Book excerpt: This is the final volume of a trilogy of novellas about the discovery of a badly damaged alien artefact in low Earth orbit. Dr Evelyn Slater, its discoverer, managed the construction of a Cluster laboratory near the ISS to hold the device while it was examined by scientists. She returns to Earth and takes charge of the investigation of the data downloaded from the device. Images are found. Secrecy was in danger when an image of an actual alien was downloaded and Evelyn is given the task of preparing the world for the news that we are no longer alone in the universe. A second device is found in orbit around Mars. It is being returned to Earth while irrational hatred of the aliens was growing. A message comes from MARS ONE to say that the alien device has come to life in the hold of the ship and Evelyn is to head a team to meet the alien when it arrives at the Cluster. What will it have to say? What was the purpose of its mission? Can it be kept safe from the xenophobes?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume in a trilogy dealing with the discovery of an alien artefact which has been found in low earth orbit by Dr. Evelyn Slater and Yuri Bulgakov using the scaffy wagon. Secrecy had immediately descended upon the project. Only a few select individuals knew the true nature of what had been found. Evelyn and Yuri's mission changed from debris collection to building the Cluster laboratory to study the alien device. Now back on Earth, Evelyn, who is also an astronomer and psychologist, becomes director of the Goonhilly Earth Station with responsibility for unravelling the artefact's secrets. Evelyn's team of hackers and linquists throw themselves into a study of the mass of data being downloaded from the alien artefact's memory banks, finding first images then language. She briefs the British Cabinet but secrecy is maintained until it becomes impossible to hide the discovery from the population of the world any longer. Wonderful story telling - you will not put this book down.

Book excerpt: From where had it come? The first ever space junk elimination mission encounters a badly damaged object not manufactured on planet earth. Who could have made it? What was its purpose? The mission changes. Secrecy is suddenly imposed. Is this the first alien object found or are the rumours about previous encounters true after all? The chance of our civilisation making contact with another is unimaginably tiny. If we sent a message to a neighbour today it could take years to arrive. Would the neighbour be home to receive it? Their civilisation may not begin for millions of years or might have died a billion years previously. For us to make contact, not only does the neighbour have to be intelligent and technologically advanced, already a remote possibility, but they also need to have a civilisation at the same time as us. The window of opportunity is tiny. This story tells of just one such attempted communication.

Book excerpt: THE VISITOR - hard, near-future science fiction for the reader who likes realism. Author's note: A minority of reviewers keep attacking me as an author owing to this book having some political correctness, some socialist arguments and an atheist character. All of these attributes are necessary to the story. Science fiction readers are supposed to embrace 'different' points of view and scenarios. I don't always support the views of my characters any more than Orwell did when he wrote 1984. Please bear that in mind or read the reviews before buying. Specialist astronaut Evelyn Slater encounters a small, badly damaged, ancient, alien artefact (British spelling) on the first ever space-junk elimination mission. Where was it from? Who sent it? International governments impose a security clampdown. Evelyn leads a team of hand-picked scientists who make amazing discoveries within the alien device. Secrecy becomes impossible to maintain. When the news is finally released, she becomes embroiled in international politics, worldwide xenophobic hatred and violence. This is book one of Tony Harmsworth’s First Contact series of novels. If you like realistic near-future stories which compel you to imagine yourself as the protagonist, The Visitor is the book for you. The Visitor – science fiction written for the 'thinking' reader, and with a wicked twist. Buy it now and be transported into orbit. Recent review "This is unquestionably the finest first contact novel I have ever read. "All of the activity that takes place in outer space is realistic, well-informed yet easygoing. It is a completely plausible milieu and this adds considerably to the gravitas and integrity of the plot and its theme. "The whole first contact scenario is depicted in a fresh, innovative way. By this I mean the technological side of the process of discovery and analysis of the object; and also the nature, integrity and motivations of several pivotal characters. The behaviour of other characters, of course, is sadly predictable, because this cannot be changed in any story one expects people to actually believe. "The way that conflict plays out is enormously satisfying to me. "I recommend this book very highly."

Download or read book Memory Eternal written by Sergei Kan and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Memory Eternal, Sergei Kan combines anthropology and history, anecdote and theory to portray the encounter between the Tlingit Indians and the Russian Orthodox Church in Alaska in the late 1700s and to analyze the indigenous Orthodoxy that developed over the next 200 years. As a native speaker of Russian with eighteen years of fieldwork experience among the Tlingit, Kan is uniquely qualified to relate little-known material from the archives of the Russian church in Alaska to Tlingit oral history and his own observations. By weighing the one body of evidence against the other, he has reevaluated this history, arriving at a persuasive new concept of “converged agendas”—the view that the Tlingit and the Russians tended to act in mutually beneficial ways but for entirely different reasons throughout the period of their contact with one another. The Russian-American Company began operations in southeastern Alaska in the 1790s. Against a description of Tlingit culture at the time of the Russians’ arrival, Kan examines Russian Orthodox theology, ritual practice, and missionary methods, and the Tlingit response to them. An uneasy symbiosis characterized the early era of the Russian-American Company, when the trading relationship outweighed any spiritual or social rapprochement. A second, major focus of Kan’s study is the Tlingit experience with American colonial domination. He attributes a sudden revival of Tlingit interest in Orthodoxy in the 1880s as their attempt to maintain independence in the face of concerted efforts by the newcomers (and especially Presbyterian missionaries) to Americanize them. Memory Eternal shows the colonial encounter to be both a power struggle and a dialogue between different systems of meaning. It portrays Native Alaskans not as helpless victims but as historical agents who attempted to adjust to the changing reality of their social world without abandoning fundamental principles of their precolonial sociocultural order or their strong sense of self-respect.
