Book excerpt: From outlawing bowling in colonial America to regulating violent video games and synthetic drugs today, Mark Stein’s Vice Capades examines the nation’s relationship with the actions, attitudes, and antics that have defined morality. This humorous and quirky history reveals that our views of vice are formed not merely by morals but by power. While laws against nude dancing have become less restrictive, laws restricting sexual harassment have been enacted. While marijuana is no longer illegal everywhere, restrictive laws have been enacted against cigarettes. Stein examines this nation’s inconsistent moral compass and how the powers-that-be in each era determine what is or is not deemed a vice. From the Puritans who founded Massachusetts with unyielding, biblically based laws to those modern purveyors of morality who currently campaign against video game violence, Vice Capades looks at the American history we all know from a fresh and exciting perspective and shows how vice has shaped our nation, sometimes without us even knowing it.

Download or read book Deus in Machina written by Jeremy Stolow and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2012-11-05 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume explore how two domains of human experience and action—religion and technology—are implicated in each other. Contrary to commonsense understandings of both religion (as an “otherworldly” orientation) and technology (as the name for tools, techniques, and expert knowledges oriented to “this” world), the contributors to this volume challenge the grounds on which this division has been erected in the first place. What sorts of things come to light when one allows religion and technology to mingle freely? In an effort to answer that question, Deus in Machina embarks upon an interdisciplinary voyage across diverse traditions and contexts where religion and technology meet: from the design of clocks in medieval Christian Europe, to the healing power of prayer in premodern Buddhist Japan, to 19th-century Spiritualist devices for communicating with the dead, to Islamic debates about kidney dialysis in contemporary Egypt, to the work of disability activists using documentary film to reimagine Jewish kinship, to the representation of Haitian Vodou on the Internet, among other case studies. Combining rich historical and ethnographic detail with extended theoretical reflection, Deus in Machina outlines new directions for the study of religion and/as technology that will resonate across the human sciences, including religious studies, science and technology studies, communication studies, history, anthropology, and philosophy.

Drawing from the expertise of contemporary practitioners, this encyclopedia presents the history, culture, and religion of Haitian Vodou and Mississippi Valley Voodoo. Though based primarily in these two regions, the reference looks at Voodoo across several cultures and delves into related religions, including African Vodu, African Diasporic Religions, and magical practices like hoodoo. Through roughly 150 alphabetical entries, the work describes various aspects of Voodoo in Louisiana and Haiti, covering topics such as important places, traditions, rituals, and items used in ceremonies. • Pages : 274 pages

Download or read book A Brief History of Vice written by Robert Evans and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A celebration of the brave, drunken pioneers who built our civilization one seemingly bad decision at a time, A Brief History of Vice explores a side of the past that mainstream history books prefer to hide. History has never been more fun—or more intoxicating. Guns, germs, and steel might have transformed us from hunter-gatherers into modern man, but booze, sex, trash talk, and tripping built our civilization. Cracked editor Robert Evans brings his signature dogged research and lively insight to uncover the many and magnificent ways vice has influenced history, from the prostitute-turned-empress who scored a major victory for women’s rights to the beer that helped create—and destroy—South America's first empire. And Evans goes deeper than simply writing about ancient debauchery; he recreates some of history's most enjoyable (and most painful) vices and includes guides so you can follow along at home. You’ll learn how to: • Trip like a Greek philosopher. • Rave like your Stone Age ancestors. • Get drunk like a Sumerian. • Smoke a nose pipe like a pre–Columbian Native American. “Mixing science, humor, and grossly irresponsible self-experimentation, Evans paints a vivid picture of how bad habits built the world we know and love.”—David Wong, author of John Dies at the End

Book Voodoo and Christianity

  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2009-05-29
  • ISBN : 1462810020
  • Pages : 121 pages

Download or read book Voodoo and Christianity written by Joseph P. Policape and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-05-29 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tell our stories, my child. It was his mothers last wish. Now, three years after her death, he gathers the stories that changed his life forever. Author Joseph P. Policape introduces us to the man responsible for recording these stories of faiths victory in his new book entitled Voodoo and Christianity: Confrontations between Good and Evil. Marios flooded memories bring him back to the time of distant wounds. He had witnessed the town of Bainet suffering during its most treacherous times. Once, the whole town was slaved by the demonic voodoo spirit until a small band of Protestants started a war against them. His own family had been torn apart by this spiritual war; Marios mother had been a strong believer of Jesus while the father had rejected Christianity, for his voodoo gods. Read and discover the struggle that leads to the victory for the Pentecost faith in Voodoo and Christianity. After reading this book, readers will see how Jesus Christ alone stopped the dominant curse of Satan and his bloody, hopeless helpers in Bainet. Poetry was the river that Mr. Policape dived into to wash off the anger of his soul. It helped him to mock his own madness and was his support when he finally forgave himself and the world around him. His very first published book had the peculiar title, The Birds Love for Poetry and Essays, and came out in 2004. Two years later, in 2006, an intense, creative time, he published two books, A Spiritual Journey and Interpretations of Romance , and now working on two more creations, which hopefully will be out in the fall of 2009. Mr. Joseph P. Policape has received a gold medal from Famous Poet in 2007. He is a distinguished member of the National Poetry.com and Cambridge Whos Who. Mr. Policape received his undergraduate degree in economics at the University of Massachusetts in Boston, and he completed his graduate degree in management information systems at Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. However, during those times, he was reading, writing, singing, and loving poetry. His daytime advocates were rightfully telling him that one poetry was stealing too much of his time from economics and management, but he literally and poetically ignored them!

Book Voodoo the History of a Racial Slur

    Book Details:
  • Author : Associate Professor of Africana Studies Danielle N Boaz
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2023-08-22
  • ISBN : 019768940X
  • Pages : 209 pages

Download or read book Voodoo the History of a Racial Slur written by Associate Professor of Africana Studies Danielle N Boaz and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-08-22 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coined in the middle of the nineteenth century, the term "voodoo" has been deployed largely by people in the U.S. to refer to spiritual practices--real or imagined--among people of African descent. "Voodoo" is one way that white people have invoked their anxieties and stereotypes about Black people--to call them uncivilized, superstitious, hypersexual, violent, and cannibalistic. In this book, Danielle Boaz explores public perceptions of "voodoo" as they have varied over time, with an emphasis on the intricate connection between stereotypes of "voodoo" and debates about race and human rights. The term has its roots in the U.S. Civil War in the 1860s, especially following the Union takeover of New Orleans, when it was used to propagate the idea that Black Americans held certain "superstitions" that allegedly proved that they were unprepared for freedom, the right to vote, and the ability to hold public office. Similar stereotypes were later extended to Cuba and Haiti in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In the 1930s, Black religious movements like the Moorish Science Temple and the Nation of Islam were derided as "voodoo cults." More recently, ideas about "voodoo" have shaped U.S. policies toward Haitian immigrants in the 1980s, and international responses to rituals to bind Nigerian women to human traffickers in the twenty-first century. Drawing on newspapers, travelogues, magazines, legal documents, and books, Boaz shows that the term "voodoo" has often been a tool of racism, colonialism, and oppression.

Book Uncivil War

Download or read book Uncivil War written by Jeremiah Bropleh and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2013-04 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fear struck at my heart when I realized that the rebels' next mission was to round up men and boys. I was included in the roundup! My journey as a child soldier had begun. At thirteen, Jeremiah Bropleh was torn from his family and forced into service in the bloody Liberian Civil War of 1989. Drugged, armed, and brainwashed, Jeremiah's conscience died as he traveled with rebel soldiers, killing, raping, and looting. After one gruesome battle, Jeremiah and his captors returned to the village where he had been kidnapped. Miraculously, Jeremiah's relatives rescued him from the rebels, but he drifted in a shell-shocked fog for weeks. His days as a child soldier were over, but his pursuit of absolution had just begun. The traumas of war left Jeremiah with uncontrollable rage and hatred. Through counseling and Christ's love, he began to heal, but he could not escape the consuming guilt that plagued him. Even after moving to America to attend college, he faced both internal and external struggles, always running from his guilt and often staying only one step ahead of homelessness. In Uncivil War: Recovering from Life as a Child Soldier*, Jeremiah shares his journey from horror to healing, showing that God's love and leading can prevail in even the most heart-breaking circumstances.
