Book Volatilization Technologies for Removing Organics from Water

Download or read book Volatilization Technologies for Removing Organics from Water written by Jeffrey L. Fleming and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "From the Introduction: " The purpose of this guide is to aid in determining whether a particular volatilization technology can successfully remove organic contaminants from water. It describes the performance evaluation of common volatilization technologies and provides an approach for selecting the appropriate technology for a given situation. Data necessary for the evaluation are described and, whenever possible, background data are given for selected hazardous organics. In addition to being useful for equipment selection, it can be used as an educational tool for background data on volatilization technologies or as a decision-making tool for purchasing a mobile technology. The impetus for developing a guide stems from involvement of the Hazardous Waste Engineering Researching Laboratory's Releases Control Branch in technical assistance activities that require assessment of the feasibility and cost of various treatment options. It was recognized that EPA On-Scene Coordinators (OSC) and their technical support personnel are often faced with changing or uncertain conditions that could affect the cost and feasibility of removing volatile substances from water. As conditions change or as some of the uncertainties are resolved, the OSC's technical support personnel are called upon to revise their estimates accordingly. It was recognized that the OSC and their technical support staffs did not have a concise guide on the subject of volatilization technologies and their application to spill cleanup operations. People with some technical training in chemistry and thermodynamics, but limited experience in participating or coordinating cleanup activities at uncontrolled hazardouswaste sites will find the guide useful. (A review of volatilization is provided for thos

Book Gas Transfer at Water Surfaces

Download or read book Gas Transfer at Water Surfaces written by W. Brutsaert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transfer across the surface of environmental waters is of interest as an important phase in the geophysical and natural biochemical cycles of numer ous substances; indeed it governs the transition, one way or the other, be tween the dissolved state in the water and the gaseous state in the atmo sphere. Especially with increasing population and industrialization, gas transfer at water surfaces has become a critical factor in the understanding of the various pathways of wastes in the environment and of their engineering management. This interfacial mass transfer is, by its very nature, highly complex. The air and the water are usually in turbulent motion, and the interface be tween them is irregular, and disturbed by waves, sometimes accompanied by breaking, spray and bubble formation. Thus the transfer involves a wide variety of physical phenomena occurring over a wide range of scales. As a consequence, scientists and engineers from diverse disciplines and problem areas, have approached the problem, often with greatly differing analytical and experimental techniques and methodologies.

Book An Evaluation of Rotary Air Stripping for Removal of Volatile Organics from Ground Water

Download or read book An Evaluation of Rotary Air Stripping for Removal of Volatile Organics from Ground Water written by Chris Dietrich and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rotary air stripping was researched and developed to remove volatile organic contaminants from groundwater. The Traverse Group, Inc, Ann Arbor MI, was contracted under a joint funding venture by the US Coast Guard and the US Air Force to evaluate feasibility of using rotary air stripping to treat water contaminated with benzene, toluene, xylenes, trichloroethylene, 1,2,dichloroethane, and tetrachloroethylene. A site of groundwater contamination at the US Coast Guard Station, Traverse City MI provided a readily available source of contaminated water for this work. A prototype rotary air stripper (RAS), manufactured specifically for this project, was installed onsite in Traverse City MI. The RAS (consisting of a packed bed 1.7 feet in diameter by 1.2 feet thick) was evaluated over a range of contaminant concentrations (63 to 19,000 ppb), liquid flow rates (50 to 120 gpm), air to water ratios (10:1 to 170:1 vol/vol), and rotor speeds (365 to 875 rpms). The effect of each parameter on removal efficiency was analyzed. Generally, removal efficiencies in excess of 99 percent were achieved for all contaminants (except 1,2-DCE) at an air-to-water ratio and rotor speed of 30:1 vol/vol and 435 rpms, respectively. Keywords: Water treatment, Air stripping, Rotary Air Stripper, Hazardous materials, Rotating packed beds, Acceleration, Mass transfer coefficients, Benzene, Toluene, Xylenes, Fuel contamination, Chlorinated organics.
