Book The Future of Disability in America

Download or read book The Future of Disability in America written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-10-24 with total page 619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The future of disability in America will depend on how well the U.S. prepares for and manages the demographic, fiscal, and technological developments that will unfold during the next two to three decades. Building upon two prior studies from the Institute of Medicine (the 1991 Institute of Medicine's report Disability in America and the 1997 report Enabling America), The Future of Disability in America examines both progress and concerns about continuing barriers that limit the independence, productivity, and participation in community life of people with disabilities. This book offers a comprehensive look at a wide range of issues, including the prevalence of disability across the lifespan; disability trends the role of assistive technology; barriers posed by health care and other facilities with inaccessible buildings, equipment, and information formats; the needs of young people moving from pediatric to adult health care and of adults experiencing premature aging and secondary health problems; selected issues in health care financing (e.g., risk adjusting payments to health plans, coverage of assistive technology); and the organizing and financing of disability-related research. The Future of Disability in America is an assessment of both principles and scientific evidence for disability policies and services. This book's recommendations propose steps to eliminate barriers and strengthen the evidence base for future public and private actions to reduce the impact of disability on individuals, families, and society.

Book Evaluation of the Specialized Volunteer Transportation Program of the Area IV Agency on Aging and Community Service

Download or read book Evaluation of the Specialized Volunteer Transportation Program of the Area IV Agency on Aging and Community Service written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides an evaluation of a specialized volunteer rural transportation program implemented in April 1986. It was modeled after a successful program operated in the Huntsville, Alabama area. This program is an innovative response to the unique transportation needs of persons living in rural regions of the eight counties comprising Area IV of Indiana. Five rural communities participated in the volunteer systems set up for the program. The evaluation focused on 2 major areas of these systems: the organizational framework of the 5 operating boards, and the performance and impact of the services. Information and results from the first nine months of operation of these demonstrations was gathered and evaluated. The emphasis was to determine how well the systems satisfied the operational objectives of the program, namely: to make affordable, cost effective, flexible, rural, public transportation to residents of the communities willing to share responsibilities for providing the transportation; to reduce federal, state or local government operating subsidies for gasoline and drivers for this program by having each community pay their own fuel use and recruit volunteer drivers for the vans; and to enhance the dignity and sense of ownership of the public transportation user and the community served. In addition, the study examined the potential of such systems vis-a-vis other more widely used systems. The evaluation results show that these systems represent an intriguing means of providing low cost, high quality transportation and appear to be ideally suited for such communities.

Book I Am the Subway

Download or read book I Am the Subway written by Hyo-eun Kim and published by Scribble Us. This book was released on 2021-06 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A cinematic journey through the Seoul subway that masterfully portrays the many unique lives we travel alongside whenever we take the train. A poetic translation of the bestselling Korean picture book. I rattle and clatter over the tracks. Same time, same route, every day. Carrying people from one place to another, I travel over the ground and rumble under, twice across the wide Han River. Around I go, around and around. Crowds of people wait to climb aboard. Accompanied by the constant, rumbling ba-dum ba-dum of its passage through the city, the subway has stories to tell. Between sunrise and sunset, it welcomes and farewells people, and holds them--along with their joys, hopes, fears, and memories--in its embrace.

Book Volunteers in Public Schools

Download or read book Volunteers in Public Schools written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1990-02-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the most prominent of President Bush's "thousand points of light" are volunteers who work with our nation's students. The last several decades show considerable growth in the numbers of school volunteers, with increasing participation by people from the business community, retired citizens, and college students, in addition to the traditionally active mothers of school children. Yet, we must do more to ensure the success of volunteer programs in schools. It is not enough to assume that any volunteer effort will produce results, nor is it wise to use volunteers simply because they are "free." This new volume from the National Research Council provides the first overview ever compiled of volunteer activity in U.S. public schoolsâ€"reporting on how volunteers are being used in schools, what factors make programs successful, what further research will enhance our ability to create good programs, and what directions our national policy should take. Included in this study of volunteers in public schools are the reports of the committee's site visits to 13 volunteer programs identified as "exemplary" from Boston Partners in Education to "Project Rescue" for dropout prevention in Corsicana, Texas. Each site report describes local economic conditions and their effects on education, the organization and size of the school system, and the volunteer programâ€"with details on how each program functions and what results have been achieved. This book will be immediately useful to federal, state, and local policymakers, school boards and administrators, principals and teachers, PTA members, business firms involved with schools, and, of course, managers or coordinators of volunteer activities and concerned volunteers.

Book Introduction to Senior Transportation

Download or read book Introduction to Senior Transportation written by Helen K. Kerschner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Senior Transportation focuses on an issue that is a growing concern—the community mobility needs of older adults. Surpassing the coverage available in existing gerontology textbooks, it enables the reader to understand and appreciate the challenges faced by older adults as they make the transition from driving to using transportation options (many of which were not designed to meet their particular needs). It considers the physical and cognitive limitations of older adult passengers, the family of transportation services, the challenges providers face in meeting the assistance and support needs of senior passengers, and the transportation methods that do and do not currently meet the needs and wants of senior passengers. This textbook addresses the educational and professional development needs of faculty, students, and practitioners working in the fields of aging, aging services, and transportation. The book has been class-tested and features innovative, practical learning tools that appeal to students and practitioners. It complements any introductory course in gerontology, human development and aging, or human factors, and will enhance the curriculum of programs in the social behavioral sciences as well as traffic safety, transit engineering, and community planning.
