The work was concerned with various aspects of networking which include network modeling, communications techniques, traffic analysis and network control. An attempt has been made to develop a simple yet efficient time slot assignment algorithm was analyzed under a variety of slot depths and networks topologies using computer simulation. The Erlang' B results were used to provide more insight into the channel characteristics of the packet radio networks. The capabilities of implementing TDMA/CDMA hybrid schemes in the system were scrutinized. A method to estimate the transmission capacity of the inter-node links was found. We demonstrate its effectiveness in controlling local congestion by computer simulation. Graphical results were presented to highlight the behavior of the proposed packet radio networks. We concluded that an appropriate link weight function would provide efficient and reliable network services. The increased demand for wireless communication conflicts with the scarcity of the radio spectrum, but CRNS allow for more efficient use of the networks. The authors review packet level delay requirements of the voice service and session level delay requirements of the elastic/interactive data services, particularly constant-rate and on-off voice traffic capacities in CRNs with centralized and distributed network coordination. Some generic channel access schemes are considered as the coordination mechanism, and call admission control algorithms are developed for non-fully-connected CRNs. Other key topics include the advantages of supporting voice traffic flows with different delay requirements, the mean response time of the elastic data traffic over a centralized CRN, and effects of the traffic load at the base station and file length (service time requirement) distribution on the mean response time. Wireless n- works have been used for communication among fully distributed users in a multimedia environment that has the needs to provide real-time bursty traffic (such as voice or video) and data traffic with excellent reliability and service quality. To satisfy the huge wireless multimedia service demand and improve the system performance, efficient channel access methods and analytical methods must be provided. In this way very accurate models, that faithfully reproduce the stochastic behavior of multimedia wireless communication and computer networks, can be constructed. Most of these system models are discrete-time queueing systems. Queueing networks and Markov chains are commonly used for the p- formance and reliability evaluation of computer, communication, and m- ufacturing systems. Although there are quite a few books on the individual topics of queueing networks and Markov chains, we have found none that covers the topics of discrete-time and continuous-time multichannel mul- traffic queueing networks. On the other hand, the design and development of multichannel mul- hop network systems and interconnected network systems or integrated n- works of multimedia traffic require not only such average performance m- sures as the throughput or packet delay but also higher moments of traffic departures and transmission delay.

The focus of this book is on new, information-age technologies that promise to offer seamless integration of real-time data sharing, creating a single logical network architecture to facilitate the movement of data throughout the battlespace. Because the structure of this network is constrained by the fundamental trade-off between range, mobility and capacity that applies to all communications systems, this network is unlikely to be based on a single network technology. Book excerpt: This research project has focused on the development of protocols and reception techniques for distributed packet radio networks that exploit directional antennas to provide high-throughput, reliable data and voice communications, and that conserve sensor battery energy when relaying sensor data through the network. The research focused on the development of channel-access protocols, adaptive link protocols, and adaptive routing protocols for packet radio networks that employ spread-spectrum modulation. One goal of the research has been to ensure that critical data is forwarded from microsensors to data-fusion centers or mobile-radio end systems while efficiently utilizing the limited energy in the sensors' nonrechargeable batteries. A primary research emphasis has been the design of protocols that minimize the total energy consumption for store-and-forward routing through the sub-network of microsensors, and that account for energy depletion in individual sensors. An important component of this emphasis is the design of protocols that utilize more capable radio systems in the tactical network whenever possible to minimize the amount of data relaying required of the sensors. A second, related emphasis has been efficient exploitation of the presence within the tactical network of mobile radio systems that utilize directional antennas. Primary topics of the research include the design of the packet-acquisition techniques, channel-access protocols, and resource-management techniques that allow a node with multiple fixed-beam directional antennas to exploit their capabilities without introducing a significant increase in the complexity of the network's protocols. The Short Message System (SMS) has proved to be incredibly popular and is supported by most GSM, TDMA and CDMA mobile networks. This volume focuses on the Short Message Service introduced by the European Telecommunications Standard Institute (ETSI) for GSM and GPRS networks. On the basis of ETSI standard, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is currently the organisation responsible for maintaining the SMS technical specifications. In its most basic form, the Short Messaging Service allows users to exchange short messages composed of a limited amount of text and it is expected that up to 100 Billion short messages could be exchanged monthly by the end of 2002. The Enhanced Message Service (EMS), an application-level extension of SMS, supersedes basic SMS features by allowing elements such as images, animations, formatted text and monophonic melodies to be inserted in short or concatenated messages. Recently, the 3GPP has been focusing on the development of the Multimedia Message Service (MMS). MMS features include the exchange of messages containing polyphonic melodies, large images, video elements sometimes organised with a multimedia presentation language such as SMIL or xHTML. MMS will be supported by 2.5 G and 3G networks. MMS specifications have reached a fairly mature stage and MMS commercial solutions are appearing on the market. Unlike EMS, MMS has been specified by the 3GPP as a service independent from the underlying network technologies. In parallel to the 3GPP standardisation process, other organisations have specified network-specific implementations of MMS such as the WAP implementation defined by the WAP Forum.
