Book The Dynamics of Rotating Fluids

Download or read book The Dynamics of Rotating Fluids written by P A Davidson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-06-28 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook on rotating fluid dynamics combines a pedagogical development of theoretical ideas with a description and analysis of many of the fascinating examples of rotating flows found in nature. The book is self-contained, starting in Part I with introductory chapters on fluid dynamics and waves. The largest section of the book is Part II, where a broad theoretical framework is developed for rotating flows, including Ekman layers, inertial waves, Taylor columns, Rossby waves, precession, instabilities, rotating convection, vortex breakdown, and rotating turbulence. The book ends, in Part III, with an analysis of some naturally occurring rotating flows, including tornadoes and dust devils, tidal vortices, tropical cyclones, convection in planetary cores, zonal winds in planetary atmospheres, and astrophysical accretion discs. Davidson presents a unique combination of a deep but broad theoretical framework with a detailed discussion of many naturally occurring flows. Moreover, the book places great emphasis on the pedagogical development of theoretical ideas and the physical insight that brings.

Book Vortex Wakes of Conventional Aircraft

Download or read book Vortex Wakes of Conventional Aircraft written by Coleman duPont Donaldson and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review is made of the present state of our knowledge of the vortex wakes of conventional aircraft. Included are discussions of wake rollup, geometry, instability, and turbulent aging. In the light of these discussions, a brief review is made of the persistence of vortices in the atmosphere, and design techniques which might be used to minimize wake hazard are considered.

Book Nonlinear Instability of Nonparallel Flows

Download or read book Nonlinear Instability of Nonparallel Flows written by S.P. Lin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The IUTAM Symposium on Nonlinear Instability of Nonparallel Flows was held at Clarkson University, Potsdam, NY 13699-5725, USA from 26 to 31 July 1993. It consisted of 9 general speeches, 35 lectures and 15 poster-seminar presentations. The papers were grouped in fairly focused sessions on boundary layers, shear flows, vortices, wakes, nonlinear waves and jets. The symposium was fol lowed by a workshop in which the subject matter discussed was sum marized and some further work for future investigation was recom mended. The highlights of the workshop will be reported elsewhere. In this book many of the papers that describe the ideas presented at the symposium are collected to provide a reference for researchers in charting the future course of their studies in the area of nonlinear instability of nonparallel flows. The papers in this book are grouped under the following headings: • Boundary layers and shear flows • Compressibility and thermal effects • Vortices and wakes • Nonlinear waves and jets In the lead paper ofthis book M. E. Goldstein describes an asymp totic theory of nonlinear interaction between two spatially growing oblique waves on nonparallel boundary and free-shear layers. The wave interaction originates from the nonlinear critical layer and is responsive to weakly nonparallel effects. The theory results in a sys tem of integral differential equations which appear to be relevant near the upper branch of the neutral curve.
