Book The Effect of Game based Learning on Vocabulary Acquisition for Middle School English Language Learners

Download or read book The Effect of Game based Learning on Vocabulary Acquisition for Middle School English Language Learners written by Jeanette Benoit and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English language learners (ELLs) in America face huge challenges in middle school. Although many ELLs quickly assimilate into the American culture and develop their social language rapidly, they continue to struggle academically. One reason ELLs find themselves behind their native English-speaking peers is their lack of academic vocabulary knowledge. Vocabulary can be learned both implicitly with extensive reading and explicitly with direct and focused instruction. Research has shown that implicit vocabulary learning is not as effective with ELLs and the need for effective explicit learning strategies is apparent. This study revealed no statistically significant difference in academic vocabulary scores when a game-based curriculum was introduced compared to traditional workbook lessons. Because games are popular with adolescents in today's society, teachers should consider bringing this affinity for gaming into the classroom to increase academic learning and success.

Book The Effects of Gamification Based Formative Assessment on Motivation and Vocabulary Acquisition in ESL Classroom

Download or read book The Effects of Gamification Based Formative Assessment on Motivation and Vocabulary Acquisition in ESL Classroom written by Faten Alzaid and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Gamification is a new concept in education, defined as the use of game-based mechanics and game thinking to engage students, motivate action, and promote learning. In this study, gamification was integrated with classroom formative assessment and produced via technology to investigate its potential to enhance motivation and learning of vocabulary as opposed to traditional paper-based formative assessment methods. As of yet, there is not much research comparing the effectiveness of technology game-based formative assessment (GBFA) and paper-based formative assessment (PBFA) to promote vocabulary learning and motivation inside second language (L2) classrooms. This study investigated whether technology GBFA can improve vocabulary acquisition more than PBFA. This study also elicited ESL learners' feelings toward GBFA and PBFA in terms of perceived learning values, motivation, and competence. Furthermore, this study was interested investigating whether there is a correlation between students' motivation and vocabulary acquisition. In the current study, GBFA and PBFA sessions were applied to two higher intermediate ESL classrooms for two weeks. Both groups performed the same assessment tasks except that the materials were different. The control group used traditional worksheets while the experimental group used their mobile phones to complete the assessment tasks. After three formative assessment sessions, participants completed a survey about their experiences using GBFA and PBFA. Then, students' performance in the post-test was compared with their responses to motivation items in the survey to investigate the correlation between motivation and learning. The results confirm that gamified formative assessment could increase vocabulary learning more than the paper-based method. It also found that sense of motivation and competence was higher in the experimental group than the control group. The results also revealed that there was a direct relationship between motivation and vocabulary acquisition. However, students in the whole sample felt both approaches are valuable for their vocabulary learning. This study suggests that inclusion of technology and gamification in classroom formative assessment can improve motivation, vocabulary acquisition, and competence as compared to traditional paper-based formative assessment." --

Book Using Game based Approach to Teach English Vocabulary

Download or read book Using Game based Approach to Teach English Vocabulary written by Maryam Samavati and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-02-08 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to many educators, teaching language to children should be started at earliest ages of schooling. If the goal is to begin teaching English to children at an early age, we should choose an appropriate method to implement such education. The proposed method in this study is using the games and the focus is on teaching vocabulary. The games provide a situation in which the student experience problem-solving and discovery learning. To investigate the role of this proposed tool, the researcher chose a qualitative-quantitative method to answer the research questions about the role of the games in fostering learning for the students and motivating the students to learn. The results of administering a pre-test, doing the experiment, administering a post-test, and distributing a questionnaire along with reviewing teacher's notes showed that the games not only helped the students learn the vocabulary but also showed them how to share information as a group. The evidences also showed that the students became motivated to learn rather than forced to learn.

Book excerpt: Vocabulary learning strategies refer to the intentional behavior and thoughts that learners make use of during learning in order to better help them understand, learn or remember the target language vocabulary. Vocabulary learning strategies are important for teachers, students and researchers since they work to achieve high-quality learning outcomes. This study was an attempt to investigate the overall pattern of English vocabulary learning strategies used by some Chinese college non-English majors and to explore the relationship between the vocabulary learning strategies they employed and the achievement they made in reading comprehension. A questionnaire, based on Gu and Johnson's (1996), was administered to a sample of 141 college students from three universities. Statistical description, independent sample test and correlation analysis among vocabulary learning strategies and reading comprehension scores were analyzed by SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Science).

Book Effects of Read aloud Strategies on Young Children s Vocabulary Learning

Download or read book Effects of Read aloud Strategies on Young Children s Vocabulary Learning written by Mary Caitlin Gallingane and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both the short-term and long-term instruction periods were effective, the long-term condition much more so and obtaining a large effect size. Further analysis showed that the intervention did not have differential effects on students' learning according to prior levels of vocabulary knowledge; students with low vocabulary levels were able to learn the targeted words. Evidence of positive learning outcomes supports the instructional intervention and offers teachers a structure for storybook read-aloud sessions that addresses goals of an emergent literacy curriculum effectively. The lack of differential effects suggests that the approach may be a key to increasing the rate of vocabulary learning that is crucial for at-risk students. It would take more instructional time to teach targeted words for four days instead of two, but knowing more words leads to increased incidental learning of words making the extra instructional time beneficial to long-term word learning and achievement.
