Book Behavioral Science Policy Volume 7 Issue 2

Download or read book Behavioral Science Policy Volume 7 Issue 2 written by Craig R. Fox and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2022-03-29 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The success of nearly all public- and private-sector policies hinges on the behavior of individuals, groups, and organizations. Today, such behaviors are better understood than ever, thanks to a growing body of practical behavioral science research. However, policymakers often are unaware of behavioral science findings that may help them craft and execute more effective and efficient policies. The pages of this journal will become a meeting ground: a place where scientists and non-scientists can encounter clearly described behavioral research that can be put into action. By design, the scope of Behavioral Science & Policy is broad, with topics spanning health care, financial decisionmaking, energy and the environment, education and culture, justice and ethics, and work place practices. Contributions will be made by researchers with expertise in psychology, sociology, law, behavioral economics, organization science, decision science, and marketing. The journal is a key offering of the Behavioral Science & Policy Association in partnership with the Brookings Institution. The mission of BSPA is to foster dialog between social scientists, policymakers, and other practitioners in order to promote the application of rigorous empirical behavioral science in ways that serve the public interest. BSPA does not advance a particular agenda or political perspective.

Book Biologising the Social Sciences

Download or read book Biologising the Social Sciences written by David Canter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-20 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You can hardly open a paper or read an academic journal without some attempt to explain an aspect of human behaviour or experience by reference to neuroscience, biological or evolutionary processes. This ‘biologising’ has had rather a free ride until now, being generally accepted by the public at large. However, there is a growing number of scholars who are challenging the assumption that we are little more than our bodies and animal origins. This volume brings together a review of these emerging critiques expressed by an international range of senior academics from across the social sciences. Their arguments are firmly based in the empirical, scientific tradition. They show the lack of logic or evidence for many ‘biologising’ claims, as well as the damaging effects these biological assumptions can have on issues such as dealing with dyslexia or treating alcoholism. This important book, originally published as a special issue of Contemporary Social Science, contributes to a crucial debate on what it means to be human. "This collection of articles by David Canter and his colleagues, rigorously argued and richly informative [...] are of immense importance. It is astonishing that, as Canter puts it in his brilliant overview of biologising trends [...] there are those in the humanities who need to be reminded "that human beings can talk and interact with each other, generating cultures and societies that have an existence that cannot be reduced to their mere mechanical parts". Professor Raymond Tallis FRCP FMedSci DLitt LittD in the Preface.

Book Broadening the Base of Addiction Mutual Support Groups

Download or read book Broadening the Base of Addiction Mutual Support Groups written by Jeffrey D. Roth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mutual-help groups have proliferated, diversified and adapted to emerging substance-related trends over the past 75 years, and have been the focus of rigorous research for the past 30 years. This book reviews the history of mutual support groups for addiction that have arisen as adjuncts or alternatives to Twelve Step Programs, including secular mutual support groups like Secular Organization for Sobriety, Smart Recovery and Women for Sobriety, and faith-based mutual support groups like Celebrate Recovery. It also considers the mutual support groups attended by families and friends of addicts. These mutual support groups are examined in terms of their histories, theoretical underpinnings and intended communities. The structures common in mutual support groups have influenced the rise of a new recovery advocacy movement and new recovery community institutions such as recovery ministries, recovery community centers, sober cafes, sober sports clubs, and recovery-focused projects in music, theatre and the arts. This volume explores how collectively, these trends reflect the cultural and political awakening of people in recovery and growing recognition and celebration of multiple pathways of long-term addiction recovery. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Groups in Addiction and Recovery.

Book Global Ethics on Climate Change

Download or read book Global Ethics on Climate Change written by Martin Schonfeld and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volatility of climate change is increasing. It is bad news, and many climatologists, policy analysts and environmental groups regard the West as the largest contributor to the problems caused by climate change. This book raises questions concerning the systemic and cultural reasons for Western countries’ unwillingness to bear full responsibility for their carbon emissions. Is the Western paradigm failing? Can other cultures offer solutions? Are there alternatives for designing a better future? Just as the roots of the problem of climate change are cultural, the solution must be too. The contributors to Global Ethics on Climate Change explore cultural alternatives. This differs from conventional climate ethics, which tends to address the crisis with utilitarian, legalistic, and analytic tools. The authors in this volume doubt whether such paradigm patches will work. It may be time to think outside the box and consider non-Western insights about the good life, indigenous wisdom on being-in-the-world, and new ideas for civil evolution. This book is an examination of candidates for a Plan B. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Global Ethics.

Book Cross continental Views on Journalistic Skills

Download or read book Cross continental Views on Journalistic Skills written by Leen d'Haenens and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-09-04 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers the role journalism education plays in coping with a changing media landscape. It looks at how journalists can empower themselves in an effort to excel in an evolving environment and considers whether it suffices for them to master ‘pre-millennial’ basic skills or whether brand new competencies need to be incorporated. Few dramatic qualifications are spared when discussing the changes that have shaken the news environment during the noughties. Digitization has both empowered and tried professional journalists through multimedia news production, media convergence and not least a maturing commercial internet. Moreover, digitization has also influenced, and been influenced by, other societal changes such as global financial tensions, evolving multicultural societies, and emerging democracies in search for a suitable journalistic paradigm. Indeed, the rather technological evolutions emphasized time and again, cannot be detached from a cultural setting. This is why an investigation in required competencies benefits from an explicit socio-cultural and cross-continental perspective. As this book tackles a varied set of ‘news ecosystems’, it is our hope to offer a nuanced view on what indeed seems to be a global fluidity in journalism practice. Explicit emphasis is put on the role of journalism education as facilitator for, and even innovator in, required journalistic competencies. Time will tell whether or not ‘news ecosystems’ will again stabilize. This volume makes a number of concrete recommendations towards journalism training and discusses a number of case studies across several continents, illustrating how goals are attuned to a changed news environment. As this book links academic paradigms to concrete journalism practice and education, its reading is recommended both for practitioners and educators. This book was originally published as a special issue of Journalism Practice.

Book Framing Global Health Governance

Download or read book Framing Global Health Governance written by Colin Mcinnes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-01-08 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalisation is influencing not only patterns of health and disease worldwide, but how decisions on health are made and organised. This is the arena of ‘Global Health Governance’. Despite some successes in developing better global governance for health, progress overall has been disappointingly slow. This is especially so given the number of health crises today, some of which are long standing but others relatively new. This book explores how progress has often been limited, but also on occasion assisted, by the role of ideas. It identifies how health issues, such as HIV/AIDS, pandemic influenza and tobacco control, are framed in such a way as to resonate with a set of ideas, or worldviews, associated with particular policy communities. A successful framing can generate possibilities for action, but can also lead to competition when ideas conflict or suggest different pathways of response. Global Health Governance therefore is an arena of competition as well as cooperation, where ideas matter as well as resources and political will. This book was originally published as a special issue of Global Public Health.

Book The New Dynamics of Identity Politics in the Americas

Download or read book The New Dynamics of Identity Politics in the Americas written by Olaf Kaltmeier and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiculturalism has shaped identity politics in the Americas over the past decades, as illustrated by politics of recognition, affirmative action, and increasing numbers of internationally recognized cultural productions by members of ethnic minorities. Hinting at postcolonial legacies in political rhetoric and practice multiculturalism has also served as a driving force behind social movements in the Americas. Nevertheless, in current academic discussions and public debates on migration, globalization and identity politics, concepts like new ethnicities, ethnic groupism, creolization, hybridity, mestizaje, diasporas, and "post-ethnicity" articulate positionings that are profoundly changing our understanding of "multiculturalism." Combining theoretical reflections with case studies the aim of this book is to demonstrate the current dynamics of (post-) multicultural politics in the Americas. This book was based on a special issue of Latin American and Caribbean Ethnic Studies.

Book Visual Environmental Communication

Download or read book Visual Environmental Communication written by Anders Hansen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-17 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2008, the editors published a well-cited journal paper arguing that while scholarly work on media representations of environmental issues had made substantial progress in textual analysis there had been much less work on visual representations. This is surprising given the increasingly visual nature of media and communication, and in light of emerging evidence that the environment is visualized through the use of increasingly symbolic and iconic images. Addressing these matters, this volume marks out the present state of the field and contains chapters that represent fresh and exciting high quality scholarly work now emerging on visual environmental communication. These include a range of fascinating and often alarming topics which draw on a variety of methods and forms of visual communication. The book demonstrates that research needs to think much more widely about what we mean by the ‘visual’ which plays a massive yet under-researched role in the politics and ideology of public understanding and misunderstanding of and the environment and environmental problems. The book is of relevance to students and researchers in media and communication studies, cultural studies, film and visual studies, geography, sociology, politics and other disciplines with an interest in the politics of visual environmental communication. This book was published as a special issue of Environmental Communication: A Journal of Nature and Culture.

Book Political Culture Soft Interventions and Nation Building

Download or read book Political Culture Soft Interventions and Nation Building written by Tiffany Jenkins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-01-13 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book raises questions about cultural interventions, an area of investigation somewhat overlooked in place of developing a critique of political interventions. Whilst political interventions are more explicit, coercive, and have a wide-reaching impact, it is important also to examine the way culture is used in attempts to reconstruct society and peoples - the ‘soft’ side of statebuilding, where heritage is utilised to play a role in the construction of the nation and the people, in memory and identity. For it can play a role in legitimizing myths and identifying symbolic, historic events, and implicitly informs the construction of infrastructure, institutions, and other aspects of civic life. Contributors from the fields of politics, anthropology, archaeology, and sociology examine interventions in state and nation building through cultural methods, the ‘soft’ side of statebuilding, including the preservation and promotion of certain heritage, the politics of remembrance and monument building, and the repatriation of human remains and artefacts to communities in the name of making reparations for past atrocities. These are timely contributions. Heritage and cultural is too often considered in terms of how tourism might contribute to the economy post-conflict, neglecting the construction of meaning and memory through decisions about is what is preserved or not. It will be of special interest to those in the field of cultural studies, archaeology, and politics as well as international relations. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Intervention and Statebuilding.

Book Ethnographies of Science Education

Download or read book Ethnographies of Science Education written by Carol Brandt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-09-25 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers who conduct ethnography in science education tend to have a deep commitment for transforming science to improve the lives of people in underserved communities. This edited volume explores how contemporary ethnographers in science education bring to light the local production of scientific knowledge and the ways it is implicated in larger social and political struggles. Ethnographies in science education contribute to understanding the experiences of linguistically, racially, and economically diverse populations who have been historically excluded from participation in science. An anthropological approach has also been instrumental in explicating the situated practices by which students enact science in the classroom and in their lives beyond schools. This edited volume brings together ethnographers in science education to contribute a global perspective on science teaching and learning in school and university classrooms, at home, and after school programs. Included are examples of ethnography in science education from the UK, Argentina, Canada, and the USA in which contributors point to promising directions for theorizing the ‘culture’ of science education as we undertake educational reform. The authors in this volume argue that ethnography is not only a valid approach for the study of science education, but also they contend that it is essential to the development of more equitable practices for instruction and learning. This book was originally published as a special issue of Ethnography and Education.
