The advice and activities are based on knowledge of the processes affecting speech and language development in typically developing children, the identified difficulties of children with Down syndrome and current research findings from studies evaluating effective remedial strategies. It also includes checklists for evaluating and recording children's development of interactive communication skills, speech sounds, vocabulary, sentences and grammar. The programme will enable parents, teachers and therapists to help children with Down syndrome to learn to talk, to talk in sentences, and to develop their speech clarity and conversational skills. It starts with activities to develop the foundation skills in infancy that lead on to talking, including the use of gesture and sign to support comprehension, and with an emphasis on speech sound work from infancy.Building a spoken vocabulary to 400 words by 5 years of age is seen as a priority, in order to develop grammar and phonology, and a recommended vocabulary programme with record sheets is included. The ways in which reading activities should be used to support all aspects of speech and language learning during preschool years are mentioned but the detailed advice on teaching early reading is in the reading module. This module follows on from Speech and language development for individuals with Down syndrome - An overview DSii-03-01] which should be read first, to provide the reader with an adequate understanding of speech and language development to be successful in using this programme.

Book excerpt: Individuals with Down syndrome demonstrate significant language delays as compared to individuals with intellectual disabilities and children of similar mental age. The lateralization of speech perception and speech production in individuals with Down syndrome has been investigated to determine possible links between cerebral asymmetry and speech difficulties. The present study investigated the performance of individuals with Down syndrome, individuals with intellectual disabilities, and nondisabled children matched on mental age on dichotic listening tasks using digits and consonant vowel syllables as stimuli in both Free Report and Directed Attention conditions. Performance on the dichotic listening tasks was further examined in terms of the participants' knowledge or understanding of number concepts and the novelty of the task and stimulus conditions. Knowledge of number concepts was assessed using nine experimental tests developed by the author for this study. Ten adolescents with Down syndrome, ten non-Down syndrome adolescents with intellectual disabilities of unknown aetiologies, and nine nondisabled preschoolers participated in the present study. On the dichotic listening tasks, the three groups showed comparable patterns of responding to dichotically-presented pairs of stimuli. All groups showed a right hemisphere - left ear superiority for digits and a left hemisphere - right ear advantage for CVs. In terms of knowledge of number concepts, all three groups were equally skillful at counting. The adolescents with Down syndrome were significantly better than either of the other groups on numeral reading. All groups performed uniformly poorly on all tests of number word reading. The results of the correlation analyses of the relationships between the number concept tests and the lateralization indices provided tentative support for the hypotheses of a relationship between well developed knowledge of number concepts and left-hemisphere processing of digits and CVs. Goldberg and Costa's (1981) model of cerebral asymmetry accounts for the differential processing of the dichotic stimuli based on the difficulty of the dichotic task when digits are the stimuli. Furthermore, the findings are discussed in terms of Dehaene and Cohen's (1998) 'triple code' model for the representation of numbers. Task complexity, multiple dichotic trials, different dichotic listening procedures (i.e., stimulus detection), and more detailed analysis of cognitive and linguistic abilities are recommended as the focus of future research.

Book excerpt: It has been traditional in phonetic research to characterize monophthongs using a set of static formant frequencies, i.e., formant frequencies taken from a single time-point in the vowel or averaged over the time-course of the vowel. However, over the last twenty years a growing body of research has demonstrated that, at least for a number of dialects of North American English, vowels which are traditionally described as monophthongs often have substantial spectral change. Vowel inherent spectral change has been observed in speakers’ productions, and has also been found to have a substantial effect on listeners’ perception. In terms of acoustics, the traditional categorical distinction between monophthongs and diphthongs can be replaced by a gradient description of dynamic spectral patterns. This book includes chapters addressing various aspects of vowel inherent spectral change (VISC), including theoretical and experimental studies of the perceptually relevant aspects of VISC, the relationship between articulation (vocal-tract trajectories) and VISC, historical changes related VISC, cross-dialect, cross-language, and cross-age-group comparisons of VISC, the effects of VISC on second-language speech learning, and the use of VISC in forensic voice comparison.
