Download or read book Voting Rites written by Ron Hirschbein and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1999-12-30 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does it really matter if a voter decides to vote-or, as a significant number of Americans do each election, not vote? Ron Hirschbein explores this issue and shows why enfranchisement cannot be understood unless it is placed in context and history. Clearly, the meaning of a vote depends upon the situation: a vote cast among the 400 of Athens or in the College of Cardinals has one significance; this is considerably different from pulling a lever every four years in a mass society of spectacles and commodities. Hirschbein also examines how voting was transformed from an expression of the political will of the Athenian polity into a sacred natural right-only to be turned to a ritual of mass society. First, Hirschbein looks at the right to vote as the centerpiece of American civic religion. He contrasts civic myths about enfranchisement with anthropological realities. Specifically he argues that, given the intractable mathematics of mass society, the chances that a single vote will determine the outcome of an election approach the infinitesimal. However, he suggests that voting plays a neglected ritual function by constructing, legitimizing, and celebrating political reality for players and spectators alike. Hirschbein then explicates the origins and evanescent meanings of enfranchisement by examining the theory and practice of voting among the citizenry of ancient Athens, medieval ecclesiastical bureaucrats, Enlightenment natural law thinkers, and the founders of the Virtuous Republic. He concludes with speculation about possible futures. A controversial and important analysis, this will be of interest to the general public as well as scholars, researchers, and policy makers involved with election issues and theories of democracy.

Book excerpt: This 'Yearbook' attends to various ways in which women were active and organized themselves in order to question sex and gender related issues in the political arena. Covering a diverse range of cultures and political situations the Yearbook discusses how women protested against perceived religious suppression; actively participated in local democratic political institutions whilst not really changing gender-roles; or discussed experienced discrepancies between socialism and feminism. How do women find their ways in democratic systems of governance? What do these systems offer them in terms of emancipation and involvement in political decision making affecting their lives?

Download or read book Nigeria s Critical Election 2011 written by John A. A. Ayoade and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elections have been central to regime collapse in Nigeria because they neither passed the test of citizens' acceptability nor electoral neutrality. They always pushed the country to a dangerous brink which she has often survived after serious constitutional and political bruises. The general election of 1964 rocked the delicate balance of the country resulting in the military coup of January 15, 1966 and a thirty month civil war. The subsequent effort of the military at restructuring the country did not go far enough to win the civic confidence of the people. The military availed itself of another opportunity of tinkering with the system in 1993. However, it demonstrated that it was not immune to civic dishonesty when it annulled the widely acclaimed free and fair presidential election in June 12, 1993. By fits and starts, Nigeria held another election in 1999 which was tolerated only because of citizens' fatigue of military rule. The elections of 2003 and 2007 were classic examples of make-belief democracy. The feeding of inequity and, if you will, domination, persisted. A combination of fortune, trickery and arm twisting produced a power shift in favour of Dr. Goodluck Ebele Azikwe Jonathan in April 2011. The subsequent attempt by the north to create a strategic consensus did not save it from being pushed into fringe politics forcing some of its spokespersons to vow that they will make governance impossible. The election was better than the worst but much still remains to be done.
Download or read book The Virgin Vote written by Jon Grinspan and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2016-02-13 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There was a time when young people were the most passionate participants in American democracy. In the second half of the nineteenth century--as voter turnout reached unprecedented peaks--young people led the way, hollering, fighting, and flirting at massive midnight rallies. Parents trained their children to be "violent little partisans," while politicians lobbied twenty-one-year-olds for their "virgin votes"—the first ballot cast upon reaching adulthood. In schoolhouses, saloons, and squares, young men and women proved that democracy is social and politics is personal, earning their adulthood by participating in public life. Drawing on hundreds of diaries and letters of diverse young Americans--from barmaids to belles, sharecroppers to cowboys--this book explores how exuberant young people and scheming party bosses relied on each other from the 1840s to the turn of the twentieth century. It also explains why this era ended so dramatically and asks if aspects of that strange period might be useful today. In a vivid evocation of this formative but forgotten world, Jon Grinspan recalls a time when struggling young citizens found identity and maturity in democracy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The start of a brand-new series featuring Navy SEALs who will do whatever it takes to keep their women safe. When introverted cartoonist Remi Stephenson dumps her cheating ex and goes on their Hawaiian vacation solo, even her creative mind can’t imagine being purposely stranded in the ocean…with a handsome, muscular, brave Navy SEAL. Even more unbelievable is the spark between them. Surely this is just rebound hormones. Right? Because who finds their soul mate in the middle of a life-or-death situation? And what would a SEAL want with a curvy, nerdy artist, anyway? Of course, none of those doubts stop Remi and Vincent from making plans to get together back in California, even before they’re rescued. When Vincent “Kevlar” Hill gets dumped by his ex because she can’t handle the demands of his job, he cuts his losses and heads out on the Hawaiian holiday she planned with his money. He has zero interest in a vacation fling…but tell that to his brain and body when he finds himself bobbing in the middle of the Pacific, sans boat, miles from shore, with the most intriguing woman he’s ever met. They’ve both been burned, and Kevlar has no proof Remi can handle his career any better than his ex, but after her calm courage in the face of being stranded, he’s willing to take the risk. Remi and Kevlar’s attraction runs hot, even as they try to take things slow, but they can’t forget that someone arranged for them to be left in that ocean. Maybe it was one of their exes, looking for a little payback. Or maybe it was an unknown enemy, looking for something a little more permanent…and determined to finish the job. **Protecting Remi is the first book in the SEAL of Protection: Alliance Series. But their mission becomes infinitely more complicated when they run afoul of a band of robbers. The group takes Remi and several students hostage, and there are signs that the kidnapping is related to the missing scroll. Download or read book Sex and Gender in the 2016 Presidential Election written by Caroline Heldman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-09-07 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to understand the motivations for and implications of Hillary Clinton's historic run for the White House- and her subsequent defeat-the authors explore sexism and gender bias in U.S. political and social culture. While there is some indication that overt sexism toward women in politics is declining, whether this is true for women who run for the highest office in American politics remains relatively unknown. Hillary Clinton's historic run as the 2016 Democratic nominee, however, allows scholars and journalists to contextualize decades of scholarship on sex, gender, and the American presidency. In Sex and Gender in the 2016 Presidential Election, the authors, all experts on gender in politics, analyze the nature of gender in public opinion, media coverage, social media, and culture during the 2016 presidential election. They assess whether conventional expectations and theories hold up in today's sociopolitical climate. Moreover, they consider how Clinton's foray into relatively uncharted territory might redirect the political field-and its implications for women with political ambitions-going forward.
