Book The Promise Basket

Book excerpt: A stone when it's thrown can damage, can break, but nothing can shatter the promise I make. So begins the poem a mother writes on a scrap of paper. She wraps the paper around a stone and places it in a basket to give to her daughter on her first birthday. They are poor, but the mother is determined that gifts will be given when gifts need giving. She keeps her promise, and the Promise Basket, too. Every time there is a need for gifts, the mother finds a pretty stone to tie up with paper and ribbon, and gives it to her daughter in the basket. She continues the tradition over the years until her daughter has a baby of her own... The love between a mother and her daughter is celebrated in this lyrical story from Bill Richardson, featuring colorful illustrations by Slavka Kolesar.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did Guatemalan immigrant Mino TorrËs try to rape Quebec student Ariane? What was the failed attemptís aftermath? In this terse, prize-winning novel, Marie HÈlËne Poitras, with an imagination tutored by the Minotaur myth, offers a controversial tale about a thug who exults in his ferocious urges and is as incorrigible as a primal force. TorrËs (the bull) enthusiastically and unapologetically seeks hectic transcendence through rape and recurring fits of epilepsy. Ariane (Ariadne), straying into his twisted, downtown Montreal labyrinth, suffers the consequences of his random sexual predation, though significantly, her refusal to be a terrorized and passive victim haunts him. Arianeís deliverance from his maze, her conquest of persistent fears, is prolonged past her assailantís capture. Once more she must learn to live and loveñin particular, menñto pick up and follow the thread of human trust, to feel sure again about her flatís dark places and her walk-in cupboardís contents. On the site of the Berlin Wall, in a reunified Germany that has survived its own and other regimesí violent perversions, she permits herself to be gently hoisted up and passed from palm-to-palm over a vast and joy-filled crowd. she permits herself to be gently hoisted up and passed from palm-to-palm over a vast and joy-filled crowd.

Book Of Bicycles Bakelites and Bulbs

Download or read book Of Bicycles Bakelites and Bulbs written by Wiebe E. Bijker and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1997-01-03 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book crystallizes and extends the important work Wiebe Bijker has done in the last decade to found a full-scale theory of sociotechnical change that describes where technologies come from and how societies deal with them. Of Bicycles, Bakelites, and Bulbs integrates detailed case studies with theoretical generalizations and political analyses to offer a fully rounded treatment both of the relations between technology and society and of the issues involved in sociotechnical change. The stories of the the safety bicycle, the first truly synthetic plastic, and the fluorescent light bulb—each a fascinating case study in itself—reflect a cross section of time periods, engineering and scientific disciplines, and economic, social, and political cultures. The bicycle story explores such issues as the role of changing gender relationships in shaping a technology; the Bakelite story examines the ways in which social factors intrude even in cases of seemingly pure chemistry and entrepreneurship; and the fluorescent bulb story offers insights into the ways in which political and economic relationships can affect the form of a technology. Bijker's method is to use these case studies to suggest theoretical concepts that serve as building blocks in a more and more inclusive theory, which is then tested against further case studies. His main concern is to create a basis for science, technology, and social change that uncovers the social roots of technology, making it amenable to democratic politics.
