If you—your charismatic, beautifully erotic self—had died young, your ghost would count itself fortunate to have lived, loved, and flamed-out in the company of the wildly imaginative author of VOW. But it's not just ghosts who find themselves envisioned, en-fabled, sometimes horrifically, in these poems: An ex-husband, ex-lovers, and dear friends also populate these questioning, often darkly humorous lyrics. Like them, the future unsettles you because you have taken vows, too, and broken them. Take heart, you hold in your hands the poetic manual for how to proceed.

Book Someone Else s Wedding Vows

Download or read book Someone Else s Wedding Vows written by Bianca Stone and published by Tin House Books. This book was released on 2014-03-18 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The much-anticipated debut collection from a celebrated young poet, Someone Else's Wedding Vows marks the arrival of an exciting new voice in American poetry. Someone Else’s Wedding Vows reflects on the different forms of love, which can be both tremendously joyous and devastatingly destructive. The title poem confronts a human ritual of marriage from the standpoint of a wedding photographer. Within the tedium and alienation of the ceremony, the speaker grapples with a strange human hopefulness. In this vein, Stone explores our everyday patterns and customs, and in doing so, exposes them for their complexities. Drawing on the neurological, scientific, psychological, and even supernatural, this collection confronts the difficulties of love and family. Stone rankles with a desire to understand, but the questions she asks are never answered simply. These poems stroll along the abyss, pointing towards the absurdity of our choices. They recede into the imaginative in order to understand and translate the distressing nature of reality. It is a bittersweet question this book raises: Why we are like this? There is no easy answer. So while we look down at our hands, perplexed, Someone Else’s Wedding Vows raises a glass to the future.

Download or read book Come on All You Ghosts written by Matthew Zapruder and published by Copper Canyon Press. This book was released on 2012-12-11 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Charming, melancholy, hip."—Publishers Weekly, starred review "Zapruder's innovative style is provocative in its unusual juxtapositions of line, image and enjambments. . . . Highly recommended."—Library Journal Matthew Zapruder's third book mixes humor and invention with love and loss, as when the breath of a lover is compared to "a field of titanium gravestones / growing warmer in the sun." The title poem is an elegy for the heroes and mentors in the poet's life—from David Foster Wallace to the poet's father. Zapruder's poems are direct and surprising, and throughout the book he wrestles with the desire to do well, to make art, and to face the vast events of the day. Look out scientists! Today the unemployment rate is 9.4 percent. I have no idea what that means. I tried to think about it harder for a while. Then tried standing in an actual stance of mystery and not knowing towards the world. Which is my job. As is staring at the back yard and for one second believing I am actually rising away from myself. Which is maybe what I have in common right now with you . . . Matthew Zapruder holds degrees from Amherst College, UC Berkeley, and the University of Massachusetts. He is the author of two previous books, including The Pajamaist, which won the William Carlos Williams Award and was honored by Library Journal with a "Best Poetry Book of the Year" listing. He lives in San Francisco and is an editor at Wave Books.

Download or read book To Palp a Vow of Silence written by Louis A. Borgo and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-07-30 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is basically about a soldier and the memories of his life and how he became a soldier, and the experiences told in this book comprise a memoir, and you will go through chapters based on the three parts of the brain. The brain is one of the most mysterious things, and what I learned through the book process is that the brain triggers sorting actions, motions, feelings, and responses to the body. This book has themes of love, regret, enlightenment, being a brothers keeper, political views from a soldiers point of view, and war. The way it came to be was I grew up with a lot of veterans, had friends that went to war, as well as classmates, had letters written to me, e-mails sent to me, and I was going to enlist before a doctor explained his experience in working in military. So a lot of the information or material is based on what I lived through and learned. And what I learned is that the average soldier is told never to talk about feelings or emotions, just to react once he starts to feel he is dying. But what I found out is that a lot of their stories about how they became a soldier are similar. My book just points out from every side of a soldier: Why did you become a solider? And is it a better solution to war? And we all are human. All the collected stories create the events and the character of a soldier and his path to a rite of passage.
