The present bilingual edition prepared by Dr Bruno Dagens contains critically edited Sanskrit text which is an improvement over the earlier edition by the same scholar and published as No.40 of Publications de L'Institut Francaisd' Indologie, Pondicherry. The English translation, also published earlier, has now been revised with copious notes. The usefulness of the edition has been further enhanced by adding an analytical table of contents and a comprehensive glossary. In the series of Kalamulasastra early texts on music, namely, Matralaksanam, Dattilam and Brhaddest, have been published. The medieval texts on music, especially, the Sribastamuktavali (No.3 in the series) and the Nartananirnaya (No.17 in the series), bring us up to the 15th and 16th centuries. In the case of architecture, despite the IGNCA's endeavour to publish portions of the Brhatsamhita, the Agni Purana and the Visnudharmottara-Purana, first, this has not been possible. Instead, our scholars were able to complete work first on a late but important text, namely, Silparatnakosa. We hope that the sections on architecture in the Brhatsamhita, the Agni Purana and the Visnudharmottara-Purana which predate the medieval texts, will be published soon, along with revised and re-edited texts of Manasollasa and Aparajitaprccha. The Mayamatam is the fourteenth and fifteenth volume in the Kalamulasastra series of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA).

The meaning of Shastra is a book which deals with the mysterious and systematic explanation of a subject, therefore the meaning of Vastushastra is a book related to the residence. The origin and anatomy of Vastushastra is based on the principle of the five elements of creation. As our body is also made up of these five elements, if enough attention is paid to the incorporation of these five elements in the construction of a house then the people residing in the building shall reside happily. These five elements are- Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space. Our universe also is made up of these five elements only. Therefore the saying goes – (Yatpindetatbramhande). God ( bhagwan) has given these five gifts to us– from (bha) bhumi (land), from (ga) gagan (sky, ether), from (va) vayuq (air), from (na) neer (water). God is represented by the symbol (Om). These five elements are present in this Om also. “Aa” is Agni (fire), “Au” is Jal (water), “Ma” is Vayu (air), “ W ” (ardhachandra) is Bhoomi (land) and “0” is Akash (ether, sky). Similarly the word Vastu also denotes these five elements. From “Va” Vayu (air), from “Aa” Agni (fire), from “Sa” “Srishti” Bhoomi (land), from “Ta” Tat means Akash (ether/ sky) and from “Au” Jal (water). These five elements also are represented by the five planets. 1. Earth is represented by Mars 2. Water is represented by Venus 3. Fire is represented by Sun 4. Air is represented by Saturn 5. Ether is represented by Jupiter. Similarly mind is controlled by Moon. Intelligence is controlled by Mercury. Ego and arrogance is controlled by Rahu and moksha or spirituality by Ketu. Disbalance of these elements in the body produces ill health and disease. In a similar manner the disbalance of these elements in a house creates varied kind of troubles for the persons living in it. There are unlimited forces present in nature. Some of these forces influence us, for example the gravitational force of earth, the magnetic and electrical energy of the universe and the electromagnetic force present everywhere. These energies also exist in the constructed house and they continue influencing the electromagnetic force present in the human body. This produces the auspicious or inauspicious results. These results vary from place to place depending on the geographical location. For these reasons the results of vastu principles are not the same all over the world. They differ according to the longitude and latitude of the place. They also differ according to the horoscope of the person concerned. If man goes along with the flow of nature's energies, it produces good health, progress and prosperity. If he goes against the flow of nature, he faces hurdles and obstructions everywhere. Hence it is utmost important and necessary for us to organize our lives according to nature, only then we can live happily. Halayudha kosha says that, Vastu is that art of house construction, which starts from Ishan kona etc and which protects the residents of the house from natural calamities and obstructions.

The soul transfuses with mind, wisdom and egotism in the body after it is formed with the combination of the said five elements. All the five elements are represented by five planets in the following manner: Earth is represented by Mars, water by Venus, fire by Sun, air by Saturn and ether is represented by Jupiter. Mind is governed by Moon, wisdom by Mercury and egotism by Rahu. Ketu is the Karak of Moksha, the salvation. Any irregularity in the balance of these elements makes the members of the family suffer. Very often it is asked as to why the Vastu Shastra has got momentum only recently Can the Vastu faults be overcome by remedies? In this regard author says that the agonies of the man have been aggravating since he has started dwelling in multistoreyed flats as they are built like boxes where Brahmasthan is not kept open. The sun and air are not allowed in the house. Some people keep their windows close to protect themselves whereas some do it to save their household goods from dirt. Earlier a courtyard kept open in the middle of the houses so that sun, air and celestial elements might reach the rooms. There is nothing wrong if a man seeks advice from Vastu consultant to ward off the faults existing in house like an ailing person sees a doctor to have his advice. A Vastu consultant advises renovation of a building only when it is essential and there is no way out. He is like a good doctor who advises a patient to go for a surgery when the disease with which the latter is suffering from cannot be cured by medicines or by any other means. Vastu faults can also be removed without any renovation - by changing the place of the goods in the house and by selecting right direction for meal and slumber. They can be removed by worship of gods and deities. Fengshui, Pyramid, Yantra - Mantra can also be chosen as helping hands in attaining happiness and prosperity. In this book apart from a brief description of Vastu, different methods of remedies have been incorporated.
