Book Vocational and Moral Guidance Classic Reprint

Download or read book Vocational and Moral Guidance Classic Reprint written by Jesse Buttrick Davis and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vocational and Moral Guidance This manual of vocational and moral guidance is prepared in response to a demand for more detailed information regarding the work that was originated by the writer in the Central High School of Grand Rapids, Michigan. The bibliography appended has been compiled with the assistance of the Grand Rapids Public Library. Mr. Samuel H. Ranck, librarian, has placed every privilege at the disposal of the writer and has cooperated in the preparation of the lists. This bibliography is not exhaustive. The lists that have appeared in earlier bulletins have been thoroughly tried out. Books that did not prove valuable in the hands of the pupils or the teachers have been discarded. The attempt has been made to select a few books that were adapted to the pupils of the several grades, and that were most suited to the purpose of the work in hand. As new books are constantly appearing along the lines studied, teachers and counselors should be on the lookout for up-to-date material in this rather new field. Practically no references have been made to periodical literature, for it seemed impracticable to attempt a bibliography of this type. It should be noted, however, that vocational and moral topics are receiving more and more attention in the current magazines. Book Vocational Guidance Report 1913 1916 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Vocational Guidance Report 1913 1916 Classic Reprint written by Anna Yeomans Reed and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vocational Guidance Report 1913-1916 Three years ago, the school management, under authority of the Board of Directors, entered upon an inquiry as to why boys and girls leave school, what and how they do after leaving, and what the schools might have done to equip them better for earning a living. This inquiry was conducted under the direction of Mrs. J. A. Reed, whose first report Seattle Chil dren in School and in Industry, published in 1915, pointed clearly to the need of further investigation. This present re port, though not conclusive in its findings, is yet so indicative of educational shortcomings and of possible remedies as to be very suggestive. The publication of the report is justified by the fact that many teachers and the public generally are interested in the problems which it discusses and because it presents a serious and continued study of conditions and effects in school and in industry. It is probably the first attempt of a school system, under taken through its own instrumentalities, to survey and pub lish conditions as found. Whatever view may be taken of it, the report treats vital issues, which are of concern to children, homes, society and industry, and addresses them squarely. Book Vocational Guidance Through the Library Classic Reprint

Download or read book Vocational Guidance Through the Library Classic Reprint written by Mary E. Hall and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vocational Guidance Through the Library Most leave because they are tired of it, because it does not hold their interest. Among the poorer classes tens of thousands of our boys and girls are each year sent out from the elementary schools and, as Charles Booth puts it, "pitchforked" into the industrial world with characters unformed and without any definite preparation for work. Many of these drift into the "blind alley" occupations which train for no special work and have in them no outlook and no hope of advancement. At eighteen many of these find themselves unable to earn enough to support even themselves, much less others who may be dependent upon them. With courage gone they lose interest in their work and finally are dismissed and added to the number of unemployed and unemployables. The great majority might have been happy in profitable labor and have had some outlook for advancement, if parents had insisted that they remain in school until they had received some special training for work and were more mature and better fitted mentally, physically, and morally for the battle of life. Parents are finding it more and more difficult to guide their children into vocations best suited to their abilities. Conditions in our cities are so complex and there is so much need for specialization that it is impossible for the busy parent to have a proper knowledge of the various occupations, the necessary preparation, their opportunities, etc. Many parents give no serious thought to this problem and large numbers are too ignorant to make any careful study of the question. There has been no organized effort in the past to bring the would be worker and the employer together. Many bright students have lacked the friend who could bring them in touch with the right work and the right employer. Many an employer would prize the services of these promising boys and girls but he has never thought of applying to the school for them. II. The Aim In Vocational Guidance. Professor Bagley in his "Educative process" reminds us that the ultimate end in education is the development of the socially efficient individual. "That person only is socially efficient who is not a drag upon society, who, in other words, can 'pull his own weight' and earn his own livelihood either in a productive employment or by guiding, inspiring and educating others to productive effort." The aim in the vocational guidance movement in the schools is to help each student in the schools to find what is for him the "best possible work." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vocational Guidance: The Teacher as a Counselor This book, like The Boy and His Gang, springs directly from personal experiences in the Lyman School for Boys, the Industrial School of Massachusetts for delinquent boys. Under the efficient leadership of Superintendent T. F. Chapin, this school has been made over from one of the old military type to a free school where boys, through learning to do by doing, are given a chance to obtain a practical common-sense education. The school is an industrial school in fact as well as in name. It could justly be called a vocational school, for many of the boys obtain here the guidance and training for their life work. The great majority of the four hundred boys are from twelve to sixteen years of age, the right age for guidance. One half of their day is spent in the schoolroom and one half in manual training in the shops or in outdoor work. A short daily period and Saturday afternoon are given to play. In the free life of the school the new boys soon learn by conversation with their older and more experienced cottage mates, or with their masters or teachers, and by personal observation in the various shops, the kind of work which they would like to do. Instruction in agriculture was given once a week in all the schoolrooms. A school garden plot was planted and cared for by each boy in school hours. Two cottages also had garden plots for the boys. Instruction in dairying was given to about twenty-five boys in connection with the practical work of caring for the herd of sixty milch cows. Opportunities for driving the school teams were open to four or five boys. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Vocational Guidance for the Professions Classic Reprint

Download or read book Vocational Guidance for the Professions Classic Reprint written by Edwin Tenney Brewster and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vocational Guidance for the Professions Vocational guidance, if it is to be of any value, must be based on facts; and the facts can be obtained by a careful survey of the vocations. With a few exceptions sons must fill the places vacated by their fathers. There must always be a fair adjustment between supply and demand. Disregarding this fundamental law, our schools are pushing two or three times too many young men toward the professions already overcrowded. The results are disastrous to the misguided youth. Every parent and teacher who knows the present antipathy to manual labor, and the false enthusiasm for white-collar jobs and the professions, should make a very careful investigation of the reasons for the choice of the professional career by a son or pupil. Every youth should be led also to make a very careful examination and take account of stock - to see whether his decision is based on social influences or on real ability. Book Vocational Guidance for Girls Classic Reprint

Download or read book Vocational Guidance for Girls Classic Reprint written by Marguerite Stockman Dickson and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vocational Guidance for Girls Fortunate are we to have from the pen of Mrs. Dickson a book on the vocational guidance of girls. Mrs. Dickson has the all-round life experiences which give her the kind of training needed for a broad and sympathetic approach to the delicate, intricate, and complex problems of woman's life in the swiftly changing social and industrial world. Mrs. Dickson was a teacher for seven years in the grades in the city of New York. She then became the partner of a superintendent of schools in the business of making a home. In these early homemaking years there came from the pen of Mrs. Dickson a series of historical books for the grades which have placed her among the leading educational writers of the country. During the long sickness of her husband she filled for a while two administrative positions - homemaker and superintendent of schools. Her three children are now in high school and are beginning to plan for their own life work. With the broad training of homemaker, wife, mother, teacher, writer, and administrator, Mrs. Dickson has the combination of experiences to enable her to introduce teachers and mothers to the very difficult problems of planning wisely big life careers for our girls. The book is so plainly and guardedly written that it can also be used as a textbook for the girls themselves in connection with civic and vocational courses. The only difficulty with the book for a text is that it is so attractively written on such vital problems that the student will not stop reading at the end of the lesson.
