Book excerpt: In the first meeting of the Relief Society, Sister Emma Smith said, “We are going to do something extraordinary.” She was right. The history of Relief Society is filled with examples of ordinary women who have accomplished extraordinary things as they have exercised faith in Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. Relief Society was established to help prepare daughters of God for the blessings of eternal life. The purposes of Relief Society are to increase faith and personal righteousness, strengthen families and homes, and provide relief by seeking out and helping those in need. Women fulfill these purposes as they seek, receive, and act on personal revelation in their callings and in their personal lives. This book is not a chronological history, nor is it an attempt to provide a comprehensive view of all that the Relief Society has accomplished. Instead, it provides a historical view of the grand scope of the work of the Relief Society. Through historical accounts, personal experiences, scriptures, and words of latter-day prophets and Relief Society leaders, this book teaches about the responsibilities and opportunities Latter-day Saint women are given in Heavenly Father’s plan of happiness.

Download or read book Beyond the Skills Gap written by Matthew T. Hora and published by Harvard Education Press. This book was released on 2019-01-02 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can educators ensure that young people who attain a postsecondary credential are adequately prepared for the future? Matthew T. Hora and his colleagues explain that the answer is not simply that students need more specialized technical training to meet narrowly defined employment opportunities. Beyond the Skills Gap challenges this conception of the “skills gap,” highlighting instead the value of broader twenty-first-century skills in postsecondary education. They advocate for a system in which employers share responsibility along with the education sector to serve the collective needs of the economy, society, and students. Drawing on interviews with educators in two- and four-year institutions and employers in the manufacturing and biotechnology sectors, the authors demonstrate the critical importance of habits of mind such as problem solving, teamwork, and communication. They go on to show how faculty and program administrators can create active learning experiences that develop students’ skills across a range of domains. The book includes in-depth descriptions of eight educators whose classrooms exemplify the effort to blend technical learning with the cultivation of twenty-first-century habits of mind. The study, set in Wisconsin, takes place against the backdrop of heated political debates over the role of public higher education. This thoughtful and nuanced account, enriched by keen observations of postsecondary instructional practice, promises to contribute new insights to the rich literature on workforce development and to provide valuable guidance for postsecondary faculty and administrators.

Book The Visiting Teacher in the United States

Download or read book The Visiting Teacher in the United States written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Visiting Teacher in the United States: A Survey by the National Association of Visiting Teachers and Home and School Visitors This Report On Visiting Teachers in the United States by the National Association of Visiting Teachers and Home and School Visitors should be of great interest to educators and laymen everywhere who are seeking to enable the schools to meet the needs of individual children. The Public Education Association takes peculiar pleasure in publishing this report because it has for years maintained a staff of several visiting teachers, who have co-operated with the principals and teachers in the New York City public schools in solving such problems. The report is a splendid sequel to "The Visiting Teacher in New York City" by Harriet M. Johnson, formerly of the Association's staff, published by the Association in 1916. It not only furnishes a vivid picture of what visiting teachers everywhere are doing but gives the unmistakable impression that the work is no longer an unproven experiment but an integral part of a progressive program of public education. As the first report of the National Association, it is to be highly commended and regarded as an initial publication that gives promise of future valuable contributions to the literature of this important subject. Aside from the clarity with which the technique of the work is analyzed and described, there is one aspect of the report which is of especial interest to the Public Education Association. We note that usually this work has been initiated and fostered by the co-operative efforts of public spirited citizens and school officials. It is thus but another of many instances that might be cited from the history of public education in this country to illustrate how organized citizen effort can further child welfare in co-operation with the schools.
