Book My Complicated Yet Wonderful Life

Download or read book My Complicated Yet Wonderful Life written by Terri Spitzer and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2023-06-26 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story about a young girl who was born in 1962 and grew up in a small suburb in Denver, Colorado. She had an older brother and sister and a younger sister. She differed from her siblings in that as a child, she had endless amounts of energy and enthusiasm and wanted to learn and do as much as she could academically and athletically. She was a quick learner and always had high expectations for herself, not to be a show-off but to prove to herself that she could do it. She preferred to play sports with her brother, who was six years older than her, and he was not afraid to show her some of the hard knocks of playing football or baseball. She was willing to take whatever it took to be able to play. When she was four years old, her mother had taken her grandmother to visit a friend. While they waited, her mother taught her to memorize the Pledge of Allegiance. She loved to learn and could not wait to go to school. In elementary school, she had a wonderful first-grade teacher who taught her and other children reading skills that allowed them to read at higher levels. By second grade, they were all reading at the seventh-grade level. As she went through elementary school, she would be studying in all subjects the higher level of courses. As she entered junior high school, she knew that the classes would be more difficult and that there would be a lot more homework. She was able to keep up with the work, and in the fall, she signed up for the basketball team. She loved playing at a higher level and meeting some new friends. By Christmastime, she began to have less energy and noticed that she was a little more tired than usual. As spring approached, she signed up for the track team. She was never much of a runner, but she thought it would help her get in shape. Over spring break, she would try and practice running 100-yard dashes and would notice how difficult it was and how tired it would make her. She participated in most of the track meets and, toward the end of April, started developing an open sore on her right forearm. Early in May, her fatigue was getting worse. The sore on her arm was not healing, and she began running a fever. She would miss over two weeks of school, and one day, her fever went up to 105 degrees, and they took her to the doctor, who gave her a shot of penicillin. It slowly brought the temperature down to 101-102. The sore on her arm continued to get worse, and her level of endurance kept going down. On Friday, her mom had her go back to school, even though her temperature was still 101 degrees, and she wrapped her arm up. Her mom, who worked for a doctor, picked her up from school and took her to have blood drawn. She would go to work with her mom on Monday, and he would have the results of the blood work and examine her. She had no idea about what she was about to find out or what would lie ahead of her.

Book Thin Description

    Book Details:
  • Author : John L. Jackson Jr.
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2013-11-04
  • ISBN : 0674726251

Download or read book Thin Description written by John L. Jackson Jr. and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-04 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The African Hebrew Israelites of Jerusalem are often dismissed as a fringe cult for their beliefs that African Americans are descendants of the ancient Israelites and that veganism leads to immortality. But John L. Jackson questions what "fringe" means in a world where cultural practices of every stripe circulate freely on the Internet. In this poignant and sophisticated examination of the limits of ethnography, the reader is invited into the visionary, sometimes vexing world of the AHIJ. Jackson challenges what Clifford Geertz called the "thick description" of anthropological research through a multidisciplinary investigation of how the AHIJ use media and technology to define their public image in the twenty-first century. Moving beyond the "modest witness" of nineteenth-century scientific discourse or the "thick descriptions" of twentieth-century anthropology, Jackson insists that Geertzian thickness is impossible, especially in a world where the anthropologist's subjects craft their own self-ethnographies and critically consume the ethnographer's offerings. Taking as its topic a group situated along the fault lines of several diasporas--African, American, Jewish--Thin Description provides an account of how race, religion, and ethnographic representation must be understood anew in the twenty-first century, lest we reenact old mistakes in the study of black humanity.

Book Big Girl in the Middle

Download or read book Big Girl in the Middle written by Gabrielle Reece and published by Three Rivers Press. This book was released on 1998-06-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new superstars in sports are women, and pro beach volleyball player Gabrielle Reece is the hottest of them all. At six-foot-three, 170 pounds, Gabby Reece is at once beautiful and brutish, feminine and rowdy, accessible and intimidating--a woman who is exploding female stereotypes and redefining our image of the female athlete. "A young girl doesn't get many chances to exercise the character muscle via sports, whereas for young boys, it's part of their everyday lives. For girls, it's especially good for them to be forced to work as a team with other girls, to work together under every possible condition--winning, losing, tired, grumpy, happy. It forces them to deal with unpleasant, ungracious emotions and get over it. It forces girls to rely on each other. It gives them confidence in other girls, which ultimately gives them confidence in themselves." "Everything a woman does has an emotional component. Paying attention to my emotional side without surrendering to it is one of the toughest parts of playing professional sports." "I don't like this 'Fear of Being Big' thing because it feeds into the general female thing of wanting to be less--less powerful, less assertive, less demanding, less opinionated, less present, less big." From the Trade Paperback edition.

Book Salt in My Soul

Download or read book Salt in My Soul written by Mallory Smith and published by Random House. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The diaries of a remarkable young woman who was determined to live a meaningful and happy life despite her struggle with cystic fibrosis and a rare superbug—from age fifteen to her death at the age of twenty-five—the inspiration for the original streaming documentary Salt in My Soul “An exquisitely nuanced chronicle of a terrified but hopeful young woman whose life was beginning and ending, all at once.”—Los Angeles Times Diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at the age of three, Mallory Smith grew up to be a determined, talented young woman who inspired others even as she privately raged against her illness. Despite the daily challenges of endless medical treatments and a deep understanding that she’d never lead a normal life, Mallory was determined to “Live Happy,” a mantra she followed until her death. Mallory worked hard to make the most out of the limited time she had, graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University, becoming a cystic fibrosis advocate well known in the CF community, and embarking on a career as a professional writer. Along the way, she cultivated countless intimate friendships and ultimately found love. For more than ten years, Mallory recorded her thoughts and observations about struggles and feelings too personal to share during her life, leaving instructions for her mother to publish her work posthumously. She hoped that her writing would offer insight to those living with, or loving someone with, chronic illness. What emerges is a powerful and inspiring portrait of a brave young woman and blossoming writer who did not allow herself to be defined by disease. Her words offer comfort and hope to readers, even as she herself was facing death. Salt in My Soul is a beautifully crafted, intimate, and poignant tribute to a short life well lived—and a call for all of us to embrace our own lives as fully as possible.

Download or read book Memories of Jewish Life written by Augusto Segre and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this lyrical memoir, translated for the first time into English, noted Jewish historian, author, translator, and activist Augusto Segre not only recounts his rich life experiences but also evokes the changing world of Italian Jewry in the twentieth century. Raised in the traditional Jewish community of Casale Monferrato in the former ghetto, Segre depicts the changes wrought on his people by emancipation, fascism, world wars, and the Holocaust. Segre was a vocal opponent of Italian fascism and a combatant in Italy s partisan war against the Nazis. With the help of Italian peasants, he and his family spent eighteen months evading German and Italian fascist soldiers during the German occupation of Italy. Segre also was an ardent Zionist who helped refugees escape to Israel and ultimately immigrated himself in 1979. He spent three months in Israel in 1948, chronicling Israel s War of Independence. With an ethnographic eye, Segre interweaves his own memories with those of his rabbi father and uses newspapers, public documents, and letters to reveal the shared emotions and moods of a people and the impact the greatest events in European and Jewish history had on them all. The trend of Italian Jews toward assimilation was evident in Segre s time, and an awareness of it pervades this work. Memories of Jewish Life provides a rare glimpse into a traditional, religious and vibrant working-class Jewish community that no longer exists.
