Book Vox Humana Craftsmanship

Download or read book Vox Humana Craftsmanship written by Girėnas Povilionis and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-12-28 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a thorough analysis focused on the sound expression produced by human-crafted musical instrument – a pipe organ, in which various components blend into a complex whole to produce a wide range of timbres. The sound produced by wooden and metal pipes of a variety of sizes is an integral part of the instrument’s unique character, while the organ stop is like its signature, from which one can judge about the size and style of the instrument, an organ building school or even an organ master, to which it is attributable. Precise identification of the name of the stop in accordance to both the pipework itself and the authentic inscriptions on the pipes is instrumental in investigating the geographic origins and authorship of an organ. The monograph focuses on the craftsmanship of complex and historically influential organ stop Vox humana. Its research and definition provides specific information distinguishing particular features in the variety of organ building traditions and discussing the differences in organ sound perception and production. The volume is aimed at art and music historians, as well as musicologists and scholars researching restoration techniques. The book contains supplemental material with video and audio material as well as photo-documentation of authentic Vox humana examples. The material is placed in the online catalog, which may be accessed by scanning the QR code in the appendix of the book. dsgdsgds

Book Music in Chopin s Warsaw

Download or read book Music in Chopin s Warsaw written by Halina Goldberg and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2008-03-04 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Warsaw was aware of and in tune with the most recent European styles and fashions in music, but it was also the cradle of a vernacular musical language that was initiated by the generation of Polish composers before Chopin and which found its full realization in his work. Had Chopin been born a decade earlier or a decade later, Goldberg argues, the capital - devastated by warfare and stripped of all cultural institutions - could not have provided support for his talent. The young composer would have been compelled to seek musical education abroad and thus would have been deprived of the specifically Polish experience so central to his musical style."--BOOK JACKET.

Book The Organ As a Mirror of Its Time North European Reflections 1610 2000 Text CD

Download or read book The Organ As a Mirror of Its Time North European Reflections 1610 2000 Text CD written by University of Rochester Kerala J. Snyder Professor Emerita of Musicology at The Eastman School of Music and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2002-06-28 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because it has always represented a rich collaboration of the music, art, architecture, handicraft and science of its day, the organ, more than any other instrument, continues to reflect the spirit of the age in which it was built. The Organ as a Mirror of its Time, the first book to consider this instrument's historical and cultural significance, reflects the efforts of twenty leading scholars of the organ. The book chronicles the history of six organs in Scandinavia and Northern Germany, at least one specimen for every century from 1600 to the present. By considering their original contexts and their histories since they were built, as well as the extraordinary coincidences that link them together, the book offers a unique perspective on the cultural history of northern Europe. A CD with appropriate repertoire played on each of the six instruments accompanies the book.

Book A Provincial Organ Builder in Victorian England

Download or read book A Provincial Organ Builder in Victorian England written by Gordon D.W. Curtis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Sweetland was a Bath organ builder who flourished from c.1847 to 1902 during which time he built about 300 organs, mostly for churches and chapels in Somerset, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire, but also for locations scattered south of a line from the Wirral to the Wash. Gordon Curtis places this work of a provincial organ builder in the wider context of English musical life in the latter half of the nineteenth century. An introductory chapter reviews the provincial musical scene and sets the organ in the context of religious worship, public concerts and domestic music-making. The book relates the biographical details of Sweetland's family and business history using material obtained from public and family records. Curtis surveys Sweetland's organ- building work in general and some of his most important organs in detail, with patents and other inventions explored. The musical repertoire of the provinces, particularly with regard to organ recitals, is discussed, as well as noting Sweetland's acquaintances, other organ builders, architects and artists. Part II of the book consists of a Gazetteer of all known organs by Sweetland organized by counties. Each entry contains a short history of the instrument and its present condition. Since there is no definitive published list of his work, and as all the office records were lost in a fire many years ago, this will be the nearest approach to a comprehensive list for this builder.
