Die kulturelle Entwicklung des Menschen ist durch die Schriftentwicklung revolutioniert worden. Durch diese Technologie wurde die Akkumulation und der Transfer von Wissen auf eine neue Stufe gehoben. Es wurde durch sie möglich, Informationen zu codieren, die codierte Information über lange Zeit und über weite Entfernungen zwischen Sender und Empfänger in ihrer Genauigkeit zu bewahren, so dass der Empfänger sie wieder verlust- und verfälschungsfrei dekodieren konnte. Schriftsysteme sind zu verschiedenen Zeiten an verschiedenen Teilen der Erde entwickelt worden. Vorstufen einer Schrift sind nach Ansicht mancher Wissenschaftler schon 5500 v. Chr. in Südosteuropa entstanden. Allgemein werden jedoch die ägyptischen Hieroglyphen (ca. 3500 v. Chr.) und die sumerische Keilschrift in Mesopotamien (ca. 2700 v. Chr.) als früheste Schriftsysteme betrachtet. Gemäß der These von der Polygenese der Schrift entstanden unabhängig von diesen Schriften weitere Schriftkultu-ren, wobei die indische Indusschrift (2300 v. Chr.), die chinesische Schrift (1900v. Chr.) und die Schrift der Olmeken in Südamerika (1000 v. Chr.) als wichtigste zu nennen sind. Geschrieben wurde (und wird ) in bzw. auf Ton, Stein, Knochen, Papyrus, Ostraka, Pergament, Palmblätter, Leder, Textilien, Wachs, Metall, Stoff und Papier. Es gab verschiedene Schreibtechniken, die wie das Trägermaterial die Form der Zeichen beeinflußte. Es wurde mit Pinseln aus ausgefaserten Enden von Pflanzenstielen geschrieben, es wurde mit spitzen Gegenständen in Ton geritzt oder mit Meißeln in Stein geschlagen. Auch Federkiele dienten als Schreibwerkzeug. Heute liegen die meisten Schriftdokumente gedruckt oder als Datensatz für Computer vor, doch auch die Handschrift wird weiterhin häufig mit Füller und Tinte oder ähnlichem geschrieben. Lange Zeit wurde Schrift nur von sozialen, ökonomischen und politisch-religiösen Eliten benutzt, bis es mit der Erfindung der Typographie zu einer allmählichen Demokratisie-rung des Schreibens kam. In meiner Arbeit möchte ich die wichtigsten und ältesten Schriften des Nahen Ostens, wie die Schriftzeichen der sumerischen Piktographie oder die ägyptische Hieroglyphenschrift, vorstellen, sowie die Entstehung des heute auf aller Welt verbreiteten lateinischen Alphabets nachzeichnen.

It was the first work to systematically develop a theory first suggested by Coelho in the late nineteenth century: that the creation of creole languages somehow reflected universal properties of language. The book also proposed that the same set of properties would be found to emerge in normal first-language acquisition and must have emerged in the original evolution of language. These proposals, some of which were elaborated in an article in Behavioral and Brain Sciences (1984), were immediately controversial and gave rise to a great deal of subsequent research in creoles, much of it aimed at rebutting the theory. The book also served to legitimize and stimulate research in language evolution, a topic regarded as off-limits by linguists for over a century. The present edition contains a foreword by the author bringing the theory up to date; a fuller exposition of many of its aspects can be found in the author's most recent work, More than nature needs (Harvard University Press, 2014).

The final chapter presents a theory of grammaticalization which is based on the autonomy of the linguistic sign with respect to the paradigmatic and syntagmatic axes. This is the basis of the structural parameters that constitute grammaticalization. They are operationalized to the point of rendering degrees of grammaticalization measurable.
