Book excerpt: In order to assess individual differences in susceptibility to nitrogen narcosis, a group of 16 men made repeated air dives to approximately 200 ft in a pressure chamber. The visual evoked response of the men at depth revealed several decrements: in the response to a slow rate of stimulation, there was a highly significant reduction in a component around 160 msec; in the response to a rapid rate of stimulation, marked losses in amplitude and increases in variability were found. The latter changes were related to diving experience while the former were not. No significant changes were found in alpha or theta activity in the EEG. (Author).

Book excerpt: Visual evoked responses (VERs) and electroencephalograms (EEGs) were recorded during the course of a long-term, shallow, nitrogen/oxygen saturation dive. Measures were made during excursion dives and at the saturation level prior to and following each excursion. Comparison with a control series, in which bounce dives were made from the surface, revealed that some adaptive changes took place in the VER; complete adaptation however did not occur. Reduction in frequency and amplitude of alpha, in the EEG, also was found during the course of the saturation period. (Author).

Book excerpt: EEG and visually evoked cortical responses (VERs) were recorded from rats before, during and after a 35 day exposure to hyperbaric air at a depth of 60 feet. Recordings were obtained from chronically implanted cortical electrodes each week during the course of the dive. Although systematic changes occurred in both the EEG and VER during the experiment, similar changes occurred in a control group which remained at the surface. Thus the hyperbaric saturation exposure produced no significant changes in the EEG or VER. This result implies that long-term exposure to a depth of 60 feet does not impair the general functioning of the nervous system. (Author).

Book excerpt: A technique is described for recording electroencephalograms (EEG) and visually evoked cortical responses (VERs) from rats during hyperbaric exposure. A reliable and durable chronic electrode implantation procedure is used in which miniature, self-tapping stainless steel screws serve a dual role as cortical electrodes and as anchors for a miniature connecting socket. Sample data are presented which were obtained from implanted rats during exposure to hyperbaric air. The techniques developed are well-suited for studying the neurophysiological effects of hyperbaric environments. (Author)
