Hirschman makes a basic distinction between alternative ways of reacting to deterioration in business firms and, in general, to dissatisfaction with organizations: one, “exit,” is for the member to quit the organization or for the customer to switch to the competing product, and the other, “voice,” is for members or customers to agitate and exert influence for change “from within.” The efficiency of the competitive mechanism, with its total reliance on exit, is questioned for certain important situations. As exit often undercuts voice while being unable to counteract decline, loyalty is seen in the function of retarding exit and of permitting voice to play its proper role. The interplay of the three concepts turns out to illuminate a wide range of economic, social, and political phenomena. I wrote the book for my two sons as at this time. I realised if I did not survive they would never know the true story behind my ending. I wanted to acknowledge that just because I am now a specialist worker in Domestic Abuse I have not been immune to living with the trauma of the past, I am also human like any other woman and have a story like many victims of violence. Recovery is not forgetting it happened or shutting it out, it is being brave, being vulnerable and being heard. I hope my story will encourage others to believe that we can heal, we can find our voice. I am the living proof that you can. I hope this book will resonate with other survivors or family member's who have been directly or indirectly impacted by abuse. You are the expert on your own life no one else.Be kind x
