Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vormorgen aims to collect all of Ernst Toller's poetic works in a single volume; the first to appear in nearly a century. This edition, in German and English, includes Toller's three principle poetic works: Vormorgen, The Poems of the Imprisoned, and The Book of Swallows, as well as his scattered, uncollected poems. Toller was a Jewish anarchist working in Munich, and was briefly the president of the Bavarian Soviet Republic (Münchner Räterepublik / Munich Worker's Republic), which was predominantly organized by poets and playwrights, so it's often been referred to as the regime of coffeehouse anarchists. The occupation began peacefully, with the anarchists occupying Munich without firing a shot, but was ended brutally a month later, on May Day, when the Freikorps were sent in. Over 600 people were killed, half of which were citizens killed in street fighting. Some were sentenced to death by firing squad, others were sentenced to prison. Ernst Toller was sent to Niederschönenfeld prison for five years, where he began working on the majority of his poems. When he was released, he was exiled to the UK, and later to the States. While living in New York, he received word that his mother and sister were sent to concentration camps, and he took his life in 1939.

Book The Plays of Ernst Toller

Download or read book The Plays of Ernst Toller written by Cecil Davies and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the fullest and most detailed study yet published in English of Ernst Toller's plays and their most significant productions. In particular the productions directed by Karl-Heinz Martin, Jurgen Fehling and Erwin Piscator are closely analyzed and the author demonstrates how, brilliant though they were, they obscured or even distorted Toller's intentions. The plays are seen as eminently stage-worthy while worth lies in Toller's use of language, both in prose and inverse. The neglected puppet-play The Scorned Lovers' Revenge is analyzed from a new perspective in the light, both of its language and its sexual theme, so important in Toller's writings as a whole. The reader is led to appreciate why Toller was regarded as the most outstanding German dramatist of his generation until, after his death in 1939 his reputation was overlaid by that of Brecht. This book should do much to restore Toller to his proper place in theatre history.

Book The Nation s Cause

Download or read book The Nation s Cause written by Elizabeth A. Marsland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we approach the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, this timely reissue, first published in 1991, evaluates the function of poetry in wartime Europe, arguing that war poetry must be understood as a social as well as a literary phenomenon. As well as locating the work of well-known French, English and German war poets in a European context, Elizabeth Marsland discusses lesser-known poetry of the war years, including poems by women and the neglected tradition of civilian protest through poetry. Identifying shared characteristics as well as the unique features of each nation’s poetry, The Nation’s Cause affords new insight into the relationship between nationalism and the social attitudes that determined the conduct of war.

Book Revolutionary Socialism in the Work of Ernst Toller

Download or read book Revolutionary Socialism in the Work of Ernst Toller written by Richard Dove and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1986 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ernst Toller's dramas are the product of reflection on his political experience. This study analyses his ideology of revolutionary Socialism and its articulation in his literary work. It adopts a chronological approach, placing great importance on primary sources. It also takes a synoptic view of his work, in which his public speaking, political journalism and documentary prose are shown to complement and clarify the better-known dramas. It demonstrates that the creative tension in Toller's work, often consciously transposed into the dialectic of dramatic conflict, is one of political ideas - of Anarchism and Marxism, idealism and materialism, voluntarism and determinism.

Book Writing Time

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sean Franzel
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2023-11-15
  • ISBN : 1501772589
  • Pages : 432 pages

Download or read book Writing Time written by Sean Franzel and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2023-11-15 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing Time shows how serial literature based in journals and anthologies shaped the awareness of time at a transformative moment in the European literary and political landscapes. Sean Franzel explores how German-speaking authors and editors "write time" both by writing about time and by mapping time itself through specific literary formats. Through case studies of such writers as F. J. Bertuch, K. A. Böttinger, J. W. Goethe, Ludwig Börne, and Heinrich Heine, Franzel analyzes how serial writing predicated on open-ended continuation becomes a privileged mode of social commentary and literary entertainment and provides readers with an ongoing "history" of the present, or Zeitgeschichte. Drawing from media theory and periodical studies as well as from Reinhart Koselleck's work on processes of temporalization and "untimely" models of historical time, Writing Time presents "smaller" literary forms—the urban tableau, cultural reportage, and caricature—as new ways of imagining temporal unfolding, recentering periodicals and other serial forms at the heart of nineteenth-century print culture.

Book German Romance Lanzelet

Download or read book German Romance Lanzelet written by Michael Resler and published by DS Brewer. This book was released on 2003 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Text and facing translation of an important medieval German Arthurian romance. Ulrich von Zatzikhoven's Lanzelet, dating from the end of the twelfth century, is a verse translation into Middle High German of what was probably an Anglo-Norman romance, now lost. It presents the story of Lanzelet (Lancelot), but in quite a different version from Chrétien de Troyes' Chevalier de la charrette. The first half of the tale concerns Lanzelet's knightly and romantic exploits on his way to discovering his true identity, while at the same time winning the beautiful Iblis as his wife. The second half revolves around Lanzelet's efforts to defend the honor of the Arthurian court and reestablish his own and his wife's kingdoms. As in much literature of the time, sex, violence and magic abound. This volume presents the first full translation into English, with a new, facing edition of the Middle High German text. It is accompanied by an introduction, variant readings and notes to the translation. Kathleen J. Meyer teaches in the Department of Languages and Ethnic Studies, Bemidji State University.
