Book excerpt: Texts expressing concerns and priorities of the church during the reign of Charles I. `Sets a standard of excellence which will gain the society a high reputation... Documents which have for much too long been inaccessible to ecclesiastical and social historians, and which they cannot afford to ignore.' JOURNAL OFECCLESIASTICAL HISTORY `An important sourcebook for research about early seventeenth-century religious and social history.' TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT [Following on from the highly-praised first volume of visitation articles, covering the years 1603-25] This selection of articles and injunctions issued by archbishops, bishops, archdeacons, and other ecclesiastical ordinaries in the early Stuart church concentrates on the church of Charles I, from his accession in 1625 to the outbreak of the Civil War in 1642. The volume traces the impact of Laudian reforms as well as the defensive reaction of the Church hierarchy in 1641-2. The range of churchmanship included is broad, stretchingfrom the articles and injunctions of Laudian enthusiasts such as bishops Wren and Montagu to those issued by Calvinist episcopalians such as Hall and Thornborough. The introduction places these texts in their historical and historiographical contexts, and an appendix lists all surviving sets of visitation articles for the years 1603-1642. The volume will be a valuable work of reference for anyone interested in the government and ideals of the early Stuartchurch. Dr KENNETH FINCHAMis Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Kent at Canterbury.

Download or read book Evaluation of Effects of Implementing Day use Fees at Corps of Engineers Recreation Areas written by David E. Calkin and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1994, the Corps of Engineers began implementing a day-use fee program (swimming beaches and boat ramps) at previously free Corps of Engineers recreation areas. Historically, there were concerns on the effects of fees on the visitor use, e.g., reduce number of Corps visits or displacement to other recreation sites and opposition to fees by the public. Potential changes in recreation behavior if fees were implemented and attitudes about fees were determined in a 1993 survey prior to the charging of fees; the 1993 survey findings were compared with the 1996 survey to determine the effects of fees. In 1996, surveys were conducted at J. Percy Priest Lake, Nashville, Th, and Harry S. Truman Lake, Warsaw, MO. Visitors at both lakes expressed strong opposition to fees in 1993. Charging fees did not cause visitors to stop using Corps reservoirs; visitation increased at the two lakes and nationwide. Opposition to fees had changed at Priest to strong support (mean of 7.71 out of 10 (strong support). At Traman, equal numbers of visitors strongly supported and strongly opposed the fee program. A factor analysis identified project characteristics, e.g., facility cleanliness, that contribute to visitors' support of the fee program and that can be controlled by project management.
