Download or read book Il promo libro de madrigali a cinque voci Venice 1578 written by Leonard Meldert and published by A-R Editions, Inc.. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leonard Melderts Primo libro de madrigali a cinque voci (Venice, 1578) has an interest and musical quality far beyond what one might guess from the modest facts of the authors life and works. The book partly reflects the musical tastes of the court of Urbino in the final years of Duke Guidobaldo II Della Rovere (151474) and of the private household of his brother, Cardinal Giulio Della Rovere (153378). But its structure and contents display some unusual features that can be linked to the circumstances of Melderts life and to his own initiative in projecting and assembling his book of madrigals. Moreover, it offers the first settings of then-recent poems by Torquato Tasso, Giovanni Battista Guarini, and Giuliano Goselini, the result of the composers personal contacts in the court of Ferrara and his ties to the literary and musical circle of Antonio Londonio, a Milan-based Spanish diplomat. This edition presents the Primo libro for the first time in a modern edition, examining Melderts textual choices and musical style within the contexts of courtly life, his personal biography, and the nascent seconda prattica.

Book excerpt: The eighteenth century Sicilian Prelate, musician and composer Monsignor Antonino Reggio has been described by his contemporaries as 'a man of great intellect, erudite, and very deep in music, eminent for his skill in the art, and learning in the science of sound'. This short monograph highlights one of Reggio's works, a manuscript containing twenty quartets set for three voices. The work is unusually set for three sopranos and a contralto in the 'duetto notturno' style. The current work outlines the history of the three extant manuscripts of the work and considers them in the light of the 'duetto notturno' style. There is a detailed section on the original Metastasio texts, together with a comprehensive bibliography. It is planned to be a companion to the forthcoming critical performance edition, in preparation by the current author. Also it is a prelude to a more comprehensive biography of Reggio currently in preparation. .

Book excerpt: Voci is an innovative textbook for students of Italian at the intermediate level. It is designed to engage readers in conversation through a series of interactive activities and reading and writing exercises. The text features a variety of Italian `voices' - selections from literature, interviews, and contemporary film, as well as illustrations of a number of Italian dialects. Included are writings from such authors as Dante, Giovanni Guareschi, and Luigi Pirandello; as well as interviews with the historian Piero Melograni and the novelist and linguist Umberto Eco. A series of topics ranging from cultural attitudes to dialect variation provides the focus for the fourteen units of the book. Each unit contains an introductory section that establishes the theme of the unit and illustrates one or more styles of expression; a linguistic section that includes grammar, vocabulary, and language exercises; a reading selection that expands the topics introduced in the unit; and a writing task linked to the unit's theme. A unique feature of Voci is the emphasis on paired and small-group activities designed to prompt students to work together in developing their own conversational strategies. The aim of Voci is to promote creative expression in Italian. Through the combination of readings and the exercises students learn about Italian culture, history, and language while they expand and develop their language skills.

Book excerpt: From one of Italy’s greatest writers, a stunning novel “filled with shimmering, risky, darting observation” (Colm Tóibín) After WWII, a small Italian town struggles to emerge from under the thumb of Fascism. With wit, tenderness, and irony, Elsa, the novel’s narrator, weaves a rich tapestry of provincial Italian life: two generations of neighbors and relatives, their gossip and shattered dreams, their heartbreaks and struggles to find happiness. Elsa wants to imagine a future for herself, free from the expectations and burdens of her town’s history, but the weight of the past will always prove unbearable, insistently posing the question: “Why has everything been ruined?”
Download or read book Screening China s Soft Power written by Paola Voci and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Promoting China's cultural soft power by disseminating modern Chinese values is one of the policies of President Xi Jinping. Although, it is usually understood as a top-down initiative, implemented willingly or unwillingly by writers, filmmakers, artists, and so on, and often manifesting itself in clumsy and awkward ways, for example, the concept of "the Chinese dream," intended to rival and perhaps appeal more strongly than "the American dream," modern Chinese values are in fact put forward in many ways by many different cultural actors. Through analyses of film festivals, CCTV, Confucius Institutes, auteurs, blockbusters, reality TV, and online digital cultures, this book exposes the limitations of China's officially promoted soft power in both conception and practice, and proposes a pluralistic approach to understanding Chinese soft power in local, regional, and transnational contexts. As such, the book demonstrates the limitations of existing theories of soft power, and argues that the US-derived concept of soft power can benefit from being examined from a China perspective.
