Book Elliptic Functions and Elliptic Curves

Download or read book Elliptic Functions and Elliptic Curves written by Patrick Du Val and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1973-08-02 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive treatment of elliptic functions is linked by these notes to a study of their application to elliptic curves. This approach provides geometers with the opportunity to acquaint themselves with aspects of their subject virtually ignored by other texts. The exposition is clear and logically carries themes from earlier through to later topics. This enthusiastic work of scholarship is made complete with the inclusion of some interesting historical details and a very comprehensive bibliography.

Book The International Commission on Mathematical Instruction 1908 2008 People Events and Challenges in Mathematics Education

Download or read book The International Commission on Mathematical Instruction 1908 2008 People Events and Challenges in Mathematics Education written by Fulvia Furinghetti and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-30 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents the history of ICMI trough a prosopographical approach. In other words, it pays a lot of attention to the actors of the International movement. The portraits of the members of the ICMI Central Committees (1908-1936) and ICMI Executive Committees (1952-2008), and other eminent figures in ICMI history, who have passed away in the first 100 years of its life, are the guiding thread of the volume. Each portrait includes: · Biographical information · An outline of the various contributions made by the individual in question to the study of problems pertaining to mathematics teaching/education · Primary bibliography · Secondary with particular attention to the publications concerning the teaching of mathematics · Images: photos, book frontispieces, relevant manuscripts The authors of the portraits (30 altogether) are researchers in the history of mathematics, mathematics, and mathematics education. The focus on the officer’s role within ICMI and on his/her contributions to mathematics education, make the portraits different from usual biographies. In particular, since most officers were active mathematicians, the portraits shed light on aspects of their lesser-known activity. Connecting chapters place the action of these figures in the historical context and in the different phases of ICMI history.

Book Vorlesungen ber die hypergeometrische Funktion

Download or read book Vorlesungen ber die hypergeometrische Funktion written by Felix Klein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Elliptic Modular Functions

Download or read book Elliptic Modular Functions written by B. Schoeneberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a fully detailed introduction to the theory of modular functions of a single variable. I hope that it will fill gaps which in view ofthe lively development ofthis theory have often been an obstacle to the students' progress. The study of the book requires an elementary knowledge of algebra, number theory and topology and a deeper knowledge of the theory of functions. An extensive discussion of the modular group SL(2, Z) is followed by the introduction to the theory of automorphic functions and auto morphic forms of integral dimensions belonging to SL(2,Z). The theory is developed first via the Riemann mapping theorem and then again with the help of Eisenstein series. An investigation of the subgroups of SL(2, Z) and the introduction of automorphic functions and forms belonging to these groups folIows. Special attention is given to the subgroups of finite index in SL (2, Z) and, among these, to the so-called congruence groups. The decisive role in this setting is assumed by the Riemann-Roch theorem. Since its proof may be found in the literature, only the pertinent basic concepts are outlined. For the extension of the theory, special fields of modular functions in particular the transformation fields of order n-are studied. Eisen stein series of higher level are introduced which, in case of the dimension - 2, allow the construction of integrals of the 3 rd kind. The properties of these integrals are discussed at length.

Book Hidden Harmony Geometric Fantasies

Download or read book Hidden Harmony Geometric Fantasies written by Umberto Bottazzini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-21 with total page 860 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a history of complex function theory from its origins to 1914, when the essential features of the modern theory were in place. It is the first history of mathematics devoted to complex function theory, and it draws on a wide range of published and unpublished sources. In addition to an extensive and detailed coverage of the three founders of the subject – Cauchy, Riemann, and Weierstrass – it looks at the contributions of authors from d’Alembert to Hilbert, and Laplace to Weyl. Particular chapters examine the rise and importance of elliptic function theory, differential equations in the complex domain, geometric function theory, and the early years of complex function theory in several variables. Unique emphasis has been devoted to the creation of a textbook tradition in complex analysis by considering some seventy textbooks in nine different languages. The book is not a mere sequence of disembodied results and theories, but offers a comprehensive picture of the broad cultural and social context in which the main actors lived and worked by paying attention to the rise of mathematical schools and of contrasting national traditions. The book is unrivaled for its breadth and depth, both in the core theory and its implications for other fields of mathematics. It documents the motivations for the early ideas and their gradual refinement into a rigorous theory.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Halmos will celebrate his 75th birthday on the 3rd of March 1991. This volume, from colleagues, is an expression of affection for the man and respect for his contributions as scholar, writer, and teacher. It contains articles about Paul, about the times in which he worked and the places he has been, and about mathematics. Paul has furthered his profession in many ways and this collection reflects that diversity. Articles about Paul are not biographical, but rather tell about his ideas, his philosophy, and his style. Articles about the times and places in which Paul has worked describe people, events, and ways in which Paul has influenced students and colleagues over the past 50 years. Articles about mathematics are about all kinds of mathematics, including operator theory and Paul's research in the subject. This volume represents a slice of mathematical life and it shows how many parts of mathematics Paul has touched. It is fitting that this volume has been produced with the support and cooperation of Springer-Verlag. For over 35 years, Paul has contributed to mathematics publishing as founder and editor of many outstanding series.

Book Handbook of Conformal Mapping with Computer Aided Visualization

Download or read book Handbook of Conformal Mapping with Computer Aided Visualization written by Valentin I. Ivanov and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1994-12-16 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a guide on conformal mappings, their applications in physics and technology, and their computer-aided visualization. Conformal mapping (CM) is a classical part of complex analysis having numerous applications to mathematical physics. This modern handbook on CM includes recent results such as the classification of all triangles and quadrangles that can be mapped by elementary functions, mappings realized by elliptic integrals and Jacobian elliptic functions, and mappings of doubly connected domains. This handbook considers a wide array of applications, among which are the construction of a Green function for various boundary-value problems, streaming around airfoils, the impact of a cylinder on the surface of a liquid, and filtration under a dam. With more than 160 domains included in the catalog of mapping, Handbook of Conformal Mapping with Computer-Aided Visualization is more complete and useful than any previous volume covering this important topic. The authors have developed an interactive ready-to-use software program for constructing conformal mappings and visualizing plane harmonic vector fields. The book includes a floppy disk for IBM-compatible computers that contains the CONFORM program.
