Put yourself in the shoes of an African child or should I say feet because many children do not wear shoes.Imagine, growing up in a world where you lack the very basics in life, food, clean water, medicine, shelter, safety, a bed of your own. Beyond that, there are no toys, no dolls, and no soccer balls, no sweets and treats, at best, a bed of reeds to sleep on. School would be wonderful to attend but there is no money for school fees. So you stay at home and wait for a miracle, but for most there is none. Life is simply survival and staying alive. It would be amazing to learn how to read and write, but it may never happen for some ordinary African child, in fact there are not many in the family that Acquire the very basic education. There are few ways out of the slum in which you live. One is to get education, join criminal gangs, practice prostitution and at its worst get recruited to terror groups.However that is not the way you learned in your church, just up the path from your slum called Emanuel where they spoke of Holiness, right living and faith in God to bring about a future with hope. You have had a lot of hope, prayed a lot, but not seen the bright future. In fact many of the African children do not live long to know what life had in store for them. They succumb to illness, calamities and hostility in the community. Some are abandoned by their parents while others die in full watch of their parents who cannot do anything to stop the ordeal.The big question would be did their parents choose to be poor? Did they choose to live in drought invested regions which are unproductive? Did they choose not to seek education? Did they choose to bear children only for them to die or live a miserable life?Well when you get to the depth of this book you will realize that you are only lucky that life did not serve you with the same fate. It's sad that most people assume life is a bed of roses for everyone while it's totally a nightmare for many especially in poor African countries.

Mainly due to the staggering toll of HIV/AIDS, research effort has focused on treatment and prevention. Children have received attention primarily in relation to 'mother to child transmission' and paediatric AIDS. These issues are important and compelling but fail to capture the whole story - the unprecedented surge in the number of children made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS. In this book we reflect on the plight of children classified as vulnerable, review interventions implemented to improve their welfare and grapple with the concept of vulnerability as it relates to human rights and the African child.
