardiology in general and interventional cardiology in particular.

Book excerpt: The 3:15 EXPERIMENT comprises the results of an experiment in which the four authors rose at 3:15 A.M. every day in the month of August from the years 1993-2000 and wrote. Some poems, some prose, some dream-drenched euphoric scrawl, some devine journaling recording the weird magic of that middle hour. "In 1994...I was awake at 3:15 almost every night all August. This writing-by-alarm is one out of a large -- infinite? -- bag of tricks. The self outside the self. To get ourselves to pay attention differently, unawares" -- Jen Hofer. "The book is full of marvelous 'good times' as well -- with language, zones, emotions & political conventions... -- the stuff & dross & excitement of existing experimentally in the minds of four exceptional writers" -- Anne Waldman.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bram Stoker Award–winning short story collection. “These solidly crafted tales consistently evoke an enjoyably unsettling mood of horror.” —Publishers Weekly Thomas F. Monteleone displays his mastery of the horror genre in the selected short fiction of Fearful Symmetries, collected works spanning more than twenty years of his career. Revel in the deftly deployed classic horror tropes of these twenty-six stories, from their Lovecraftian monsters and archetypal vampires to Bradbury-esque mysteries and Twilight Zone-type tales. In “The Night Is Freezing Fast,” a mysterious hitchhiker emerges from a white-out winter storm, following a boy and his grandfather into an ever-more dangerous evening. “Love Letters”—written as a series of letters from a backwoods Pennsylvanian farmer, a private investigator, and an adult pen pal service—subtly instills psychological suspense into the epistolary form. From celebrity-hunting vampires in “Triptych di Amore” to Lovecraftian behemoths in “Yog Sothoth, Superstar,” there’s a skillfully told trope for every horror reader. With a wry author’s note accompanying each story, and an introduction from the late Rick Hautala, the Bram Stoker Award–winning Fearful Symmetries thrills and disturbs with its twisted tales. Praise for Thomas F. Monteleone “Monteleone has a dark imagination, a wicked pen, and the rare ability to convey an evil chill with words.” —Dean Koontz, New York Times–bestselling author “Tom’s an expert storyteller.” —F. Paul Wilson, author of The Keep and Deep as the Marrow “A vastly entertaining novel of horror and suspense [that poses] difficult questions about the nature of man, God and the devil.” —Los Angeles Daily News “The story is irresistible, moving to a mighty climax.” —The New York Times
