Book Mexican Banking and Investment in Transition

Download or read book Mexican Banking and Investment in Transition written by John A. Adams and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1997-04-22 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Banking and investment in Mexico have changed radically over the past decade, and the economic events that prompted these changes will have a significant impact on Mexico's role in regional and world financial markets. Adams traces the evolution of Mexico's banking and investment activities, reviews current conditions and their implications for future investment opportunities in Mexico, and makes clear that what happens to Mexico's economy and political stability will have major implications for what happens elsewhere in the world. One of the first books to look at banking and investment in Mexico after the peso crash of 1994-1995, with a highly detailed bibliography and notes, Adams's study will be important reading for international business, finance, and investment professionals and for their colleagues with similar interests throughout the academic community. The fate of both Mexico and the United States is that the two countries are forever tied by geography. The historical evolution of the dual interaction between the peoples of these two nations is and will be significant for the future of both countries. With this in mind, the book is divided into chapters reviewing such themes as the interaction and historical financial events that transpired during the advent of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the expansion of cross-border financial and investment services, as well as a framework and background review of the events leading up to and resulting from the devaluations of the 1970s and 1980s, and more recently the evolution of the peso crisis of 1994-1995. The imperceptible yet gradual economic integration of the two economies has required time in developing, while not always being seamless in its implementation and transition. American macroeconomic policy has long had a direct impact on the economy of Mexico, as is evidenced by the impact of U.S. interest rates on the financial underpinnings of the Mexican treasury and the banking system to assist with the overall economic growth of the nation. An appreciation for the historically sensitive issues and perspectives, be they nationalization of the oil industry, immigration, or market access for foreign financial services, is paramount to a fuller understanding of doing business on both sides of the border.

Book Viva Juarez Volume I

Download or read book Viva Juarez Volume I written by and published by . This book was released on 2021-05 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Republic of Mexico was shakily emerging from its most recent civil war which finally established the primacy of its new Liberal Constitution. Burdened by crushing debt, much of which was the fault of the previous Conservative Government which borrowed from Europe to prosecute the war, President Benito Juarez refused to repay. It was 1862 and United States was fully engaged in its own civil war. Ruthlessly, Napoleon III of France saw his opportunity to force repayment of the debts to France as well as to strike a blow against Western Democracy. The perfect moment came when the defeated Mexican Conservatives offered the Imperial Throne of Mexico to Austrian Prince Maximilian. Promising his complete support, and promoting the lie that the Habsburg Prince would be welcomed with open arms, Napoleon plotted to seize Mexico and reestablish a European Power in The New World, violating the United States' long standing Monroe Doctrine. The French Army invaded Mexico and brought in Allied forces from Austria, Belgium, and even Egypt! The next five years saw sieges and battles of all scales in a war reminiscent of the Great Napoleon's in Spain, and presaged French and US involvement in Southeast Asia a century later. Not a general history of that war, "Viva Juarez!" is a two volume reference book on all military aspects of the conflict, especially intended for historical miniatures war gamers, but which speaks to the serious student of military history, as well. "Volume 1-The Armies," (62 pages) provides the most complete collection of uniform information for all combatants ever assembled in one source. Second Empire French, Austrian, Belgian, Egyptian, and even late American Civil War uniforms are all part of the historical mix. Lavishly illustrated plates by contemporary artists and modern ones, including Knötel, Hefter, and Boissellier are provided. Completing the collection, former Disney artist, Nick Stern, has provided more examples in his own style. Besides details of dress, Readers will find full organizational data for all combatant armies is included, with illustrated sections on weaponry and their details."Volume 2-The Battles" (208 pages) provides all available information for refighting thirty-one of the most important actions of that bitter war. All engagements appear in chronological order, with descriptions of the action, thorough Orders of Battle, and at least one period battlefield map printed in color, full page size for maximum accessibility. Previous works on the subject have been based on the limited English language sources. But more than two years research with previously unused sources in contemporary French, German, and Spanish books, periodicals, and museum map collections, have resulted in a unique contribution to the historical literature. "Viva Juarez!" is now the "go to" source for one of the pivotal military campaigns in Mexican history and that of the Americas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National Book Award Finalist: The “impressive” conclusion to the “magisterial trilogy on the mythology of violence in American history” (Film Quarterly). “The myth of the Western frontier—which assumes that whites’ conquest of Native Americans and the taming of the wilderness were preordained means to a progressive, civilized society—is embedded in our national psyche. U.S. troops called Vietnam ‘Indian country.’ President John Kennedy invoked ‘New Frontier’ symbolism to seek support for counterinsurgency abroad. In an absorbing, valuable, scholarly study, [the author] traces the pervasiveness of frontier mythology in American consciousness from 1890. . . . Dime novels and detective stories adapted the myth to portray gallant heroes repressing strikers, immigrants and dissidents. Completing a trilogy begun with Regeneration Through Violence and The Fatal Environment, Slotkin unmasks frontier mythmaking in novels and Hollywood movies. The myth’s emphasis on use of force over social solutions has had a destructive impact, he shows.” —Publishers Weekly “Stirring . . . Breaks new ground in its careful explication of the continuing dynamic between politics and myth, myth and popular culture.” —The New York Times “A subtle and wide-ranging examination how America’s fascination with the frontier has affected its culture and politics. . . . Intellectual history at its most stimulating—teeming with insights into American violence, politics, class, and race.” —Kirkus Reviews

Book Viva Hollywood

Download or read book Viva Hollywood written by Luis I. Reyes and published by Running Press Adult. This book was released on 2022-09-13 with total page 633 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through an authoritative narrative and lavish photography, this is an in-depth history of the stars, films, achievements, and influence of the Hispanic and Latino community in Hollywood history from the silent era to the present day. Overcoming obstacles of prejudice, ignorance, and stereotyping, this group has given the world some of its most beloved stars and told some of its most indelible stories. Viva Hollywood examines the stars in front of the screen as well as the people behind-the-scenes who have created a rich legacy across more than 100 years. The role of Latin women on screen is explored through the professional lives of Dolores Del Rio, Rita Hayworth, Raquel Welch, Salma Hayek, Penélope Cruz, and many more. The book covers the films and careers of actors ranging from silent screen idol Antonio Moreno, to international Oscar-winning star Anthony Quinn, to Andy Garcia and Antonio Banderas. A spotlight is also given to craftspeople who elevated the medium with their artistry—visionaries like cinematographer John Alonzo, Citizen Kane scenic artist Mario Larrinaga, and Oscar-winning makeup artist Beatrice de Alba. The stories of these and many others begins through a lens of stereotyped on-screen personas of Latin Lovers, sexy spitfires, banditos, and gangsters. World War II saw an embrace of Latin culture as the “Good Neighbor Policy” made it both fashionable and patriotic to feature stories set south of the border. Social problem films of the 1950s and '60s brought fresh looks at the community, with performances like Katy Jurado in High Noon, the cast of West Side Story, and racial inequality depicted in George Stevens's Giant. Civil Rights, the Chicano Movement, and the work of activist actors such as Ricardo Montalban and Edward James Olmos influenced further change in Hollywood in subsequent decades and paved the way for modern times and stars the likes of Jennifer Lopez and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Illustrated by more than 200 full-color and black-and-white images, Viva Hollywood is both a sweeping history and a celebration of the legacy of some of the greatest art and artists ever captured on screen.
