Book excerpt: Flandrau was a young rich American with an individual sense of humor, and no prejudices except against Western uniformity. His travel book is more than a ramble among places; it is a journey among the Mexican people. His brother established a coffee plantation in Mexico in 1903, and Charles traveled there with his mother in 1904. The experiences gained from this visit, along with two other visits in subsequent winters, formed the basis for Viva Mexico! which he described as "one long, carelessly written but absorbing romance."

Book Mexico from Independence to Revolution 1810 1910

Download or read book Mexico from Independence to Revolution 1810 1910 written by William Dirk Raat and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1982-01-01 with total page 1080 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first classroom reader devoted exclusively to nineteeth-century Mexican history, this volume brings together twenty-six essays and primary documents treating Mexico's Age of Caudillos. The readings—many by Mexican politicians, historians, and commentators and available here in English for the first time—are organized into four groups representing major eras in the early national development of Mexico: Independence, the age of Santa Anna, La Reforma and the French Intervention, and the Porfiriato. The selections range from autobiography to political and economic history, from the history of ideas to philosophy and social history. The interpretive essays represent both traditional and revisionist views, while the primary materials comprise both political documents and contemporary personal accounts.

Book The Classical Mexican Cinema

Download or read book The Classical Mexican Cinema written by Charles Ramírez Berg and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the mid-1930s to the late 1950s, Mexican cinema became the most successful Latin American cinema and the leading Spanish-language film industry in the world. Many Cine de Oro (Golden Age cinema) films adhered to the dominant Hollywood model, but a small yet formidable filmmaking faction rejected Hollywood’s paradigm outright. Directors Fernando de Fuentes, Emilio Fernández, Luis Buñuel, Juan Bustillo Oro, Adolfo Best Maugard, and Julio Bracho sought to create a unique national cinema that, through the stories it told and the ways it told them, was wholly Mexican. The Classical Mexican Cinema traces the emergence and evolution of this Mexican cinematic aesthetic, a distinctive film form designed to express lo mexicano. Charles Ramírez Berg begins by locating the classical style’s pre-cinematic roots in the work of popular Mexican artist José Guadalupe Posada at the turn of the twentieth century. He also looks at the dawning of Mexican classicism in the poetics of Enrique Rosas’ El Automóvil Gris, the crowning achievement of Mexico’s silent filmmaking era and the film that set the stage for the Golden Age films. Berg then analyzes mature examples of classical Mexican filmmaking by the predominant Golden Age auteurs of three successive decades. Drawing on neoformalism and neoauteurism within a cultural studies framework, he brilliantly reveals how the poetics of Classical Mexican Cinema deviated from the formal norms of the Golden Age to express a uniquely Mexican sensibility thematically, stylistically, and ideologically.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A White Umbrella in Mexico I have delighted my soul with the sway ing Of the lilies in the sunlight, the rush of the roses crowding over mouldy walls, the broad-leaved palms cooling the Shad ows, and have wasted none of my precious time searching for the lizard and the mole crawling at their roots. Content with the novelty and charm of the picturesque life about me, I have watched the naked children at play and the patient peon at work; and the haughty hidalgo, armed and guarded, inspecting his plantation and the dark-skinned seno rita with her lips pressed close to the gratings Of the confessional; and even the stealthy, furtive glance of the outlaw, without caring to analyze or solve any one of the many social and religious problems which make these conditions possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Under the Cactus Flag a Story of Life in Mexico IN the quiet town of Corona, far to the south of the great western State that basks along the warm Pacific shores, lived little Mary Annesley. She was barely sixteen when this chapter of her story opens, and Whatever might have been said of her after wards, She would scarcely at that time have been selected as a heroine of romance. Her tresses, when unbound, lacked much of sweeping the ground; her eyes were not of the kind that dazzle the beholder with their brilliancy nobody had yet likened the pose of her figure to the sway of a lily on its stalk, and her entrance into crowded assemblies had never, so far, provoked gen eral murmurs of admiration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mexico as I Saw It There, men still carried arms; no one dare do Other wise, for, although seldom necessary, the mere fact of having them commands respect. Wild journeys on horse back through the mountains, to Old Aztec ruins, more over, sounded inviting. In some respects Mexico, in this year Of grace 1901, is highly civilised, but in others it remains utterly barbaric. Truly a land of paradox. It is most interesting, always picturesque, sometimes blood-curdling, and Often sad. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
