Book Visual Geography of California Classic Reprint

Download or read book Visual Geography of California Classic Reprint written by Herbert Edward Floercky and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-04 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Visual Geography of California Many hardy adventurers have come to California in their search for new lands, and the romantic story of their travels and hardships are mat ters that every dweller in this state will find of interest. The early dis coverers came by way of the sea, but after the discovery of gold all manner ner of men came overland. California's rich underground lakes of oil and the great numbers of persons who were attracted by the lure of acquiring fortunes in the oil fields have added another epoch to the history of this far western state. 'the 'climate, too, has been a source of attraction for people from colder parts of the world. This book attempts to tell some of the most important facts about California and the bearing these have had on the development of the state. Pictures, maps, charts, and graphs have been freely used in an effort to concentrate much information in a small space. Two types of graphs or charts are used. If the similarity between the circular graphs and a pie is pointed out to the children they will readily grasp the relationship between the slices and the whole and thus between the objects of com parison. Download or read book The Geography of California Classic Reprint written by Harold Wellman Fairbanks and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geography of California The geography of California is a vast and many sided subject which has never yet been adequately treated. It is not the inten tion of the author in presenting this little hand-book to take up the subject in an exhaustive manner, for that would require a large volume. Nor is his intention to present a mere description of the various aspects of the geography of the State, for this has already been done, although in an inadequate manner, in various little school supplements and advertising pamphlets. Moreover, mere description cannot impart real geographic knowledge, since we must know something of causes and relations. The object which the author has in mind is rather to give a simple and yet detailed description of the conditions under which we are living, and weave them into a connected and rational whole, so that teachers and pupils may acquire the elements of a rational knowledge of California. As our work in geography is at present outlined it is ridiculously unphilosophical as well as thoroughly inadequate. The geography of California is extraordinarily varied and interesting. Children should not leave school without some elementary conceptions of the origin and meaning of the physical features about them, of the strongly contrasted climatic condi tions, and of the influence which these exert upon our lives. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from California of the South: Its Physical Geography, Climate, Resources, Routes of Travel, and Health-Resorts, Being a Complete Guide-Book to Southern California In the mountain-chains, also, a similarity and again a difference may be noted. Upon each coast in the southern portion a system of mountain-chains follows the shore-line at a greater or less distance inland. Upon the Atlantic side this system, the Appalachian, begins in Northern Georgia, and extends continuously through the Carolinas, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, finally disappearing in Northern Maine. It runs parallel to the coast, and at a distance of from two to three hundred miles inland. South of this line the land ceases, and the great heated body of the Gulf waters ex tends across the southern border of the continent, sending its modifying influence, borne by the Gulf winds, far inland along the open valley-way of the Mississippi. North of Central New York the chain begins to break down, leaving the country Open upon the north and west to the cold winds which sweep down from the polar seas, and from the great frozen plains which extend to the mouth of the Mackenzie. The northwesterly winds gather an increased harshness from the winter-chilled waters of the Great Lakes, across which they pass. This Appalachian system is made up of mountains of limited altitude, ranging only from two to three thousand feet in height, and broken by numerous passes and low reaches. Between these mountains and the sea lies a coast-plain, broad, continuous, fertile, watered by many rivers, and broken by no transverse range of mountains. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lower California: Its Geography and Characteristics, With a Sketch of the Grant and Purposes of the Lower California Company Historical Summary of Lower California, by Alexander S. Taylor. See Appendix.to five thousand Indians each, who with their families were employed by the Jesuits in cultivating land or herding stock. They lived in plenty. The climate enabled them to grow not only the most valuable grains, but also sugar, figs, oranges, dates, and other tropical productions; while of cotton, they always raised sufficient to supply their wants in clothes. We search-in vain among the records of these people for accounts of those great drouths which are said to render the country incapable of culture. We find, on the contrary, that the fathers had a System of agriculture which was entirely reliable. They consulted with intelligence the characteristics of the country, and those very features which the impatient and the ignorant have reported as discouraging, were, turned to account and proven to be providential. The missions were usually planted on the hill sides so that they overlooked the valleys, and when the rains fell, contin gent water was secured by a system of enormous dams of stone, which were projected from hill to hill quite across the valleys, so as to back up the water in artificial streams till the next rain fell. These rude works were as creditable to the Jesuits of Lower California as were the aqueducts of Egypt and of Rome to the Pharoahs and the Caesars; and their ruins are to this day a rebuke to the present dero gate condition of the territory. The truth is, that Lower California, instead of being worthless or even undesirable, has simply retrogaded. Nevertheless, with all of its misfortunes, it is not today as desolate as the Roman Campagna, or as worthless as many of the once fertile districts of the Nile. Download or read book Geographical Memoir Upon Upper California Classic Reprint written by John Charles Fremont and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geographical Memoir Upon Upper California Gentlemen, - The letters received by the Clyde, purporting to be written from California, and which represent that country in a state of the utmost anarchy and con fiision, were evidently penned for some sinister or mischievous purpose. These letters state that General Smith had been forced by a mob to take refuge on board a man-of war. The General, when I left Monterey, was living on board the flag ship Ohio; but he was there not to escape popular violence, but simply and solely because he could not, at the time, procure suitable quarters on shore. These letters also state that the life of 001. Mason was in jeopardy, on account of some obnoxious measures which he had adopted, when the truth is, Col. Mason is now in New York. It must be a long arm that can stretch from California to our Atlantic board. There are two classes of persons at San Francisco; the one is the permanent citi zens, the other is the gold-diggers. The citizens have every thing at issue, in repress ing tumult and disorder; and the gold-diggers are on their way to the mines, and are in as much haste as a bridegroom bound to the nuptial altar, or a doctor to his first cholera patient. They have no time and no motive for getting up a mob it cannot supply them with mules or shorten the distance to the mines; and they have no preja dices to gratify, unless a man can hate what he has never seen, and find it in his nature to salute a stranger by knocking him down, and that too with golden visions dancing through his dreams. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Years in California The permanency of first impressions is strikingly shown by the very common impression in regard to California. It was first known to the world as a gold producing country, and men are slow to learn that While gold continues to be a very considerable product it is far exceeded in value and extent by other indus tries. The gold product is now principally obtained by quartz-mining, which requires large capital to con duct it. There is no longer any furor connected with the business, nor are fortunes now made in a day. Mining is conducted as a legitimate business, of which the average yield has been, for the last few years, about twenty millions of dollars per annum. As a bullion producing State, including gold and silver, California has fallen into the second place - it is outranked by Nevada, which, in 1875, produced more than twice as much as the Golden State. But the increase in agri cultural products is more than an offset for the falling off in this direction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
