Book Beyond the Trauma Vortex

Download or read book Beyond the Trauma Vortex written by Gina Ross and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Beyond the Trauma Vortex, Gina Ross proposes a collaboration between the media, trauma researchers, and helping officials in order to break the vicious cycle of trauma and violence. The media, Ross suggests, can use their tremendous influence to promote peace rather than violence and to heal wounded psyches, communities, and nations. Delving first into the destructive nature of the "trauma vortex" through a variety of individual and historical examples, Ross then offers her insight into an alternate, restorative "healing vortex." By focusing on the interrelatedness of personal and collective healing, the author makes a compelling case for why--and how--media professionals can play an influential role in effecting widespread healing for their viewers and for themselves.

Book Tune In to Wow Leadership

Download or read book Tune In to Wow Leadership written by Sheri Staak and published by Greenleaf Book Group. This book was released on 2015-01-06 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A viewing guide to help leaders focus on their own development and set their internal DVR to WOW! The fictional world of TV depicts a plethora of characters who embody what Sheri Staak calls “WOW leadership qualities.” (Incompetents are not in short supply either.) Drawing from classics and recent favorites alike, she showcases heroes or leaders from NCIS to Hawaii Five-O - Blue Bloods as well as villains-from The Sopranos to NYPD Blue to Breaking Bad-to illustrate her insights in entertaining and vividly memorable ways. Far from taking a conventional approach, Staak posits that whether you’re a veteran executive or an aspiring manager, you can learn a great deal about becoming an extraordinary leader by tuning in to popular TV programs. She's selected specific "scenes in episodes" or "instances" that pinpoint what to do and what not to do in the workplace to invest in others, constantly improve your own skills, build trust, and earn respect. She supplements those “Tune In” features with practical lists of key actions to take to strengthen the character traits every top-notch leader must possess. And for times when you’re faced with an issue such as broken trust or poor communication that must be repaired, Staak draws on her estimable experience to suggest implementable, effective solutions. Those bulleted lists, plus the exercises she calls “WOW in Action,” will help you quickly evaluate where you stand in comparison to the WOW ideal. Be you a Millennial or a Baby Boomer, you’ll learn how to become the type of effective communicator, confident visionary, inspirational motivator, agent of change, and bold decision maker your direct reports will proclaim to be a “great boss.”

Book Always End with the Beginning in Mind

Download or read book Always End with the Beginning in Mind written by Donald F. White and published by Made For Success Publishing. This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world likes to believe life is a series of endings. Some are good, others bad, but things always end. In the modern age, the movie ends, the television show ends, the book finishes with "The End", and we start to believe life is about endings. Yet life continues, without end. Recently, my young nephew died, but the next day life went on without him. This book is based on the premise that endings are just new beginnings. Everyone can end, with the beginning in mind. Giving up the concept of "everything ends" is one of the most important steps in business continuity. People love to talk about Succession Planning, but few ever accomplish the task. The numbers are staggering. The US Department of Labor Statistics tell us after one year in business, 20% of new businesses in America fail, but after 20 years only about 20% of those same businesses will have survived. Of those who survive, less than 20% will continue to a second generation! Most businesses have a cessation plan (a plan that leads to a business ceasing to exist), while very few have succession plans (a plan that leads to a business not only continuing, but thriving after the founder exits). In his book, "Always End with the Beginning in Mind", Donald White takes you on his journey that resulted in a successful business continuation, and will give a founder of a business the steps necessary for a succession plan to actually succeed. A well-thought out and properly executed Succession Plan is a classic win-win. In fact, it is a win-win-win. It is a win for the company, namely the clients and staff who are able to enjoy continuity after the founder's exit. It is a win for the successor, who is able to build on the success of the founder. Finally, it is a win for the founder, who is able to exit on their own volition and see what they have built continue to prosper for years to come. Firms can succeed into perpetuity. They do not need to eventually cease. A businessperson who exits a business without seeing their exit as an ending, but as a new beginning, both for themselves and the business, can enjoy seeing the firm they spent a lifetime building continue to prosper after the business transitions to new leadership and simultaneously enjoy a new season of life personally. Do not leave business continuity to fate! Read this book and discover the tools necessary to move from a reactive cessation plan to a proactive plan of succession.

Book I of the Vortex

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rodolfo R. Llinas
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2002-02-22
  • ISBN : 9780262621632
  • Pages : 324 pages

Download or read book I of the Vortex written by Rodolfo R. Llinas and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2002-02-22 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A highly original theory of how the mind-brain works, based on the author's study of single neuronal cells. In I of the Vortex, Rodolfo Llinas, a founding father of modern brain science, presents an original view of the evolution and nature of mind. According to Llinas, the "mindness state" evolved to allow predictive interactions between mobile creatures and their environment. He illustrates the early evolution of mind through a primitive animal called the "sea squirt." The mobile larval form has a brainlike ganglion that receives sensory information about the surrounding environment. As an adult, the sea squirt attaches itself to a stationary object and then digests most of its own brain. This suggests that the nervous system evolved to allow active movement in animals. To move through the environment safely, a creature must anticipate the outcome of each movement on the basis of incoming sensory data. Thus the capacity to predict is most likely the ultimate brain function. One could even say that Self is the centralization of prediction. At the heart of Llinas's theory is the concept of oscillation. Many neurons possess electrical activity, manifested as oscillating variations in the minute voltages across the cell membrane. On the crests of these oscillations occur larger electrical events that are the basis for neuron-to-neuron communication. Like cicadas chirping in unison, a group of neurons oscillating in phase can resonate with a distant group of neurons. This simultaneity of neuronal activity is the neurobiological root of cognition. Although the internal state that we call the mind is guided by the senses, it is also generated by the oscillations within the brain. Thus, in a certain sense, one could say that reality is not all "out there," but is a kind of virtual reality.

After being separated from Alicia, Arturo leaves the high plains for the jungle, where he witnesses firsthand the horrid conditions of those forced or tricked into tapping rubber trees. A story populated by con men, rubber barons, and the unrelenting landscape, The Vortex is both a denunciation of the sensational human-rights abuses that took place during the Amazonian rubber boom and one of the most famous renderings of the natural environment in Latin American literary history.
