Book Voltage Stability Assessment of Large Power Systems and Identification of Weekest Buses

Download or read book Voltage Stability Assessment of Large Power Systems and Identification of Weekest Buses written by Ramesh Narayanaswami and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses the voltage stability analysis of large power systems using a modal analysis technique. Voltage instability within a power system has a severe consequences including wide spread low voltage profile and system blackout. The development and use of accurate methods to predict incipient voltage instability is crucial in preventing such voltage collapse situations. Voltage collapse may cause the outage in the entire power system. A modal analysis technique computes using steady state system model, a specified no. of smallest Eigen values and the associated Eigen vectors of reduced Jacobian matrix. The Eigen value provides relative measure of proximity to voltage instability. The Eigen vectors each of which is associated with a mode of voltage / reactive power are used to describe the mode shape and to provide information about the network elements and generators which participate in each mode. Using the bus participation factors, the weak load buses are identified. Real time prediction of voltage stability is applied in IEEE 30 bus system, the modal analysis technique was shown to provide an accurate estimate of the system's proximity to voltage stability limit and consistently and correctly predict the critical buses and weakest branches in the transmission system.

Book Stability Analysis of Large Electric Power Systems

Download or read book Stability Analysis of Large Electric Power Systems written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern electric power systems are large and complicated, and, in many regions of the world, the generation and transmission systems are operating near their limits. Ensuring the reliable operation of the power system requires engineers to study the response of the system to various disturbances. The responses to large disturbances are examined by numerically solving the nonlinear differential-algebraic equations describing the power system. The response to small disturbances is typically studied via eigenanalysis. The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) recently developed the Extended Transient/Mid-term Stability Program (ETMSP) to study large disturbance stability and the Small Signal Stability Program Package (SSSP) to study small signal stability. The primary objectives of the work described in this report were to (1) explore ways of speeding up ETMSP, especially on mid-term voltage stability problems, (2) explore ways of speeding up the Multi-Area Small-Signal Stability program (MASS), one of the codes in SSSP, and (3) explore ways of increasing the size of problem that can be solved by the Cray version of MASS.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the fully revised and updated second edition of Power System Dynamics and Stability published in 1997. The modified title Power System Dynamics: Stability and Control reflects a slight shift in focus from solely describing power system dynamics to the means of dealing with them. The book has been expanded by about a third to include: a new chapter on wind power generation; a new section on wide-area measurement systems (WAMS) and their application for real-time control; an overview of lessons learned from wide-spread blackouts affecting North America and Europe in 2003, 2004 and 2006; enhanced treatment of voltage stability and control, and frequency stability and control; application of Lyapunov direct method to analyse and enhance stability of multi-machine power systems ; expanded coverage of steady-state stability using eigenvalue analysis, including modal analysis of dynamic equivalents. The book continues the successful approach of the first edition by progressing from simplicity to complexity. It places the emphasis first on understanding the underlying physical principles before proceeding to more complex models and algorithms. The reader will appreciate the authors’ accessible approach as the book is illustrated by over 400 diagrams and a large number of examples. Power System Dynamics: Stability and Control, Second Edition is an essential resource for graduates of electrical engineering. It is also a clear and comprehensive reference text for undergraduate students, and for practising engineers and researchers who are working in electricity companies or in the development of power system technologies.

Book Modelling Control and Stability Analysis of Photovoltaic Systems in Power System Dynamic Studies

Download or read book Modelling Control and Stability Analysis of Photovoltaic Systems in Power System Dynamic Studies written by Gustav Lammert and published by kassel university press GmbH. This book was released on 2019 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis investigates the impact of: i) the low voltage ride-through and dynamic voltage support capability; ii) the active current recovery rate; iii) the local voltage control; and iv) the plant-level voltage control of large-scale photovoltaic systems on short-term voltage stability and fault-induced delayed voltage recovery as well as transient and frequency stability. The power system dynamic performance is analysed using state-of-the-art methods, such as phasor mode time-domain simulations and the calculation of the critical clearing time that determines the stability margin. Moreover, the recently developed Kullback-Leibler divergence measure is applied to assess the quality of the voltage recovery. Drawbacks of this metric are outlined and a novel metric, the so-called voltage recovery index, is defined that quantifies the delayed voltage recovery more systematically. The studies are performed with a generic photovoltaic system model and typical model parameters are used that were determined in collaboration with a manufacturer. The stability analysis is performed in DIgSILENT PowerFactory using: i) a one-load infinite-bus system; and ii) an IEEE multi-machine voltage stability test system, namely the Nordic test system. The results show that with the adequate control of photovoltaic systems, power system dynamic performance can be significantly improved.
