Book Vesuvius Campi Flegrei and Campanian Volcanism

Download or read book Vesuvius Campi Flegrei and Campanian Volcanism written by Benedetto De Vivo and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2019-10-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vesuvius, Campi Flegrei, and Campanian Volcanism communicates the state-of-the-art scientific knowledge on past and active volcanism in an area characterized by elevated risk due to high-density population. Eruptions, lahars and poisonous gas clouds have killed many thousands of people over recorded history, but volcanoes have given people some of the most fertile soil known in agriculture. The research presented in this book is useful for policymakers and researchers from these and other countries who are looking for risk assessment and volcanic evolution models they can apply to similar situations around the world. Naples and its surrounding area, in particular, the area situated between Vesuvius and the Campi Flegrei volcanic area has a population in excess of 4 million people. The volcanic areas that have similarly large populations in proximity to dormant, but hazardous volcanoes, i.e., Indonesia and Central America can also benefit from this work.

Book The Aeolian Islands Volcanoes

Download or read book The Aeolian Islands Volcanoes written by F. Lucchi and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Aeolian Islands form one of the most active geological structures in the Mediterranean area, comprising a number of active (Stromboli and Vulcano) and dormant (Panarea and Lipari) volcanoes. They have attracted the attention of scientists in modern and historical times and are the cradle of the scientific discipline of volcanology. This Memoir provides information on geological features of the Aeolian Islands volcanoes at a regional scale and for each island. The stratigraphy, structural evolution, eruptive and magmatic history of the Islands is presented, along with the geodynamic setting of the Aeolian volcanism and implications for magma origin and evolution processes. Particular focus is given to the active and dormant volcanoes and the related natural hazards. It includes a DVD with new 1:10,000-scale geological maps of the Aeolian Islands and bathymetric maps of sectors of the Aeolian archipelago, together with an extended dataset of rock compositions.

Book Plio Quaternary Volcanism in Italy

Download or read book Plio Quaternary Volcanism in Italy written by Angelo Peccerillo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-12 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Central-Southern Italy and the Tyrrhenian Sea are the sites of extensive Plio-Quaternary magmatic activity. The rock compositions include crustal anatectic granites and rhyolites, tholeiitic, calc-alkaline, shoshonitic volcanics, and potassic to ultrapotassic and Na-alkaline volcanics. This very wide compositional variation makes Italian magmatism one of the most complex petrological issues, the understanding of which is a challenge for modern petrology and geochemistry. This book summarises the petrological, geochemical and volcanological characteristics of Italian Plio-Quaternary volcanism, and discusses petrogenetic hypotheses and possible geodynamics settings. The book is written for petrologists and geochemists, but fundamental geochemical information is well presented and the use of excessive jargon is avoided, making the book readable to a wide audience of Earth scientists.

Download or read book Neapolitan Volcanoes written by Stefano Carlino and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-02 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book serves as a guide to discovering the most interesting volcano sites in Italy. Accompanied by some extraordinary contemporary images of active Neapolitan volcanoes, it explains the main volcanic processes that have been shaping the landscape of the Campania region and influencing human settlements in this area since Greek and Roman times and that have prompted leading international scientists to visit and study this natural volcanology laboratory. While volcanology is the central topic, the book also addresses other aspects related to the area’s volcanism and is divided into three sections: 1) Neapolitan volcanic activity and processes (with a general introduction to volcanology and its development around Naples together with descriptions of the landscape and the main sites worth visiting); 2) Volcanoes and their interactions with local human settlements since the Bronze Age, recent population growth and the transformation of the territory; 3) The risks posed by Neapolitan Volcanoes, their recent activity and the problem of forecasting any future eruption.

Book Bibliography of the Geology and Eruptive Phenomena of the More Important Volcanoes of Southern Italy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Bibliography of the Geology and Eruptive Phenomena of the More Important Volcanoes of Southern Italy Classic Reprint written by Henry James Johnston-Lavis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bibliography of the Geology and Eruptive Phenomena of the More Important Volcanoes of Southern Italy By the time that the Geologists' Association paid its visit to Southern Italy in the months of September and October, 1889, the bibliography had grown to almost twice the size, and Lavis happily seized upon the occasion to publish it in 1891 as an appendix to the account of the excursion, which was reprinted from the Proceedings of the Association. The whole thus formed a valuable manual of information on the Volcanoes of Southern Italy. From that time onwards no opportunity was lost for working at this bibliography and endeavouring to render it as complete as such a work can ever be. When the war broke out, depriving him at once of his practice, he had determined to employ his enforced leisure from professional duties till happier times should return in systematically revising and augmenting the whole bibliography and in ransacking every available source with this object in view. His tragic death cut this project short, and all the loving labour of years of patient research seemed likely to be thrown away had not his family most felicitously conceived the idea of completing the work so far as might be possible and publishing it as a worthy offering to his memory. Download or read book The Geotraveller written by Roger N. Scoon and published by Springer. This book was released on 2021-01-11 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes famous geosites and historical localities in national parks and conservation areas from North America, East Africa, and Europe. The geosites include iconic landforms associated with active volcanoes, canyons, glaciated landscapes, natural rock monoliths, and rifts. The potential for geotourism in historical localities such as the famous Greco-Roman antiquities of Greece, Italy, and Turkey, is emphasised. Some of the geosites and historical localities provide evidence that previous civilizations coped with active geology and major climatic cycles, whilst others reveal evidence of famous geological events recognized in history and ancient mythology that helped shape our current civilization. The book assists tour guides and visitors (both geologists and non-specialists) interested in geotourism by providing an understanding of geological processes in the national parks and historical locations with the assistance of photographs and simplified geological maps.
