Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With contributions from some of the world's leading experts, the second edition of this classic reference compiles all major techniques of flow visualization and demonstrates their applications in all fields of science and technology. A new chapter has been added that covers flow visualization applications in large wide tunnels for airplane and automobile testing. Several important examples of applications are included. A second new chapter details the use of infrared (IR) cameras for detecting and observing the boundary layer transition in industrial wind tunnels and flight testing of commercial transport airplanes. A final new chapter has been added on multiphase flow and pulsed-light velocimetry.

Book Natural Convection Characteristics of Flat Plate Collectors Progress Report

Download or read book Natural Convection Characteristics of Flat Plate Collectors Progress Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of an experimental investigation into the convective heat losses in large aspect ratio flat-plate solar collectors are described. An experimental study has been undertaken on a specially designed test cell using a 3 inch Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Air at atmospheric pressure was used as the heat-transfer fluid. The experimental results include interferograms which show the thermal boundary layer formations and the temperature profiles. Local temperature profiles have been analyzed through the use of an optical comparator to determine local Nusselt number profiles, which have, in turn, been integrated to give average heat-transfer results. Angles of inclination from the horizontal of 45, 60, 75 and 90 degrees have been investigated. Aspect ratios from 9 to 36 were examined over a Rayleigh number range of 4,000 to 310,000. Finally, heat-transfer correlations have been developed for the prediction of local Nusselt numbers in the starting and departure corners and for the average heat-transfer results as a function of collector tilt angle.

Book Interferometric Study of the Natural Convection Characteristics of Flat Plate Slat and Vee corrugated Solar Collectors Final Report

Download or read book Interferometric Study of the Natural Convection Characteristics of Flat Plate Slat and Vee corrugated Solar Collectors Final Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The natural convection heat transfer relations for the heat transfer between absorber and cover plates of solar collectors have been studied. Interferometric techniques were employed to evaluate the local coefficients. Average values were obtained by integration of the local values. The results are presented in terms of correlations between Nusselt number and Grashof number. The investigations were carried out over tilt angles of 45 to 90 degrees. The Grashof number range tested was representative of that existing in flat plate collectors. The various geometrics included large flat enclosures, small aspect ratio enclosures representative of honeycomb or slat collectors, vee-corrugated (vee-grooved) collectors, and compound parabolic concentrators.

Book Methods for Reducing Heat Losses from Flat Plate Solar Collectors

Download or read book Methods for Reducing Heat Losses from Flat Plate Solar Collectors written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improvements to flat plate solar collectors for heating and cooling of buildings were investigated through two parallel studies. The first study, which deals with the free convective heat loss from V-corrugated absorber plate to a plane glass cover, has shown that, for the same average spacing, the free convective heat loss is greater for a V-corrugated absorber plate than for a plane absorber plate. However, provided the average spacing is large enough, the amount of increase is slight. The second study, which deals with the free convective heat loss in a honeycomb solar collector in which the honeycomb consists of a set of horizontal partitions, or slits, has shown that provided the solar collector is tilted to near vertical, such a honeycomb gives equivalent or superior free convective loss suppression than does a square-celled honeycomb having the same amount of material. Correlation equations for the free convective heat loss are given for both studies.

Book Studies on Methods of Reducing Heat Losses from Flat Plate Solar Collectors

Download or read book Studies on Methods of Reducing Heat Losses from Flat Plate Solar Collectors written by K. G. T. Hollands and published by University of Waterloo Research Institute. This book was released on 1976 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improvements to flat plate solar collectors for heating and cooling of buildings have been evaluated through three parallel studies. The first study has demonstrated suppression of free convection by a honeycomb at all angles of inclination. Reductions by a factor of 5 in the free convective heat loss are reported, and equations and charts permitting the rational design of honeycombs for convection suppression in solar collectors are presented. The second study has resulted in a precise, easily programmable set of equations for the free convective heat loss through the air gaps in flat plate solar collectors, for any angle of tilt. The third study has theoretically and experimentally demonstrated that the solar transmittance of a flat transparent cover for a solar collector can be very substantially increased by V-corrugating. Since V-corrugating should also decrease the free convective and radiant losses, substantial improvements in collector efficiency are predicted.
