Book excerpt: "One of the most important devotional works of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, this book provided a major source for both visual and literary artists, as well as for preachers, contemplatives, and believes. The amazing number of manuscript sources attests to its far-reaching influence. Gospel accounts of Christ's life are supplemented by apocryphal material from a variety of sources, to provide in an inviting style a highly readable biography. The translation brings to life the pathos, humor, and wisdom of Caulibu's book while maintaining impeccable scholarship. The volume is further enhanced by eight full-color plates selected from the miniatures in MS 410, Corpus Christi College, Oxford."

Book excerpt: David Friedrich Strauss's Das Leben Jesu kritisch bearbeitet (1835) brought about a new dawn in Biblical criticism by applying the 'myth theory' to the life of Jesus. Strauss treated the Gospel narrative like any other historical work, and denied all supernatural elements in the Gospels. Download or read book Jesus the Gospels and the Galilean Crisis written by Tucker S. Ferda and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-27 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tucker S. Ferda examines the theory of the Galilean crisis: the notion that the historical Jesus himself had grappled with the failure of his mission to Israel. While this theory has been neglected since the 19th century, due to research moving to consider the response of the early church to the rejection of the gospel, Ferda now provides fresh insight on Jesus' own potential crisis of faith. Ferda begins by reconstructing the origin of the crisis theory, expanding upon histories of New Testament research and considering the contributions made before Hermann Samuel Reimarus. He shows how the crisis theory was shaped by earlier and so-called “pre-critical” gospel interpretation and examines how, despite the claims of modern scholarship, the logic of the crisis theory is still a part of current debate. Finally, Ferda argues that while the crisis theory is a failed hypothesis, its suggestions on early success and growing opposition in the ministry, as well as its claim that Jesus met and responded to disappointing cases of rejection, should be revisited. This book resurrects key historical aspects of the crisis theory for contemporary scholarship.

Download or read book The Jesus Handbook written by Jens Schröter and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2022-11-17 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An authoritative handbook on Jesus, his world, the outcomes of his life, and the quests to locate him in history. The Jesus Handbook is an indispensable reference work featuring essays from an international team of renowned scholars on the significance and meaning of the life of Jesus of Nazareth. Rooted in historical-critical methodology, it emphasizes a diversity of perspectives and provides a spectrum of possible interpretations rather than a single unified portrait of Jesus. The Handbook’s dozens of authors—Jewish, Roman Catholic, and Protestant—all remain committed to the principle of interpreting the life of Jesus in context, while also giving due diligence to the implications of archaeological evidence and recent discourses in the hermeneutics of history. After an introduction that lays out the considerations of the task at hand, the authors survey the history of Jesus research and take a close look at the historical material itself—textual and otherwise. From this foundation, the Handbook then details the life of Jesus before at last exploring the reception and effects of Jesus’s life after his death, especially in the first centuries CE. With this wealth of information available in a single volume, scholars and students of the New Testament and early Christianity—and anyone interested in the search for the historical Jesus—will find The Jesus Handbook to be a resource that they return to time and again for both its breadth and depth.
