Book excerpt: The late Renaissance sculptor Leone Leoni (1509-1590) came from modest beginnings, but died as a nobleman and knight. His remarkable leap in status from his humble birth to a stonemason's family, to his time as a galley slave, to living as a nobleman and courtier in Milan provide a specific case study of an artist's struggle and triumph over existing social structures that marginalized the Renaissance artist. Based on a wealth of discoveries in archival documents, correspondence, and contemporary literature, the author examines the strategies Leoni employed to achieve his high social position, such as the friendships he formed, the type of education he sought out, the artistic imagery he employed, and the aristocratic trappings he donned. Leoni's multiple roles (imperial sculptor, aristocrat, man of erudition, and criminal), the visual manifestations of these roles in his house, collection, and tomb, the form and meaning of the artistic commissions he undertook, and the particular successes he enjoyed are here situated within the complex political, social and economic contexts of northern Italy and the Spanish court in the sixteenth century.

Myth and misinformation abounded. The Society of Jesus, the Jesuits' official name, was a society of saints or of devils incarnate. Not until the mid-twentieth century did historians begin to dispel some of the myths, but only with John O'Malley's The First Jesuits (1993) did a new era open in the study of the Society. Since then the Jesuits have attracted great attention from scholars of all disciplines on an international basis. O'Malley has continued to write about Saint Ignatius and the subsequent history of the Jesuits. The list of emerging infections continues to grow with a diverse set of pathogens against which we have inadequate counter measures. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is perhaps the EID that defines our times, taking well over a decade before rates of new infection could be curbed following identification of the etiologic agent in 1983. Deep study of most EID reveals the intricate complexity and connectedness of humans, animals, pathogens, vectors, and environ. Ongoing outbreaks of Ebola and Lassa fever emphasize how population expansion may create niches and opportunity for infectious disease emergence. Globalization can bring people and pathogen together as rapid as ever in various ways. Factors such as unplanned urbanization, global warming, social disparities, and other ecologic conditions also add fuel to the fire for what may be the next EID – a coronavirus, avian influenza, or a yet unknown viral agent. Though smallpox and polio give rare examples of highly successful public health efforts to overcome the challenges of infectious diseases, the translation and implementation of scientific research and discovery remains critical.
