Book Tallahassee FL Travel Guide The Capital of Florida A Journey Through USA eBook

Download or read book Tallahassee FL Travel Guide The Capital of Florida A Journey Through USA eBook written by Baktash Vafaei and published by StateGuides. This book was released on with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tallahassee is the capital of the U.S. state of Florida and is located in the north of the state, near the border with Georgia. The city has a population of about 200,000 people and is known for its rich history, beautiful parks, and vibrant arts scene. Tallahassee has a long and interesting history dating back to pre-Columbian times when it was settled by various Native American tribes. The city was founded in 1824 and quickly became an important commercial center in Florida. During the American Civil War, Tallahassee was an important supply point for the Confederate Army and was besieged twice by Union troops, but was successfully defended. In the decades following the Civil War, Tallahassee experienced growth, especially after Florida was named the railroad capital of the South in 1905. The city also became an important educational location when Florida State University and Florida A&M University were founded. During the civil rights movement of the 1950s and '60s, Tallahassee played an important role, as it was one of the first cities in Florida to end racial segregation in public institutions. Today, Tallahassee is a thriving city with a rich history that is honored in various museums and monuments throughout the area. Visitors can visit the Museum of Florida History to learn about the state's history, or visit the Tallahassee Historic District to see restored 19th-century buildings. Tallahassee also hosts regular events and festivals, including the Tallahassee Film Festival, Springtime Tallahassee Festival, and the Southern Shakespeare Festival.

Book excerpt: “Hope you are having as nice weather as we are. It and the people are grand.” Tourists enjoying their Florida vacation might have written that message. Perhaps an elected official at the state capitol during a legislative session penned the sentiment. Maybe a student attending one of Tallahassee's several colleges intended to reassure anxious parents back home. Written on a postcard from Tallahassee in 1908, the words, whatever their purpose, still hold true.

Book Saving the Union My Days with Lincoln and Stanton Annotated

Download or read book Saving the Union My Days with Lincoln and Stanton Annotated written by Bvt. Major-General Edward D. Townsend and published by BIG BYTE BOOKS. This book was released on with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No military man met more often with Abraham Lincoln and Edwin Stanton than Major-General Edward Davis Townsend. A West Point graduate and an adjutant in Washington, D.C. during the American Civil War, his anecdotes and stories about events and people are some of the most fascinating observations of anyone who was there. He personally read the dispatch to General Scott relating the fall of Fort Sumter. His remarks on Scott's loyalty and the death of Edwin Stanton are not found elsewhere. His contribution is a wonderful addition to the corpus of Civil War literature. Front-line letters and diaries of the Civil War bring an immediacy to a long-ago event and connect us to these everyday men and women who lived it. For less than you'd spend on gas going to the library, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Book The New Democrats and the Return to Power

Download or read book The New Democrats and the Return to Power written by Al From and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2013-12-03 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After Barack Obama's solid win in the 2012 election, it's easy to forget that there was a time, not long ago, when the Democrats were shut out of power for over a decade. But Al From remembers. In 1984, he led a small band of governors, US senators, and members of Congress to organize the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC). Their mission: to rescue the party from the political wilderness, redefine its message, and, most importantly, win presidential elections. In April 1989, From traveled to Little Rock, Arkansas, to recruit the state's young governor, Bill Clinton, to be chairman of the DLC. Here, Al From explores the founding philosophy of the New Democrats, which not only achieved stunning validation during Clinton's two terms, but also became the model for resurgent center-left parties in Europe and throughout the democratic world. Here, he outlines for the first time the principles at the heart of the movement, including economic centrism, national security, and entitlement reform, and why they are vital to the success of the Democratic Party in the years ahead.
