Book The Influence of Dante on Medieval English Dream Visions

Download or read book The Influence of Dante on Medieval English Dream Visions written by Roberta L. Payne and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1989 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book begins with a discussion of the influence of the Divina Commedia on Pearl, in terms of religious experiences and poetics. Like Pearl, The House of Fame borrows both these thematic levels from the Italian. The Parliament of Fowls illustrates even more sophisticated borrowing techniques. Here Chaucer relies for massive thematic borrowings on really only one specific topos - the inscription on the gate of hell in Dante's Inferno. It is likely Chaucer is borrowing Dante's dream of Beatrice and the God of Love from the opening of the Vita Nuova for use in both the structure and the visual images of Criseyde's Dream of the Eagle in Book Three of Troilus and Criseyde. A brief study of John Lydgate's Temple of Glass and James I's Kingis Quair completes the study.

Book Dante and English Poetry

Download or read book Dante and English Poetry written by Steve Ellis and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1983 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a history of the influence of Dante on English poetry. The focus us not primarily upon stylistic influences or attempts to imitate Dante's manner of writing, but rather on the different guises in which the enormous presence of Dante has made itself felt, and how that presence has affected some of the central concerns of the poets in question. The poets considered are Shelley, Byron, Browning, Rossetti, Yeats, Pound and Eliot. In addition to analysing the way Dante is approached by these poets in their major poetry, Dr Ellis also discusses relevant critical works: Shelley's Defence of Poetry, Pound's The Spirit of Romance and Yeats' A Vision. The critical survey is unified by the attempt to show certain recurrent preoccupations in the work of these writers, such as the need to define a tradition in which Dante is a necessary forerunner. Ellis also shows that Dante has been read in a very partial way by these poets and the images of him which emerge in their works are inevitably varied and contradictory.

The allegory describes Dante's journey through the depths of Hell. He is led by the Roman poet Virgil down into the nine circles of Hell, each of which holds and punishes progressively worse sinners. From the First Circle, where unbaptized souls live in peaceful limbo, down to the Ninth Circle, where Satan is trapped in ice, Dante sees firsthand the consequence of unrepentantly sinning against God. Dante published his narrative poem between 1308 and 1321. This version is taken from an 1892 English edition, featuring British author Rev. H. F. Cary's blank verse translation and woodcut illustrations by French artist Gustave Doré.
