Excerpt: ...of Brisbane and in the whole colony, together with the infantile mortality for ten years from 1871 to 1880. "' Victorian Year Book, 1879-1880, page 137. SUMMARY of Monthly Reports of Vital Statistics of Brisbane and Suburbs, showing the Death-rate in each month of the year 1880; the Annual Death-rats to which the rate each month is equal; the Death-rate in the Metropolitan District as compared to the Annual Death-rate of the Colony; also the true Infantile Mortality, or Deaths of Children under one year, as compared to the Births, in the Registry District of Brisbane and in the whole of Queensland, and the Infantile Mortality for Ten Years, viz., from 1871 to 1880. " Population on the 1st Jhliunry, 1879.-During the first six months of the year the percentages were calculated on this popnlallon, that being the latest proeurable. 1 Population on the lst January, 1B80.--The percentages for the last six months of the year were calculated on this population, the Vital Statistics for 1879 being by that time complete and an estimate of the population to the end of that year urlved at.; These percentages are oslculuod on the Mean Population for 1880 estimated utter the close of the year. The table shows that the death-rate in the whole metropolitan district has been 15-26, in the municipality 12-59, and in the suburban portion 2416. The rate in the suburbs is a little lower than in the previous year, but it is remarkable that the death-rate in the city is lower than the death-rate in the colony as a whole, the latter being, as before shown, and as shown in the table for comparison, 13'59.. The following figures show how great an improvement has taken place 1n the municipality of Brisbane during the last four years, from 1877 to...

Of these, 29,111 were employed in commerce in all its branches, 42,015 followed industrial pursuits, and 61,233 were engaged in agriculture or other primary production. In 1895 there were 1,721 deaths recorded of males engaged in occupations included in one or the other of the three groups under consideration--viz., 352 commercial, 54Z_industrial, and 822 primary producers, so that calculations based on the figures above stated give the following results: ---Centesimnl Proportion of Males Centeslmal Proportion of Male Centesimal Ratio of foregoing in each Class to total Males Deaths in each Class to total Death Percentage, 1895, to in all three Classes in Census Male Deaths in all three foregoing Population perPopulstlon of 1891. The industrial class comes next, and, as was the case in previous years, primary producers contributed the largest relative proportion to the mortality rate in 1895. With respect to females, the information, as furnished on the death certificates, is evidently so unreliable that little is to be derived from an investigation of the figures. For instance, itis absurd to suppose that out of all those ordinarily engaged in commercial pursuits only 2 died during 1895; still such is the case, if dependence is to be...
