In considering French-speaking authors from France, Belgium, the United States, the Maghreb, and Sub-Saharan Africa, this collection delineates a rich international perspective on some of the most disturbing events of our time. Each essay testifies to the urgency expressed in works of fiction to give an account of human catastrophes, from the Shoah and the Rwandan genocide to the terrorist attacks of September 11, and the ongoing oppression of women in Islamic nations. Themes underlying this volume include an investigation into the origins of evil, its representations in writing, and the ethical responsibilities of authors who write on human suffering. Contemporary fiction on evil confronts us with fundamental questions: Can evil be attributed to intentionality, is evil “subconscious,” or is it the result of impersonal forces? Which styles of writing are ethically appropriate or effective for depicting evil? Can we speak of a veritable “poetics of evil” shared by contemporary authors? When does a literary text on evil become “evil”? In providing informed and nuanced answers to these important questions, the scholars engage in crucial theories of psychoanalysis, post-structuralism, and post-modernism, address a number of issues raised by trauma and genocide studies, and draw from critical frameworks in literary theory on testimony, the limits of representing the extreme, and “transgressive” writing.

Tracing elements of what the French call the roman d'analyse in the works of Boccaccio, Marguerite de Navarre, Cervantes, Marie de Lafayette, Samuel Richardson, Jane Austen, and Stendhal, Adele Kudish discusses how the metaphor of unconsummated love is deployed to represent a fundamental lack of insight into the self. Rather than depicting the mind as transparent, analytical fiction deals in the opacity of the mind. Narrators and characters are faced with deception, misprision, doubt, and confusion, leading to self-deception, jealousy, and crises of self. The European Roman d'Analyse reads such epistemological failures as symptoms of a more fundamental preoccupation with the human psyche as un-chartable and bizarre. In this way, the authors of romans d'analyse enact a larger philosophical project: an anatomy of the psyche wherein we are unable-or unwilling-to know ourselves.

On lui enseigna bien à secourir les malheureux; les portes du palais où s'écoula son enfance étaient toujours ouvertes aux nécessiteux; mais, tout en les assistant, il s'habitua à mépriser la cause de leur détresse et à regarder cette plaie comme irrémédiable dans l'humanité. Le désordre, la paresse, l'ignorance ou le manque de jugement, sources fatales d'égarement et de misère, lui parurent, avec raison, incurables chez les individus. On ne lui apprit point à croire que les masses doivent et peuvent insensiblement s'en affranchir, et qu'en prenant l'humanité corps à corps, en discutant avec elle, en la gourmandent, et la caressant tour à tour, comme un enfant qu'on aime, en lui pardonnant beaucoup de rechutes pour en obtenir quelques progrès, on fait plus pour elle qu'en jetant à ses membres perclus ou gangrenés le secours restreint de la compassion.
