The plot revolves around the character of Augusto, a wealthy, intellectual and introverted young man and his love affair with Eugenia, which eventually ends in heartbreak. Augusto decides to kill himself, but decides that he needs to consult Unamuno himself, who had written an article on suicide which Augusto had read. When Augusto speaks with Unamuno, the truth is revealed that Augusto is actually a fictional character whom Unamuno has created. Augusto is not real, Unamuno explains, and for that reason cannot kill himself. Augusto asserts that he exists, even though he acknowledges internally that he doesn't, and threatens Unamuno by telling him that he is not the ultimate author. Augusto reminds Unamuno that he might be just one of God's dreams. Augusto dies and the book ends with the author himself debating to himself about bringing back the character of Augusto. He establishes, however, that this would not be feasible. Following on from his translation of Abel Sanchez , John Macklin's edition provides a much needed new English translation, alongside the Spanish text, together with a substantial introduction.

In 1886 he went to Chile, where he published Azul (1888), his first important book of poems and stories. Later he lived for extended periods in Argentina, Spain, and France, and in these countries produced his best work: compelling poems of beauty, style, and dignity, especially Cantos de vida y esperanza (1905). The perfection of form, exotic essences, and rich ornamentation of his earlier work give way in his most mature poems to self-probings and doubts, the anguish so characteristic of twentieth-century literature. But the hedonistic note, the quenchless appetite for life, dominating Azul and Prosas profanas (1896) never die out, and are magnificently present in El poema del otoño (1910). Darío has had a tremendous impact on Hispanic literature. He is one of the best examples of the poet who is true to his art as determined by his innermost impulses. His poetry has fertilized a whole generation of writers in Spanish America and in Spain, and even now his influence continues to be felt.

Este libro es también un recordatorio para nosotros amar a nuestra Iglesia y defenderla a pesar de que haya muchas cosas que nos puedan provocar desencanto. No debemos desanimarnos; al contrario, debemos estar felices de saber el camino que conduce a la paz y a la salvación. La Iglesia se inició con la traición de Judas, que contribuyó a la cruz de Jesús. Muchos hombres y mujeres entran en la Iglesia, pero tienen una interpretación errónea de la fe y de la jerarquía. Ellos no están de acuerdo ni contentos con una cosa ni otra. Piensan que pueden escoger y elegir lo que quieran y como quieran. Sin embargo, es importante entender que la Iglesia no es, y nunca ha sido, una democracia. La Iglesia es jerárquica y encuentra su fundamento en la autoridad que el Señor Jesús recibió del Padre. Con esa autoridad, Él dijo a Pedro: " Tú eres Pedro, y sobre esta piedra edificaré mi Iglesia, y el poder del infierno no la derrotará".
