Book excerpt: RUMPALLA, RUMMAGING THROUGH ALBANIA is a newspaperman's book. In it Lucas not only writes about his experiences traveling throughout the then-closed, tightly -controlled Communist country in the late 1980s, but he tells the story through the eyes of a reporter. In 1986 he became the first Americana reporter to be allowed into the country in thirty years. Returning again and again, Lucas chronicled the changes the country went through as it broke away from the hard line Communism of Joseph Stalin to join the rest of the nations of Europe as a fledging democracy. In between, the writer found time to search for the site of a World War II American plane crash, find his father's abandoned village, trace the High Albania footsteps of early English traveler Edith Durham, and help Kosovar refugees during the 1999 NATO bombing of Serbia. In between, searching for the heart of Albania, he got to know and interview Albanian peasants and presidents.

Book The Successor

Download or read book The Successor written by Paddy Manning and published by Black Inc.. This book was released on 2022-11-01 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rupert's stepped down. What now? The first major biography of Lachlan Murdoch, unauthorised and complete. After years of speculation about his succession plans, in 2023 Rupert Murdoch announced his retirement and the appointment of his eldest son, Lachlan, as sole chair of News Corp. The decision confirmed Lachlan's position as one of the world's most powerful people. Yet despite a lifetime in the spotlight, his personality, politics and business acumen remain enigmatic. What can we expect from his leadership of News Corp and Fox, and what will his ascension mean for politics and media around the world? In this riveting biography, acclaimed journalist Paddy Manning explores Lachlan Murdoch's upbringing, political beliefs and his track record as head of Fox Corporation -- the man ultimately responsible for Fox News. Manning follows Lachlan's trajectory from a privileged Manhattan childhood, through his college years at Princeton, his shock decision to walk away from the family business, and his ultimate return as the prodigal son. The portrait that emerges is one of intriguing contradictions. Is Lachlan a risk-loving adventurer or a dutiful son? Ultra-conservative or thoughtful libertarian? Scarred by a series of spectacular business failures, or an underrated leader who has shrewdly repositioned his family's assets? This is a book about the good, the bad and the ugly of the global media, and about America in the age of Trump and Biden. It is a book about power, apprenticeship, politics and succession. 'It's a brave man to take on an autobiography of one of the richest and most powerful men in global media.' --Crikey 'It is hard to think of a better time to write an account of the life and times of Lachlan Murdoch, heir-apparent to the News Corp throne -- or of a better writer to do it. Who Lachlan Murdoch is, how he thinks and what he does with his power is vital to Australian democracy. Paddy Manning has it all covered.' --Monica Attard, author of Russia: Which Way Paradise?

Book Playing by the Rules

Download or read book Playing by the Rules written by John Wilson and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sport, while it has its origins in the love of play and the desire to be entertained and diverted, is a social institution with important political, economic, and social consequences. Playing by the Rules describes how the relation between sport and the state has developed over the last one hundred years, and how, largely by indirection and accident, a public policy with respect to sport has emerged." "Apart from the debate as to whether sport and politics should mix in the first place, John Wilson considers the process whereby sport has become a public policy domain, just like energy, health, transportation and agriculture. He argues that while all modern societies have evolved both sports complexes and extensive states, Americans have developed their own unique kind of relationship. This relationship grants considerable freedom for commercialized sports to develop, at the expense of more state-administered forms. At the same time, this arrangement allows commercialized sports to benefit from state protection and guarantees, all in the interest of the public good - a system that is highly characteristic of public policy in liberal democratic societies, where individual freedom is a paramount value." "Wilson traces the impact of liberal democratic politics through a number of discrete but related fields, from the struggle to secure equality of opportunity for all individuals to participate in sport, to the evolution of contractual freedom for professional athletes and the role played by unions in securing these freedoms. He then examines the impact of state actions, mainly judicial, on the structure of the sports industry, principally the impact of the state on the relation between firms or "franchises" - ability to control players, entry into the league, movement of franchises, and relations with the mass media." "Playing by the Rules also defines the relation between sport and the state more broadly. Assuming that the state is interested in nation-building to legitimate its practices, Wilson explores the role sport has played in this nation-building in the United States, the perceived relation between sport and citizenship, the part sport has been asked to play in the national task of assimilating immigrants, and the efforts the state has made to control and regulate sport in the interest of promoting national and citizenship values." "Beyond that, Wilson addresses the impact on sport of the United States' participation in the emerging global order, the effect on amateur athletics of the state's need to protect national interests and secure defense in the United States, and the extent to which a global order of sport has emerged that now transcends national boundaries and weakens the control of the state over sport."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Xaas Everything as a service The Lean And Agile Approach To Business Growth

Download or read book Xaas Everything as a service The Lean And Agile Approach To Business Growth written by Shantanu Bhattacharya and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2021-10-13 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: XaaS: Everything-as-a-Service: The Lean and Agile Approach to Business Growth takes the reader into the bold new world of pay-per-use for a product or service. From the perspective of the customer, the servitization model yields multiple benefits: the consumer can try out the product/service at a relatively low cost, the risk is mitigated, capital expenses can be converted into operating expenses, it is not needed to forecast how often the product/service is used, and only parts of the product/service needed can be used. Similarly, a provider can benefit by having a larger market coverage, steadier stream of revenues, upgrades as and when needed, sharing of fixed assets across consumers, practicing of value-based pricing, and unbundling or bundling utility for consumers using appropriate pricing techniques. However, this 'nanoization' of products/services is tricky, and has to be designed carefully. This book provides a set of recipes to providers to adopt the XaaS model by changing the provider's mindset: dividing the product/service forces the provider to take a value-driven approach to his product/service, and consequently, eliminate all non-value added activities. The requirements of the XaaS model serve both as an objective to the innovation and internal processes of the provider, and as guide to understanding the customer's needs. The book also covers data acquisition, data analysis and synthesis, and data application needs of the XaaS model, with simple examples and case studies from the business world of firms that achieve these objectives successfully.

Book American Silhouettes

Download or read book American Silhouettes written by Christian Beres Calmejane and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-04-20 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Volume II of two volumes. American Silhouettes is primarily a study in human character in its dealing with the adversity of life. The setting is America during the last quarter of the twentieth century. More specifically it focuses on the struggle of two generations of a small African American family whose destiny encounters more than its share of horrific tribulations. It is a window on life, love, happiness, suffering, and death of the members of this small vulnerable resilient family from the South, that moves to Washington, D.C. for a better life, only to find a very short interlude of happiness, followed by a deep plunge into another cycle of trauma and despair; not death though, that would be too easy; and when death finally does come, it is a liberation of the body and soul. The saga continues with the cycle of misfortune repeating itself in a new age, a new generation with the same finality as if their destiny had been wickedly predefined. From Bridgeville SC to Washington DC, and from Rome to Dakar, their saga brings to light the evil and virtuousness of man in its most natural occurrence, as a part of daily life. The story brings together various individuals of different and sometimes opposite background and describes either the passions of their encounters or the clashes resulting from their conflicts. It analyses the most wonderful passions of love, beauty and happiness, and juxtaposes the horrible ugliness of hate and abuse. It incorporates the duty and responsibility of man within the context of our society and dwells into the aberrations of its marginal sector. It is an interweaved matrix of emotional extremes. It demonstrates that evil has no color, no race, no religion, and that it transcends the social fabric of our society.

Book excerpt: D. E. Gray’s first book “The Warrior In Me” was a collective memoir of his 42 year career in Law enforcement, 28 years with the Los Angeles Police Department and 14 years with the Escondido Police Department in the North San Diego County. Even though author, D. E. Gray ́s new book titled “True to the Blue” is a work of fiction, it is based in part on a true story along with actual events that the author experienced or witnessed while on the job. Many of the characters in this story are patterned after real people who have worked or crossed paths with D. E. Gray during his 42 year career as a street cop. This story begins in early 1999 and follows the hardships of Sergio Ortega; a six-year veteran of the L.A.P.D. who is assigned to the elite C.R.A.S.H. gang unit of the Operations Central Bureau. It follows Ortega’s struggle to be the best at what he does, getting the bad guys off the streets, while staying true to his badge and the blue uniform that he wears and that represents cops in every city. With the infamous L.A.P.D. Rampart scandal about to break open and Chief Bernard Parks ́ hard-line approach with his officer accountability policy, Ortega eventually discovers that being a good cop is more than he had bargained for. When he is faced with protecting the identity of an “ELA Dukes” gang member who has turned confidential informant for an LAPD Hollenbeck division detective, he finds himself in trouble with the department. His hard work and dedication to the job would destroy his marriage and alienate his friends and partners who would abandon him in his time of need. Ortega would have to dig deep into his past to come to grips with his downward spiraling life to try to salvage it from the disaster it had come to be. Given one more chance to prove himself at the San Pasqual Police Department, Ortega would find himself investigating several murders that were made to look like drug overdoses. When his neighbors discover a large drug cache hidden in some Mexican Talavera pots they purchased, Ortega is tasked with finding the drug runner who lost the drugs to incompetence. When the neighbors are later found murdered, Ortega becomes obsessed with finding the killer who he believes may have also had a hand in the string of overdose murders as well as Sergio’s own ex-wife’s murder. Staying “True To The Blue” uniform leads Sergio on a journey that culminates into an unpredictable and shocking outcome.

Book excerpt: A small-town murder leads to international intrigue in this “first-class thriller” from the New York Times–bestselling master of Scandinavian crime (The New York Times Book Review). Inspector Kurt Wallander returns in the second of Henning Mankell’s award-winning, internationally-bestselling detective novels, this time to investigate the execution-style killing of a Swedish housewife. The local police focus on a determined stalker who’s suddenly nowhere to be found, but when they finally catch up with their prime suspect his alibi turns out to be airtight. Digging deeper, Wallander discovers that the woman’s death is more complex and dangerous than a crime of passion. His search for the truth takes him far from home and into the murky world of apartheid-era South Africa, where he uncovers a sinister assassination plot. Soon the small-town detective finds himself in a high-stakes tangle with the South African secret service and a ruthless ex-KGB agent. Combining heart-pounding suspense with probing social commentary, The White Lioness is an essential chapter in the addictive mystery series that inspired the hit TV show Wallander starring Kenneth Branagh. “It is not hard to see why the Wallander books have made such an impact” (The Times Literary Supplement).
