Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twilight in Italy The imperial road to Italy goes from Munich across the Tyrol, through Innsbruck and Bozen to Verona, over the mountains. Here the great processions passed as the emperors went South, or came home again from rosy Italy to their own Germany. And how much has that old imperial vanity clung to the German soul? Did not the German kings inherit the empire of bygone Rome? It was not a very real empire, perhaps, but the sound was high and splendid. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Voyage en Italie English Edition written by François-René de Chateaubriand and published by . This book was released on 2015-11-28 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voyage en Italie - François-René de Chateaubriand. A translation into English by A. S. Kline. Published with selected illustrations. Chateaubriand's Voyage en Italie, describes his Italian travels in the years 1803-4, during the first of his visits to the country. From France he crossed the Alps to Rome and its environs, from which he subsequently travelled to Naples, where Vesuvius, Baiae, and Pompeii figured amongst the sights he visited. His knowledge of the Classical world informs his wanderings among its ruins, and he enjoys the poetry of the picturesque while reflecting on the grandeur of the past. Rome, for him, represents a meeting of the Classical and Christian worlds, magnificent but in many ways a hollow tribute to human vanity, a theme he will revisit in his later travels to Greece, the Levant and the Holy Land. Naples represents a more picturesque and vibrant Italy. Articulating both cultural quest and voyage for pleasure, Chateaubriand writes of his journey as a 'tourist' rather than a scholar or adventurer, penning the work in the form of letters, derived from his travel notes and designed for his interested friends. Here he mingles personal memories with aesthetic and historical perceptions, against the background in which he is most at home, the European heritage, the works of the great poets, landscape and ruins, allowing him to muse freely on transience, the human voyage, and on beauty, found or created. Download or read book The Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus Vol 1 written by Washington Irving and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus, Vol. 1: To Which Are Added Those of His Companions Being at Bordeaux, in the winter of 1825-6, I received a letter from my friend Mr. Alexander Everett, Minister Plenipotentiary of the United States at Madrid, inviting me to visit that capital, and informing me, as an inducement to do so at an early period, that there was a work then in the press, edited by Don Martin Fernandez de Navarrete, Secretary of the Royal Academy of History, &c. &c. containing a collection of documents relative to the voyages of Columbus, among which were many of a highly important nature, recently discovered. Mr. Everett expressed an opinion that a version of the work into English, by one of our country, would be peculiarly desirable, and thought that it might furnish me with an interesting and agreeable occupation during my sojourn in the Spanish capital. I concurred with him in the opinion, and having for some time contemplated a visit to Madrid, I shortly after set off for that capital, with an idea of undertaking, while there, the translation of the work. Soon after my arrival, the publication of Mr. Navarrete made its appearance. I found it to contain many documents hitherto unknown, which threw additional lights on the discovery of the new world, and which reflected great credit on the researches of the learned editor. Still the whole presented rather a mass of rich materials for history, than a history itself. There were precious tracts for the mere man of research, but the sight of disjointed papers and official documents is apt to be repulsive to the general reader, who seeks for clear and connected narrative. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cart of Many Colors a Story of Italy Signs over the little shops would be written in Italian words; and all the babies would have dark Italian eyes and Shy Italian smiles; and all the people in the street would talk and laugh and sing in Italian; and out of all the doorways would come the smell of Italian cooking. And sometimes, at night, the whole street would be decked and garlanded with little electric lights, red and white and green, to celebrate the birth day Of the Italian saint who used to be the guardian spirit of the old Village in Italy, and who of course had emigrated with his villagers when they came to the new world. The Italians are not the only people who get together in groups and colonies in Our Amer ican cities. The Poles, the Russian Jews, the Germans, the Chinese, all the lonely new immi grants do it. They feel strange and far away from their own lands in this new country, and they want to live next door to some one who understands their language and their Old life. But thoughtful Americans are beginning to see that these little patches of Poland, Germany, Italy, are almost as far from America as if they were still on the other Side of the ocean. Daily messages, by cable and wireless, flash between Italy and America, but between Little Italy and Riverside Drive, in New York, there is no wire less; Mars and the Earth are not more far apart in some ways. It is to help Old Ameri cans and new Americans to get together and understand each other that little books like this one are written, - old Americans whose grand parents were born here, and new Americans whose children will be born here.
