Book Discourses of Vision in Nineteenth Century Britain

Download or read book Discourses of Vision in Nineteenth Century Britain written by Jonathan Potter and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-22 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an innovative reassessment of the way Victorians thought and wrote about visual experience. It argues that new visual technologies gave expression to new ways of seeing, using these to uncover the visual discourses that facilitated, informed and shaped the way people conceptualised and articulated visual experience. In doing so, the book reconsiders literary and non-fiction works by well-known authors including George Eliot, Charles Dickens, G.H. Lewes, Max Nordau, Herbert Spencer, and Joseph Conrad, as well as shedding light on less-known works drawn from the periodical press. By revealing the discourses that formed around visual technologies, the book challenges and builds upon existing scholarship to provide a powerful new model by which to understand how the Victorians experienced, conceptualised, and wrote about vision.

Book excerpt: Does Christian hope have any relation to the specific hopes of humanity? What is the role of the Christian community in the movement of human history? What is the relation between the human, historical activity of building the world, which is the concern of human hope, and the divinely given gift of the Kingdom of God, which is the object of Christian hope? Through these developments, the primary thrust of eschatology has shifted from a concentration of the structures of the world beyond to a theological reflection on the nature of Christian hope itself. Its biblical motto might be drawn from the First Letter of Peter: "Always be prepared to make a defense to anyone who calls you to account for the hope that is in you...." (1 Peter 3:15). What is the ground and object of Christian hope? How can we give an account of Christian hope in the context of the secular hopes of the modern world? What is the Christian vision of hope for the individual, for the human race, and for the world of God's creation?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Saint Paul's Vision: And Other Sermons Although an advocate in theory of the separation of Church and State, M. Bersier in 1877 reunited his church to the consistory of the Established Reformed Church of Paris. He expressed his views on this subject in his discourses on The Church published in that year. He thinks that the Reformed Church of France in spite of the rationalistic elements which it contains through fault of its organization, is still the church which has the greatest chance of exercising a serious influence upon the nation; that from its historic past, from the fact that the Protes tant population is deeply attached to it, it can have a great future, and it is not well to enfeeble it by premature secessions, which in depriving it of its best elements will deliver it over to the representatives of free thinking. It was under the influence of these considerations that other pastors, until that time attached to the Free Church. Book Utterly Other Discourse

Download or read book Utterly Other Discourse written by Ellen G. Friedman and published by Dalkey Archive Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British novelist and critic Christine Brooke-Rose (born 1923) is increasingly being regarded as one of the most significant writers of the contemporary period. In her dozen novels she has explored themes as diverse as biligualism (as a metaphor for alienation) and the influence of computer technology on the humanities. As these themes suggest, Brooke-Rose is sometimes perceived as a difficult writer, especially given the dazzling virtuosity of the linguistic wordplay that enlivens her later novels. "Utterly Other Discourse" (a phrase from her 1984 novel "Amalgamemnon") provides a valuable introduction to her work; in fifteen essays--some previously published, some written for this book--scholars from America, England, and Europe examine her work from a variety of critical angles.

Book excerpt: A dozen essays from a July 1994 conference at the University of San Marino argue that a total shift to electronic information media would trigger wrenching social and cultural dislocations. Among their perspectives are the pragmatics of the new, farewell to the information age, toward meta-reading, hypertext and authorship, and the body of the text. They avoid the usual fetish arguments such as curling up in bed or leather bindings and pipes. Novelist Umberto Eco provides an afterward. No index or word search. Book Apocalyptic Discourse in Contemporary Culture

Download or read book Apocalyptic Discourse in Contemporary Culture written by Monica Germana and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary collection of essays focuses on critical and theoretical responses to the apocalypse of the late twentieth- and early twenty-first-century cultural production. Examining the ways in which apocalyptic discourses have had an impact on how we read the world’s globalised space, the traumatic burden of history, and the mutual relationship between language and eschatological belief, fifteen original essays by a group of internationally established and emerging critics reflect on the apocalypse, its past tradition, pervasive present and future legacy. The collection seeks to offer a new reading of the apocalypse, understood as a complex – and, frequently, paradoxical – paradigm of (contemporary) Western culture. The majority of published collections on the subject have been published prior to the year 2000 and, in their majority of cases, locate the apocalypse in the future and envision it as something imminent. This collection offers a post-millennial perspective that perceives "the end" as immanent and, simultaneously, rooted in the past tradition.
