Book excerpt: Navier-Stokes equations are so complex that their use by engineers was impractical until the advent of the modern computer but a new problem was created: Data saturation. The solution to the Navier-Stokes equations is comprised of thousands of numbers which makes it virtually impossible to conceptualize the situation within the flow field. To alleviate this problem, various computer graphics techniques have been used to provide images of flow fields. This thesis applies a relatively new graphics technique known as volumetric rendering to generate three-dimensional images of aerodynamic flow fields. Advantage of this technique are that it doesn't rely on geometric primitives to approximate a surface; and no a priori knowledge of the flow field's form is required to produce the final flow visualization image. To assess the utility of volumetric rendering in the field of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), a program known as VIPER is developed. This thesis outlines the requirements and specific algorithms for this program. Images of flow fields are presented and discussed along with program enhancements. VIPER's design also permits its use in applications other than CFD. (edc).

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Oata Analysis and Synthesis (CINOAS) * at Purdue. University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 33 (thesis year 1988) a total of 13,273 theses titles from 23 Canadian and 1 85 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 33 reports theses submitted in 1988, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Advanced Volume Rendering

Download or read book Advanced Volume Rendering written by Caixia Zhang and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Although many advances have been achieved within the visualization community in the last decade, many challenging problems are still open in volume rendering. In this dissertation, we mainly study three challenging topics in advanced volume rendering on shadows, flows, and high-dimensional rendering. Shadows are essential to realistic and informative scenes. In volume rendering, the shadow calculation is difficult because the light intensity is attenuated as the light traverses the volume. We investigate a new shadow algorithm that properly determines the light attenuation and generates more accurate volumetric shadows with low storage requirements by using 2D shadow buffers. We have extended our shadow algorithm to deal with extended light sources and generate volumetric soft shadows with an analytic method and using a convolution technique. This shadow and soft shadow algorithm also has been applied to mixed scenes of volumetric and polygonal objects. Multiple light scattering is also modeled in our volumetric lighting model. Interval volume algorithm is a region-of-interest extraction algorithm for steady and time-varying three-dimensional structured and unstructured grids. We present several new rendering operations to provide effective visualizations of the 3D scalar field. This technique has been extended to four dimensions to extract time-varying interval volumes. The time-varying interval volumes are rendered directly, from 4-simplices to image space. We propose a high-dimensional rendering algorithm and solve this technical challenge. In this way, we can visualize the integrated interval volumes across time steps and see how interval volumes change over time in a single view. Three-dimensional flow visualization is a challenging topic. We propose an implicit flow field method to visualize 3D flow fields. An implicit flow field is first extracted using an advection operator on the flow, with a set of flow-related attributes stored. Two techniques are then employed to render the implicit flow field: an interval volume approach and a slice-based three-dimensional texture mapping approach. With these two techniques, we achieve the user-controlled representation and appearance of flow volumes, and display flow details interactively.

Book Parallel Visualization of Large Scale Aerodynamics Calculations A Case Study on the Cray T3E

Download or read book Parallel Visualization of Large Scale Aerodynamics Calculations A Case Study on the Cray T3E written by Kwan-Liu Ma and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "This paper reports the performance of a parallel volume rendering algorithm for visualizing a large-scale unstructured-grid dataset produced by a three-dimensional aerodynamics simulation. This dataset, containing over 18 million tetrahedra, allows us to extend our performance results to a problem which is more than 30 times larger than the one we examined previously. This high resolution dataset also allows us to see fine, three-dimensional features in the flow field. All our tests were performed on the SGI/Cray T3E operated by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. Using 511 processors, a rendering rate of almost 9 million tetrahedra/second was achieved with a parallel overhead of 26%."

Book Parallel Volume Rendering Algorithms for Computational Flow Imaging

Download or read book Parallel Volume Rendering Algorithms for Computational Flow Imaging written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational flow imaging (CFI) uses theoretical predictions of the interaction and transmission of optical waves through theoretical flowfield to generate digital pictures that simulate real observations, but visualizing three-dimensional unstructured data from aerodynamics calculations is challenging because the associated meshes are typically larger in size and irregular in both shape and resolution. The goal of this research is to develop a fast, efficient parallel volume rendering algorithm of computational flow imaging (corresponding to shadowgraph, schlieren and interferometer) tor parallel distributed-memory supercomputers consisting of a large number of powerful processors. We use a preprocessing procedure that the whole flow field is divided into new regular regions in which the vowels are distributed by x and y coordinates so that the ray-casting and field reconstructing can provide maximum flexibility in the data distribution and rendering steps.

Book Flow Visualization Techniques for CDF Using Volume Rendering

Download or read book Flow Visualization Techniques for CDF Using Volume Rendering written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As simulations have migrated towards three-dimensions, new tools for examining the resulting complex datasets have been required. Much progress has been achieved in the area of scientific visualization towards this goal. However, most of the research has focused on the representation and understanding of a single scalar field. Some nice results have been achieved for vector or flow fields. This paper reviews several of these techniques, organizes them by their approach and complexity and presents some observations on their benefits and limitations. Several example images are used to highlight the character of these techniques.
