Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides in-depth analyses of vortex dominated flows via matched and multiscale asymptotics, and demonstrates how insight gained through these analyses can be exploited in the construction of robust, efficient, and accurate numerical techniques. The book explores the dynamics of slender vortex filaments in detail, including fundamental derivations, compressible core structure, weakly non-linear limit regimes, and associated numerical methods. Similarly, the volume covers asymptotic analysis and computational techniques for weakly compressible flows involving vortex-generated sound and thermoacoustics. The book is addressed to both graduate students and researchers.

Book excerpt: Honoring the contributions of one of the field''s leading experts, Lu Ting, this indispensable volume contains important new results at the cutting edge of research. A wide variety of significant new analytical and numerical results in critical areas are presented, including point vortex dynamics, superconductor vortices, cavity flows, vortex breakdown, shock/vortex interaction, wake flows, magneto-hydrodynamics, rotary wake flows, and hypersonic vortex phenomena. The book will be invaluable for those interested in the state of the art of vortex dominated flows, both from a theoretical and applied perspective. Professor Lu Ting and Joe Keller have worked together for over 40 years. In their first joint work entitled OC Periodic vibrations of systems governed by nonlinear partial differential equationsOCO, perturbation analysis and bifurcation theory were used to determine the frequencies and modes of vibration of various physical systems. The novelty was the application to partial differential equations of methods which, previously, had been used almost exclusively on ordinary differential equations. Professsor Lu Ting is an expert in both fluid dynamics and the use of matched asymptotic expansions. His physical insight into fluid flows has led the way to finding the appropriate mathematical simplications used in the solutions to many difficult flow problems."

Book Studies of Vortex Dominated Flows

Download or read book Studies of Vortex Dominated Flows written by M. Yousuff Hussaini and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the astrophysical scale of a swirling spiral galaxy, through the geophysical scale of a hurricane, down to the subatomic scale of elementary particles, vortical motion and vortex dynamics have played a profound role in our understanding of the physical world. Kuchemann referred to vortex dynamics as "the sinews and muscles of fluid motion. " In order to update our understanding of vortex dominated flows, NASA Langley Research Center and the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE) conducted a workshop during July 9-11, 1985. The subject was broadly divided into five overlapping topics vortex dynamics, vortex breakdown, massive separation, vortex shedding from sharp leading edges and conically separated flows. Some of the experts in each of these areas were invited to provide an overview of the subject. This volume is the proceedings of the workshop and contains the latest, theoretical, numerical, and experimental work in the above-mentioned areas. Leibovich, Widnall, Moore and Sirovich discussed topics on the fundamentals of vortex dynamics, while Keller and Hafez treated the problem of vortex break down phenomena; the contributions of Smith, Davis and LeBalleur were in the area of massive separation and inviscid-viscous interactions, while those of Cheng, Hoeijmakers and Munnan dealt with sharp-leading-edge vortex flows; and Fiddes and Marconi represented the category of conical separated flows.

Book Mesh Adaption Strategies for Vortex dominated Flows

Download or read book Mesh Adaption Strategies for Vortex dominated Flows written by Sean Javad Kamkar and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2011 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new adaptive mesh refinement strategy that is based on a coupled feature-detection and error-estimation approach is developed. The overall goal is to apply the proper degree of refinement to key vortical features in aircraft and rotorcraft wakes. The refinement paradigm is based on a two-stage process wherein the vortical regions are initially identified for refinement using feature-detection, and then the appropriate resolution is determined by the local solution error. The feature-detection scheme uses a local normalization procedure that allows it to automatically identify regions for refinement with threshold values that are not dependent upon the convective scales of the problem. An error estimator, based on the Richardson Extrapolation method, then supplies the identified features with appropriate levels of refinement. The estimator is shown to be well-behaved for steady-state and time-accurate aerodynamic flows. The above strategy is implemented within the Helios code, which features a dual-mesh paradigm of unstructured grids in the near-body domain, and adaptive Cartesian grids in the off-body domain. A main objective of this work is to control the adaption process so that high fidelity wake resolution is obtained in the off-body domain. The approach is tested on several theoretical and practical vortex-dominated flow-fields in an attempt to resolve wingtip vortices and rotor wakes. Accuracy improvements to rotorcraft performance metrics and increased wake resolution are simultaneously documented.

Book Numerical Simulation of Vortex Dominated Flows Using the Penalized VIC Method

Download or read book Numerical Simulation of Vortex Dominated Flows Using the Penalized VIC Method written by Seung-Jae Lee and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vorticity plays a key role in determining fluid flow dynamics, especially in vortex-dominated flows. Vortex methods, which are based on the vorticity-based formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations, have provided deeper insight into physical reality in a variety of flows using vorticity as a primary variable. The penalized vortex-in-cell (VIC) method is a state-of-the-art variant of vortex methods. In the penalized VIC method, Lagrangian fluid particles are traced by continuously updating their position and strength from solutions at an Eulerian grid. This hybrid method retains beneficial features of pure Lagrangian and Eulerian methods. It offers an efficient and effective way to simulate unsteady viscous flows, thereby enabling application to a wider range of problems in flows. This article presents the fundamentals of the penalized VIC method and its implementations.

Book A Study of the Vortex Flow Over 76 40 Deg Double Delta Wing

Download or read book A Study of the Vortex Flow Over 76 40 Deg Double Delta Wing written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-10-22 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A low-speed wind-tunnel study of the flow about a 76/40-deg double-delta wing is described for angles of attack ranging from -10 to 25 deg and Reynolds numbers ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 Million. The study was conducted to provide data for the purpose of understanding the vortical flow behavior and for validating Computational Fluid Dynamics methods. Flow visualization tests have provided insight into the effect of the angle of attack and Reynolds number of the vortex-dominated flow both on and off of the surface of the double-delta wing. Upper surface pressure recordings from pressure orifices and Pressure Sensitive Paint have provided data on the pressures induced by the vortices. Flowfield surveys were carried out at an angle of attack of 10 deg by using a thin 5-hole probe. Numerical solutions of the compressible thin-layer Navier-Stokes equations were conducted and compared to the experimental data. Verhaagen, N. G. and Jenkins, L. N. and Kern, S. B. and Washburn, A.
