The author was a full-time trade union official most of his working life (he is now retired) and was also involved politically on the left, so is able to write with some experience and knowledge on the subject.The book opens with an attempt to describe capitalism as it is now, then deals with the basic ideas of socialism. It then takes the reader more deeply into the politics and economics of socialism from a Marxist standpoint. The remaining chapters deal with various social problems of today, including the growing gap between rich and poor and between rich and poor nations, feminism, racism, democracy, freedom and liberty under socialism, etc. It considers the road to socialism in the light of past attempts to set up socialist regimes, e.g. the Paris Commune of 1870-71 and the Russian Revolution from 1917 to the collapse of the Soviet system in 1989-91.It has a chapter on the history of the idea of socialism-communism in Britain and Europe. It also deals with the present and the future of the several new Latin American left-wing regimes and concludes with a discussion of the situation in Britain today in the light of the 'New' Labour government's swing to the right. It arrives at a conclusion that the future of socialism in Britain - if it has a future at all - lies with ordinary people and their battle for political and economic democracy, peace, liberty and justice.

Christian socialists put their faith in a future Kingdom of God on earth that honored the ideas of Karl Marx. Radical newspaper editors in Kansas, Missouri, and Texas attempted to lay out the imagined transition to socialism to their readers in simple, straightforward language that made the goal seem readily obtainable. Mormons, disappointed in the changing nature of their faith, pondered a possible socialist future. Others, such as William English Walling, worked for a time ahead that was both socialist and colorblind. Challenging the notion that they had no concrete vision, this book of essays examines the many ways in which early 20th century American socialists imagined their future.

Book excerpt: After the Manifesto of the Communist Party was published in 1848, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels were the superstars of European socialism. They were not the only socialist theorists, but their legacy, especially that of Marx, looms large in the modern socialist imaginary. Other Marxist theorists have contributed a great deal to socialist theory. These theorists include August Bebel, Karl Liebknecht, and Wilhelm Liebknecht. Each of these men contributed mostly to the German socialist movement, but their work spanned the continent. However, their writings, especially those of Karl Marx, present a starting place for other theorists and activists. Their texts, and lives, cannot exist separate and distinct from the context in which they lived and worked. In this context are other activists and theorists who get left behind in modern records and scholarship on this period. In the transition from "great man" history to social history, many voices continue to be erased. These voices tend to be those of intellectual women. In this case, socialist feminists working during the same time as the men previously mentioned. I argue three of the most influential Marxists during this time are also some of the most overlooked: Eleanor Marx; Clara Zetkin; and Alexandra Kollontai. Their work with proletarian women within the Marxist framework is missing from modern socialist feminist theories. This lacuna is predominantly a function of the erasure of revolutionary potential from Western Marxism and an assumption that the goals of the past and the present are completely separate.

She reveals how Jones’ radicalism was forged as a youth confronting American racism, and how her disillusionment led to a life committed to advocating for socialist liberation. But this activism came at a cost: Jones would be expelled from the US for being a communist. Deported to England, she took up the mantle of anti-colonial liberation movements, soon becoming a fixture in London’s West Indian community. Despite the innumerable obstacles in her way, Jones never wavered in her commitments.
